Thanks for introducing me to the smock type jacket - I'll certainly bear it in mind! The point you make about knowing your jacket for waterproofness (or not) is a good one. I've several older jackets, including Goretex which have lost proofness, especially at the seams and I go out prepared for this issue when rain is about. Yours is a good review.

Had mine a week and I love it. I agree with everything you say. Fortunately I have a huge ex mil goretex which fits right over the top, very bulky altogether but is very waterproof. Pit vents work well. Highly recommend your reviews and the jacket.

I use an old ripstop military issue gortex over the top too. Best waterproof I ever owned, very basic but just does the job it was designed for brilliantly, its my 'Go to' when I KNOW its going to rain or is raining as none of my others come close.

Its a great jacket, I guess its just compromise. Today it was showering on and off so my wife and I wore our waterproofs to walk the dog but we were both boiling after 20 minutes. This one breathes really well, but the compromise is waterproofness. Looking forward to see how it does over late spring and into the summer to see hot hot it gets.

Have had mine about the same time and agree with all that you have said.. - I also bought it for the chest pockets, but end up using the zips more.. giggled when you mentioned about wearing with a down jacket.. I did the same. it slips right off :-) adjusting the mid layer gives you so many temperature options and the venting is great.. Shame about the waterproofing.. I also tried with Nikwax but doesnt seem to have made any difference..

Did it not occur just to wear a lightweight fleece and lightweight down jacket instead of a thick fleece? Or to substitute the fleece for a lightweight down jacket altogether and then buy a more thermally insulating down jacket for when it's really cold.

@@leestockton9367 the same way most armies don’t just wear down jackets. I wanted a more robust outer layer. I don’t always walk on paths so actually wanted something that could stand up to branches. Also, now the warmer weather is here it makes a pretty good wind jacket, and for me it’s about layering. Thanks for your thoughts, but I bought what I wanted / needed cheers

Did you clean the jacket with Nikwax Cleaner? Before treatment!

I used plain soap shavings, same as for waterproof jackets which is an alternative to tech-wash.

Nikwax is rubbish - fabsil will do it.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Fabsil is indeed great for waterproofing, I've just re-done my rucksack and poncho and the water just beads off. I think it does affect breathability from what I've read though, which is important to me.
