EP 17 Robinson R-22 R-44 Pilot First Flight Cabri G2
Our HOGS Member Private Pilot Charlie Keyes visited me in the HOGS Studio.
Charlie is a World Record Holder of "The Worlds Biggest Loop"
Charlie broke a world record that had been held for 99 years. He broke that record in 2006, then broke his record again in 2007, and still holds that record today!
To me, I thinks thats Absolutely Incredible. To hold a world record for anything is downright cool. Also breaking one that had been held for 99 years!
Charlie demonstrated some rope and bullwhip tricks if front of the HOGS Wall Of Fame. He even tried teaching me a few tricks. Highlighted in today's video.
Then I hooked him up for an intro flight with Chris Houser in the G2 for the following day.

I think he did great considering the wind and backwards controls. I figure that would be like me trying to ride a motorcycle with the clutch on the right, and front brake on the left! Would make for an interesting ride in the beginning, that's for sure. Would take me a few hours before I could shift gears without almost going over the handlebars. That sure is a pretty bird, though. Would absolutely love to have one in the yard here. Probably not in this lifetime ... unless I get 3 more jobs and work 24/7 for at least 10 years, lol. Thanks for sharing!

The controls are not backwards. When 'reacting' to the heli turning left, hit the right pedal, same as any other heli. What is different is being 'prepared' with the correct pedal for increase\decrease in power change. There are also differences in how the Fenestron responds to a given amount of pedal as compared to a linear traditional rotor. Having said all that, you are bang on he did a great job; I was all over the place with my first flight coming from years in the R22. My challenge was the much greater resistance in the cyclic compared to flippy floppy R22.

@@nickmosley3238 - May be bad terminology, but the forces on the pedals are backwards. My motorcycle analogy was the only thing I could come up with that I’m familiar with.

Great video as ever and what a great job Charlie did at a first attempt. I have one question around the seating choice and why put Charlie in the left seat? He was basically under instruction and so surely he would be fine to be sat right hand seat with PIC instructor in the left? I would suspect as PPL on the R22 & R44 Charlie has spent very little (maybe zero) time LH seat and that would enough to cause an element of brain twist without the other aspects of taking on a new heli!

It was only a 30 minute intro. Chris did what I normally do. On a short flight for someone new to the aircraft we just do the startup from pic seat. That way the person gets the benefit of experiencing the aircraft versus half that time being burned up teaching the start up. Thanks for the question.

Hi I've been training in a r22... I'm wondering how many hrs Cris had at this point ? Also I'll be trying to fly my Mosquito soon as possible... would it be a bad idea to fly such a different craft before jumping in the Mozzi ?

You’ll be fine, the increased power and rotor inertia make it really fun. Once you get a feel for the hydraulics it’s really a pleasure. If anything I’d say you might not be looking forward to practicing hydraulic failure in the 44, but it’s just another skill we need to work on :)
