Neither had Shane Van Gisbergen prior to Chicago. Helio Castroneves ran a full program in IndyCar to the end of the 2023 season. He ran the Indy 500 and rounds 5, 6 and 7 of the 2024 season. He's won the Indy 500 4 times. There absolutely no comparison to be drawn between Mike and Helio.

Not all drivers can cross race genres. I remember at the opening of the California Sppedway, they had a Race of Champions. They were bringing in Al Unser Jr. and Alex Zanardi to compete in the specialized cars at the 2 mile oval. Al Unser Jr. proved from past experiences he could drive a Nascar style car. Alex Zanardi was a superstar in open wheel Indy cars bur he was the worst driver in a Stock Car that ever walked the planet. He wrecked on the first lap, so they red flagged the race and said we'll just put him in a back up car and go again. In just a few laps he wrecked again. Just because he races cars does not mean he can drive every race car style. With Mikes Nascar experience, trust me he would finish ahead of Helio C. But Mike Wallace is not a big time Indy driver, so he doesn't get his due. I'm going to state right here Helio C. will be a giant failure at Daytona.

Later I moved and lived in Cocoa, Florida from 89-2007 and went to the 500 and 400 about 10-12 times each. Point is I like many forms of racing. I like Helio, no issues with him at all. But Mike Wallace has more stock car experience in his little toe than Helio. This is nothing but name recognition and trying to get butts in seats which NASCAR has struggled to do for many years because the stupid rules they’ve adopted. The first thing after Kenny announced Mike qualifying for the 500 I told my wife and that I have a good reason to go to the race. Last time he qualified for the 500 we met him in the infield and he was ecstatic full of life and ready to go. That is what I thought of when I heard he was going. We were so happy to meet him and he was running. That would be all I would need to see is Mike qualify and that would make my race week.
