I'm majoring in archeology and minoring in medieval. learning Old English rn, which is abt ~600 yrs pre-Zestiel's speaking style, and absolutely incomprehensible. 10/10. also trying to map Dante's inferno onto the HB map of Hell, which is... really fun, actually

@@deceitfuljester7172 shockingly not very messy at all. the first thing I realized is that they're flipped- so the "lowest" ring in Dante is the "Highest" in HH/HB and vice versa. A few rings have changed names/sins, but in ways that make sense with how cultural values have changed since Dante's time. Also in Dante's time, sinners still lived(were dead???) in all rings, but this seems to have changed as well, with everyone herded into Pride, probably explaining the overcrowding. The last thing I figured out when comparing the canons is that the "rings" we see in HH/HB are sometimes just the more densely populated areas, or those that had higher demon populations even before the sinners left. except Wrath. Wrath has literally always been like that. The most fascinating thing I've found is Dante's weird obsession with placing the rivers from the greco-roman underworld into Christian Hell (Dante LOVED Rome). If these canons WERE compatible, it suggests a whole other way to navigate between rings, if you're insane enough to try to raft/surf the sharp drops between them.
