My fiancé was totally wanting something exactly like this... something lighter than the 2 lb chair he currently uses but sturdy enough to hold his weight. This 1.5 lb chair would be awesome. I can see Helinox releasing this... and of course setting the price right in-between the Chair One and Chair Zero: $110. Haha.

Nice job, John! I use a hammock, so I always have a seat off the ground, but, for tenters, your tinkering has made it possible for chair lovers who are a bit larger than average, but don't want to pay a weight penalty in gear because of their size, to save a few ounces in their packs. 👍

This is awesome! Just ordered the Chair Zero fabric replacement from Helinox for $60. Now waiting to catch a sale on a Chair One - might wait for my REI dividend. I’m right around 270, and I was looking at the Chair One already. I’ll still probably use the heavier fabric most of the time, but for hiking and bicycle trips I can lighten it up half a pound. This is huge.

I use a version of this. Chair Zero seat with a Travelchair Joey Chair base. Weight is 1 lb 15 oz. Not that much lighter than a straight Chair One but this combo has advantages. The Joey chair comes with Anti- Sink feet. So if your travels take you to areas with soft ground or beaches this feature is huge. Plus the Joey chair seat height sits at 16" vs the Chair one at 13.8" and the Chair Zero at 11". The Joey chair is also good up to 300lbs if that matters to you.

Being a smaller guy with a Helinox Chair 0 I can see your point. Lighter is better and a camp chair is an absolute necessary luxury item after a long day hiking. Good thing the Chair 0's seat fits on the Chair 1 frame. Good on ya for trying that out. Definitely sounds like a win-win for you. Keep up the great vids.

I'm surprised that nobody commented this already, but the fabric plays into the weight rating. Those bigger attachments in the corners are there to support more weight. Don't get me wrong, I think your on to something, but I'd hate for someone to think they are getting the exact same weight rating as the chair 1 with the fabric from the 0. You are losing some, but I don't know how much
@john_kelley

That's a fair statement. I will, however say that the chair is WAY more stable with the Chair One frame. You are probably right about the weight rating taking the fabric into account.

My local MEC had a tent pole bin for discards to be recycled and a very kind rep let me for free take a few poles that I needed… so don’t discard that bent pole as could cut a new length to size perhaps n rethread the cord to have a spare chair almost as good as new. This does make me wonder if the seats will fit a budget frame? Also the helinox makes a summer seat version all mesh. Can’t remember specs thou image could shave grams with that. I’ve been eyeing the skyline ul as it’s taller n cheaper than most helinox I see. Just dang gear adds up. Tell myself if I can do stacked camping for the equivalent of what cost x days at hotel than it eases my mind or should I say pocket.

I'm going to wait and see what the new TrekChair is all about. 1.5lbs so same weight as the "Chair .5" (insert deep slomo voice), but lets you use your existing trekking poles as the back support of the chair so the chair overall has a smaller pack size. Its on indigogo right now for $89 for the chair by itself (use your own poles) and for just $30 more you can get a set of carbon fiber trekking poles from them.

Chairs are nice and all but, finding a log and using something like the cheap thermarest sit pad is an amazing, lightweight option. I used to weigh 220 and it worked really well. I broke a similar chair recently (after losing 50 pounds) and think that the weight to reliability and cost ratio make carrying a chair kinda ridiculous (for me).

I’ve never understood why people are so concerned with a few extra ounces when hiking or packing, as a hunter my typical pack weight is well over 30-40lb for a several day trip and usually it’s heavier on the way back and we still will hike 20+miles with that and it’s never been a bother, maybe on a through hike but I don’t think I’ll ever have the time for one of those.
@john_kelley
@john_kelley 3 жыл бұрын
I totally get where you’re coming from. The reason why I try to bring down the weight is simply because the lower the weight, the easier the hike. Since I’m not bringing hunting gear, I shouldn’t be carrying anywhere near the weight you are. However, if you’re ever looking to offload some venison, give me a shout. I’ll take it off your hands. 🦌
@toastiesburned9929
@toastiesburned9929 3 жыл бұрын
If your pack didn't weigh more than your hiking gear, I'd say you're probably not prepared and didn't bring everything you'll need. If you bring 30-40 lbs on a hiking trail, I'd say you're probably over prepared and brought a bunch of dead weight. When I hunt, I carry my hiking gear, I just add the slug gun, extra ammo, calls, tools for gutting and hauling, trauma kit, added survival and bush crafting tools, tinder box, 3 ways to make fire etc. Big difference between bushwhacking and hiking on trails. So base weight + situational gear = total weight. If you get your base weight down, maybe your hunting pack could do the exact same job, but only weigh 25-35? What's the down side? So if my base weight were 30-40lbs and then I added my hunting gear on top of that, I probably wouldn't hunt or hike very often

Have you tried "Big Agnes - Skyline UL chair"? It seems a bit comparable to this, but I have not tried it.

The big Agnes skyline UL is roomy, far enough off the ground and weighs one pound eleven ounces.

I prefer the Big Agnus. This one is too narrow and low to the ground for me,, The BIg Agnus is wider and sits a little higher.

I stumbled across this video .... just randomly surfing and watching yt videos and during the video I am like ... I think I know this guy. I could be wrong about this but didn't I meet you and a female friend in RRG on the trail as I was passing through in 2017 thru hiking the sheltowee trace trail? I think you two were planning/training for a thru-hike of the AT or ST. I usually always remember faces but I'm terrible with names. Anywho, if it wasn't you ... it was someone who looks pretty identical. And if it was you, hey ... long time no see lol

@@john_kelley i think that it was you ... i was headed north on the ST and you guys were taking a break in that area after the steep climb coming from suspension bridge headed toward hansons point. When you consider how many videos I could have just randomly watched on youtube, then realize you came across someones video you met once ... kinda makes the world seem way smaller lol

The backpacking Lite channel did an extensive review comparing the Helinox Chair Zero vs the REI FlexLite AIR. At the end of that super long video they state that the industry needs a carbon fiber chair with a dyneema seat. Probably would be expensive AF, but imagine a 8oz version of the Chair One.....
