In the very beginning of the game we see a girl named Senua who is going to hell to save the soul of his boyfriend named Dillion. She believes Dillion and everyone in her village suffered and died because of her darkness ,and Hell Queen Hela is torturing Dillion’s soul. Senua’s mother Galenna also had that darkness and committed suicide when Senua was a child to save others from her darkness. But more we play the game more truth behind this darkness’s story starts to reveal in a great way. Actually Senua is a mental patient who is suffering from severe psychosis and is dealing with the loss of her beloved Dillion. Who was killed by the Northmen Tribe! Since she suffers from hallucinations, it’s difficult to trust what you see. The whole story twists and turns as you move forward, taking down demons, overcoming obstacles, and finally coming face to face with what lies in the center of it all. The end tells a lot about Senua, so it’s important to sit back and really take it in. Senua’s father is a very religious man who kept her locked in a room full of runes so it makes sense that during her tribulation, her psychosis would use those same runes and stories to guide her along. Her father believes, to save everyone from her darkness all these stuffs should be done.Her father was not a good man and he force her to believe that she have a darkness that’s why people are dying in her village. In fact he willingly sold his own people to northmen , just to save himself. Senua starts to remember something she buried in her mind long ago, the death of her mother. Throughout the game, it’s said that Senua’s mother killed herself in order to spare those around her from her darkness. Like Senua, she suffered from psychosis, and many saw it as a curse that brought about bad tidings. Deaths, storms, bad luck, and more were believed to be caused by her. Yet, Senua's mother didn’t kill herself, though she did try very hard to not have people suffer. Instead, it was Senua’s father who led the villagers, as they burned her alive as if she were a witch. It was what the gods demanded. This memory of her mother’s death brings other thoughts rushing back as well. How her father abused her mother, kept Senua locked up and terrified, convinced her that she was cursed and that all bad things happened because of her. How it was all due to the gods and he was just trying to protect her. A rage builds up inside her and she believes that Hela is actually her father and she goes to face her. She starts to go through all the stages of grief as she moves to confront the last demon holding her love Dillion hostage. Her anger is at its highest as Hela sits over her, just staring blankly, but that eventually descends into her pleading for Dillion, her lost love, and willing to give up herself. In the end, she chooses to just accept her fate as Hela drives her sword into Senua’s chest. Senua is dead, after vowing to not let her father take her life or have any further control over her it is done. We next see Hela, holding Dillion’s skull that Senua carried throughout the entire game, staring into its empty sockets. It’s not until Senua dies, though, that Hellblade’s story all comes together. As Hela sits there with the skull, she’s no longer in Helheim. And it appears as if she is crying - not something you’d expect since at one point Senua was convinced that Hela was her father in some form. At least it seemed that way. As the final cutscene continues, Hela walks to the edge of the platform she’s on and lets the skull fall to never be seen again. As the camera pans away from the skull and back to Hela, we see Senua sitting there, beaten down, but far from defeated. It turns out that Hela was Senua deep down inside and that makes a lot of sense. Hela rules Hel in Norse mythology, and that’s the world that Senua’s psychosis created so it only makes sense that she would be its ruler, knowingly or not. While it was the loss of Dillion and her father’s abuse that drove Senua to this state in Hellblade, it was ultimately her who created this hell for herself. Her grief and the fact that she blamed herself for everything that transpired in her life caused her to turn inward and lock herself down. The voices she hears, a maddening part of her psychosis, pull her thoughts back and forth leaving her confused which made matters even worse. But, thanks to Dillion’s lessons from when he was alive, and that you hear repeated through Hellblade’s story, Senua slowly came to realize that she had to triumph over herself, that only she could escape the dark twisted world of her mind. During the fight with Hela and the discarding of the skull, Senua finds acceptance. Yes Dillion is gone, and yes her father is a large source of her pain, but she realizes that she must be strong and move on. She relied heavily on Dillion before he passed, but that’s no way to live. One must be strong alone as well and Hellblade’s story taught her that even though it was a nightmare to get through. While the voices in her mind left before the fight with Hela, they have returned at the end. Psychosis isn’t something so trivial that it can be miraculously cured, that’s just unrealistic. However, it shows that Senua has found new strength that she will use going forward. Before it ends, Senua asks us, the players, to follow her on her new adventure. One that we pray is free from the demons she fought so valiantly to overcome.

Just saying, not putting you down. I simply came round' these parts after re-playing this gem and found these comments "compelling", so to speak. The people who say this game sucks didn't understand it for what it is. It's not a hack and slash and while the game may lack slightly gameplay wise, the story more than makes up for it. It's a story about a girl haunted by herself. She went through all of these traumatic experiences and lost herself in the process, making her happiness depend on Dillion to save her from the darkness. The darkness that was born from sickness and abuse and the loss of purpose. Her quest, the ACTUAL quest, was to find herself again and by the end she realized that the only one she was fighting all along, was herself. She became Hela. She was always Hela. She surrendered to herself, forgave her father for the abuse and Dillion & her mother for leaving her too soon and most importantly, she forgave herself. She let go of the grief and hatred. The "issue" with most stories is that they contain tangible villains and mosters to be conquered and slain. Outside forces that make the hero's story difficult by always throwing hurdles in their way - not that those stories are bad, I enjoy some of them myself. However, this isn't one of those stories and that's what makes this game so beautiful. There is no purpose, no evil to defeat, nothing to blame besides yourself. I think that's what makes a lot of people angry because they want to slay their dragons and demons, so naturally, Senua's story won't satify them. It's about so much more than just defeating monsters, it's about embracing the only monster that matters: you. Edit: I really liked the final depiction of her as Hela, with the burn marks all over her and the runes etched into her skin, probably a result from the rituals her father put her through. She was finally able to look at herself, how she truly was and it's such a powerful message.
@russellmasc7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I wish all the haters (individuals and game review sites) would have this sense of understanding about this game...FYI Hela's form in Norse mythology actually has her face half burnt...its sort of a Grim Reaper thing..if Hela visits you and she shows you her beautiful pretty side...your ok...but if its the burnt side, it means you are going to die.

She was fighting her own darkness. Basically she was attached to his love and that was what was keeping her in the darkness (or lets says her psychotic and menthal world). By letting Dillion go, she left that big part of her pain go. And there will be a sequel. I am months late but I just finished this and was told the ending would be a little different if you don't get all the lorestones. I got all the lorestones. A pain in the ass but it does fill in some blanks. If you cross the last gate (right before you confront Hela), if you get all the lorestones. A short additional scene plays before you see Senua's mom. Where Druth hints he may have played a role in the destruction of Senua's village. BUT he wasn't the only one, a man in black had helped the northmen in exchange for safe passage. The man in black being obviously Senua's dad. It all adds up really. Dillion is the chieftain's son and he doesn't really care much for men like Senua's dad. I assume after the plague (where Senua's dad convinced a number of villagers that the plague was Senua's fault), Senua leaves to defeat her darkness (her psychosis) and encounters Druth in the wilds (he escaped when the northmen were sacking Senua's village) and his admission that he helped the northmen gather slaves and treasure and that a man in black betrayed his people to the northmen may have been what made Senua decide to go home. BUT back up a bit and I assume after Senua left the new chief Dillion did not hide his contempt for Zynbel (Senua's dad). Which resulted in Zynbel going to the northmen and getting everyone (except himself) killed. Poor Senua, her dad took so much from her. Her childhood, her mom, her home, and her closest friend/lover. Zynbel, is truly a piece of shit.

[moves out of the light] "i can't see anything!" nice also i just have to say, because that summary you read at the end was kind of inaccurate, this story was never about senua "beating" her psychosis. it doesn't work like that. you can't will away mental illness. the story was about courage and acceptance. she had to face her demons in order to make sense of them, to come to terms with all of the horrific things she suffered, and to learn who she really is outside of her father's lies. she didn't conquer her psychosis, but she did conquer her darkness by choosing to leave it behind and move on to "another story". it's a perfect ending to one of my favorite games of all time.

this game is legendary and will become a classic in the years to come, it is a masterpiece in storytelling, why it got a score of 80 is fucking weird considering we live in an era where games as dumb as overwatch get critical acclaim. this story can be interpreted and analysed in so many ways and can probably even be taught in colleges because it is just that good. Senua's journey has covered an array of subjects including mental health, religion, existentialism. the game's shocking imageries convey the horrors real mental patients suffer from with their hallucinations. I could write a whole essay based on this game and I wish I could but I got my real extended essay coming up. I'm gonna play this game in the future for sure, fuck the Xbox (regret buying it now), ps4 keeps getting these great titles. hellblade is going to be a classic for sure in the years to come. it's a shocking game and it is not shy to push those boundaries to new heights. this game is haunting, beautiful, disturbing and just so goddamn amazing. Gaming has evolved to a point where stories as controversial, horrifying and important as hellblade can be celebrated and it should.

I was honestly so pleased with this. The way it was presented and the overall production/creation of the game... commentator didn't talk much and for a game like this it was perfect. I felt incredibly immersed.. almost like sitting down on the couch watching a very good movie The commentating he did give seem prevalent to the situation. (filling us in on why the video was clipped and his combat commentary was the best. Minimal but to me felt like the best of both worlds. Watching a movie with some interaction.) Honestly games have come so far. I'll get incredibly discouraged when I search for a horror movie release and the trailers these days because really good ones seem to be few and far between. As if the entire horror genre is being focused towards video games instead of actual movies. This game makes me want more of the same honestly. Just as brutal and emotional. Just as terrifying in some parts. I'm drunk af excuse my lack of spelling and grammar at this point. The soundtrack is amazing. To think we got this game, and the film Split in the same year. A great walkthrough as always Brad, been watching for what feels like more than 4 or 5 years now, probably more.

Bearded Patriot I doubt there will be a sequel, I think that was just the developers talking to us at the end telling us to look forward to their next story

Okay out of curiosity i decided to look up what the runes meant at 5:21 the first one, Thurisaz (ᚦ) means protector, the second, Othila (ᛟ) means possession, inheritance or home, while the last one, Wunjo (Ƿ) means joy. The story that immediately follows is about how Senua's mother began to lose herself. Its possible that the runes are referring to Senua's need to protect her mother who was once happy? I could be wrong, any one else have another idea? I used this website: www.nordicrunes.info/wynn.php This makes me want to look up what all of the previous ones meant

People who make video games are underrated legends I swear. In school we study Shakespeare years from now people will look back and study video games and the minds of the ones who made them!

The game was just so amazing I absolutely loved the story line And the scene where she was speaking to her father and realised he killed her mother and used the curse and the gods to justify his actions got me emotional. But honestly the storyline was truly the best. I loved the game Btw Brad you are awesome keep it up 👏✊👍

And I just dont know what tp say, the game is beautiful and have some psychotic parts but overall I love this game so much!
