The anime left out one bit that changes the meaning of the scene. In the manga, right after Genji brings the sword down, and before the dust clears, he says "Next time, it won't be a friendly warning...." meaning he never meant for the swing to connect, he just wanted to scare Sagiri into going home. But in the anime it looks like Genji is straight up trying to kill her... which of course does not make sense. They have been training together for many years at this point.

Genji is not a bad guy. But yea there was definitely room for character development. He didn’t deserve to die thou bc he didn’t have bad intentions, not to mention he saved her life Edit: also before people say he drew his sword on her, I personally think he was using that as a scare tactic or to see her resolve. One or the other but I don’t think he was trying to kill her
