When I saw the eye and mouth opening appliances on the purple haired Psylocke, it reminds me of Mojo.... Psylocke received cybernetic eyes in the Mojoverse to serve as visual recording devices piped into Mojo's computers, so he could record the exploits of the X-Men.

The best part of this issue was Kwannon calling out to John Greycrow for help once she realized she was endanger. I also found their personal dream rooms the most interesting. Kwannon's Compassion, dreaming of being with her daughter was sweet. Her daughter seems even younger than I expected. Greycrow desiring Absolution isn't surprising, but was quite sad! The art really sold just how important that is for him! His facial expression when he says, "it was a good thing," is heartbreaking. It really shows how desperate he is to be good. He so badly wishes to be a good man! His fantasy was the best with Kwannon's second best! Greycrow and Psylocke seem to be the only Hellions aware they are trapped somewhere. The Mojoverse Betsy is so creepy! That robot Betsy calling Kwannon, "lesser one," was pretty terrible! I wonder if Greycrow or Kwannon will help break the other out first? I think they are the two most likely to break free and survive. I wouldn't be surprised if the other Hellions don't. Empath's fantasy was the creepiest of all! He's so evil! Wild Child's, Nanny's and Orphanmaker's was kooky, but kind of meh. Havok's was meh, expect for Sinister not wanting to watch him make out with a robot. Now we have to wait until May for the next issue.

This was just...a fantastic issue. I'm beginning to think that Zeb Wells is a gem among writers. I was not very familiar with his work going into Hellions, but I had some concerns with how Kwannon's characterization would build off of Fallen Angels going forward. And my word, Wells is not only doing justice for Kwannon, but he's doing justice for the other characters as well. Nonetheless, I'm still pretty much just interested in the two characters that brought me to the series: Kwannon and Greycrow. And I gotta say, I am very pleased with both of their portrayals in this issue. Kwannon's current narrative in Hellions has continued to build since her separation from Betsy Braddock in the Hunt for Wolverine. It wasn't until Fallen Angels that we finally have a background for Kwannon. We learn that Kwannon's history has been outlined by personal failures. While she was an exalted warrior, she never had a real name. She was named Kwannon in irony and was always intended to be an enemy of peace. Further, she also gave birth to a daughter, which was absolutely in defiance of the Hand's tenets. Her lover was executed, and her daughter was spirited away. This painful memory would continue to haunt her until the present time. What's kind of significant about this memory, in relation to this issue, is that Kwannon has a fixation with given names. Due to her past failures, Kwannon emphatically declares that her name is a shackle. One of the first things she does as a Krakoan is claim ownership of the codename "Psylocke" to spite Betsy. And what makes this issue a bit chilling and also quite tragic is that Kwannon apparently had a name for her daughter. The fact that Mastermind could not recall the name is what signals to Kwannon that she and her own team are trapped in an illusion. In my headcanon, I feel that Kwannon may have wanted to provide her daughter with a life that she, herself, did not have. This must have been what she was thinking about as she was trapped in her own body all these years--to return to her daughter and raise her. The gesture of Kwannon naming her daughter seems to be very important to her. And what makes her illusion especially tragic is that Kwannon is the only one who catches onto the farce. She literally does not buy into bliss of Mastermind's illusion, which is consistent with her characterization in Fallen Angels. Kwannon explained that Krakoa's paradise didn't suit her, and questioned if she actually deserved it. While these doubts help her realize that she's being manipulated, the basis of her realization is still tragic. She just doesn't trust being happy. Then we have John Greycrow getting a whole bunch of consistent characterization in this issue. For Greycrow, I want to emphasize how much his characterization has varied over the years since his introduction. In the exposition provided from Gambit's perspective, it was confirmed that the Marauders were not born evil. They were wayward mutants with no real goals. They were collected and assembled into a mercenary team by Sinister, and eventually coerced into doing his bidding. Sinister's design made it so that each time the Marauders died, he would clone them. And as he cloned each of these unfortunate mutants, he altered their genetic structure to have fail-safes installed. These fail-safes eventually evolved to the point that Sinister could reduce Greycrow soot with a touch of a button. We saw Sinister use this fail-safe on Greycrow in Hellions 6. Despite this basis suggesting that Greycrow served Sinister against his will, he was often characterized as an extremely vile human being. Even as recently as Uncanny X-men, Greycrow was among the Marauders when Harpoon declared that if they were responsible for more Morlock deaths, they'd be proud to admit it. He fought to the death alongside his Marauder companions. This is why I'm extremely thankful for Hellions as Greycrow's characterization is finally as consistent as it should be. He's not necessarily an evil mutant, but he's not a hero either. Greycrow, due to his healing factor, is a long-lived mutant much like Logan--though not as old. And for once, after many decades since his introduction, we see a glimmer of innocence in Greycrow's illusory prison. He ends up firing on presumably armed civilians. Apparently acting on instinct alone, he is shocked by what he had done and looks to his friends for comfort. He asks if he did "a good thing", in a way that suggests that he really doesn't know. And he finds comfort in the support of his brothers-in-arms. His illusion is called "Absolution". Absolution specifically means the formal release from guilt, obligation, or punishment. And this may be the theme of Greycrow's arc going forward. After Kwannon signals to Greycrow, the corpses of the civilians he killed turn into the corpses of the Marauders. Greycrow questions if they are his enemies because he simply doesn't know who they are, to begin with. And these are the same Marauders who attacked him, and presumably died by his hand in Hellions 1. There is just so much to unpack with this issue. I'm absolutely eating up all the evolving characterization for the Hellions. Most of these characters hardly have any background established for them. But Zeb Wells is doing an amazing job breathing life into these characters by writing meaningful development for each of them.

Greycrow desiring Absolution isn't surprising, but was quite sad! The art really sold just how important that is for him! His facial expression when he says, "it was a good thing," is heartbreaking. It really shows how desperate he is to be good. He so badly wishes to be a good man! I wonder if he wanted to be punished for defending himself against the Morlocks that attacked him on Krokoa and that's why he didn't defend himself before the Quite Council? He seems to really struggle with the concept of what is good. He looks to others, like his fellow soldiers from the past and now Kwannon to tell him what is good. Do you think that war was Vietnam? He'd fit well as a Vietnam vet and how many of the Veterans from that war came back so conflicted about what they did in Vietnam. Greycrow is a very haunted man. I agree that absolution or a freedom from guilt should be the theme of his arc going forward. His fantasy was the best with Kwannon's a close second best! @@Nightengale90 It’s definitely nice to see the team’s unity fortify itself despite the inner conflict. Kwannon and Greycrow had an unspoken trust for one another since Hellions 4. But if I’m being honest, Kwannon’s dream was more tragic than sweet for me. The way I interpret the Fallen Angels miniseries is that, outside of birth, Kwannon has never actually met her daughter. And before the unfortunate body swap occurred, I have suspect that she meant to find her estranged daughter at some point and raise her. In my own interpretation, I think Kwannon was deeply troubled for not having a name for herself. She was named in deception after a Goddess of Mercy when she was meant to be an implement for pain and anguish. This issue of Hellions shows that given names are extremely important to Kwannon, and I think the gesture of giving her estranged daughter a name of her choosing was extremely important to Kwannon. After all, your name is your identity, which makes sense for Kwannon who has always struggled with hers thanks to Betsy. And the way she speaks to her “daughter” is also peculiar. If you were a mother who’s spent all this time with a child, you wouldn’t really come out and say that making a meal for a child is something that means so much to you, as such a practice occurs with regularity. It’s just sad that Kwannon picked up on the illusion so quickly, as she did not trust the happiness she felt. She goes into a whole spiel in Fallen Angels about whether she could allow herself to indulge in paradise and immediately decides that she does not belong. The fact that the characterization established in the mini-series is what causes her to immediately question her surroundings is simultaneously satisfying and depressing in equal measure. The thing with Greycrow’s illusion is that it is, essentially, an illusion. We don’t know if it’s a specific memory of his as it’s not confirmed. But it genuinely could be. Empath’s illusion seems to be a memory. I dunno if Havok’s is a memory as I’m not too well-versed with his specific history with Madelyne Pryor. But Kwannon, Wild Child, Nanny, and Orphan Maker’s illusions are complete fantasy. I know Greycrow participated in World War II. He could have participated in the Vietnam War for all we know. But it is pretty sad but reassuring to see that Greycrow was not always a blood-thirsty mercenary in the way that he’s commonly been portrayed. I think what was most significant about his illusion is that the bodies of his victims changed to the very same Marauders who attacked him in the first Hellions issue. Greycrow killed Morlocks in the massacre, but the fact might be that Greycrow did not really understand what he was doing. He says that he doesn’t even know them, and he may not even recognize them. This could refer to the guilt he’s been carrying all this time, doing Sinister’s bidding without questioning his directive. I think with Mastermind, there’s a general misconception with his powers as only being able to conjure illusions. Conjuring illusions is something that all psychic mutants should be able to do. That being said, it wouldn’t be a surprise for Mastermind to exhibit partial or full telepathic abilities to create these illusions. After all, Magneto used Mastermind to alter Polaris’s memory, so she wouldn’t have to deal with the trauma of causing the plane crash that killed her parents at such a young age. He’s also behind the erasure of the memory of Sentry from the world (and possibly the creator of the Void). So I suspect that he is directly sourcing information from each of his victims to architect these elaborate and realistic illusions. I’m wondering if this means that Sinister’s biggest secret with the Hellions is going to get out because of this. Aside from Betsy, Sinister, and Kwannon, Mastermind is now the only other person who knows that Kwannon has a daughter. Considering that he is cooperating with Arcade only because he is holding his daughter hostage, he may act on the knowledge that Kwannon is also Sinister’s hostage for the very same reason. If that’s the case, Mastermind may blow Sinister’s biggest secret on Hellions: the fact that he’s holding Kwannon hostage with her daughter.
@Nightengale903 жыл бұрын
@@yedo8516 I get how Kwannon's dream can be seen as tragic too. Bittersweet is a very valid description for it. Identity issues and names do seem to be a big thing for Kwannon/Psylocke. Her seeming to think she doesn't deserve or can't have happiness is truly sad. Greycrow seems to be a very guilt ridden guy, who is quite desperate for forgiveness, but seems completely lost on how to achieve this. I think he'll look more and more to Kwannon for guidance with this. Maybe he'll see helping her get her daughter back as a way toward this goal and love will follow for the both of them in the process. That could be a very sweet love story to watch unfold. Who would have thought a romance between John Greycrow and Kwannon/Psylocke could be sweet? Madelyne Pryor was a pilot when her and Scott first dated. I think she quit after they got married and had Nathan/Cable. I don't think her and Havok were a thing at all until after she had started going crazy. She may have already been the Goblin Queen when they first got together. I don't know if it was clear if he had feelings for her while she dated and later married Scott. Havok had been in a relationship with Polaris at that time, but Havok has a history of cheating on Polaris so I can easily buy he was lusting after Madelyne the entire time. He did leave Polaris at the alter for a nurse he had recently met and ran off with instead marrying Polaris. I hate Havok and Polaris as a couple. Wild Child's fantasy was a twisted take on how he used to watch Sabretooth and Wolverine have their fights. Later, he was submissive to Romulus, so that's why Romulus was added to the submission part of his nightmare. I think Mastermind does have some telepathy given him changing Polaris and other memories on occasion. Kwannon didn't know her daughter's name so he couldn't use it. I wonder why he didn't just make one up for her? If John Greycrow helps free Kwannon from her nightmare, I think he'll know about her daughter. I doubt the whole team will find out. Havok and Nanny would care about Kwannon's daughter, but I don't know if Wild Child would even care. Greycrow is the only one I can really see making a big effort to help Kwannon with her daughter. Once Greycrow knows, he'd help her however he possibly could. I'm surprised Mastermind would care about his daughter's life to be honest. He was always a terrible and neglectful father to his daughters before. All of them hated him because of that. She'd also be resurrected after she was killed, so I think Mastermind is up to something else instead. He maybe playing both Arcade and Sinister to try and achieve a bigger goal.

It doesn't make sense for Mastermind to serve Arcade. If his daughter dies, she just gets resurrected. Hell it doesn't matter if the Hellions die for that matter.
@yedo85163 жыл бұрын
Well, there are a couple of things to acknowledge first. If Lady Mastermind dies, she can only be resurrected if her death can be proven. Arcade could conceivably do away with her remains to ensure that Lady Mastermind's resurrection is not cleared by X-factor or the Five. And we've already seen that witnessing a death doesn't necessarily substitute for physical evidence of death--as X-factor and the Five did not approve of Betsy's resurrection despite the X-of-Swords competitors witnessing her "death". Second, in order to be resurrected, you need to die. Putting myself in the shoes of a mutant, even with the promise of resurrection, I would not be anxious to die. Death, especially Lady Mastermind's potential death, can be a very slow, painful and horrifying experience. And the story seems to suggest that Mastermind cares for his daughter. Even if she could be resurrected, I don't see Mastermind going, "Yeah. Do your worst. Kill her. I'll just have the five resurrect her." And Arcade can certainly do worse. He could keep her alive while subjecting her to the worst tortures imaginable. Magneto did something similar with Greycrow in his Marvel Now series. He amputated each of his limbs and cauterized the wounds so Greycrow couldn't grow them back. He then left him alive as a quadruple amputee. So it's not really strange to see Mastermind cooperating with Arcade given the circumstances. For those being held hostage by Arcade, I'd imagine that death would be a release.
@illithidlore3 жыл бұрын
@@yedo8516 I imagine Mastermind would be capable of providing evidence of the threats. Betsy died in Otherworld.
@yedo85163 жыл бұрын
@@illithidlore There's a high chance that would not be dissuasive. Outside of a physical body or video confirmation of death, X-factor and the Five can conceivably deny a request to resurrect Lady Mastermind. Arcade can go a simple step further and kill Lady Mastermind off camera. Without Mastermind being able to witness the death, Lady Mastermind would be tossed into resurrection limbo until Mastermind or X-factor can secure her remains. We saw how obstinate the Five can be in the absence of a physical body in X-Factor 1. Northstar, due to his connection to his sister Aurora, felt the exact moment that she had died. Despite this knowledge, the Five directly rejected Northstar's request until he was able to produce her corpse for them. It's primarily why X-factor was established in the first place because the Five can't be out there to gather evidence of death. And it doesn't seem like Betsy actually died. I only cited this as an example as any telepath can verify that the X of Swords participants witnessed her death, and they still did not find the evidence to be satisfactory proof of death. Further, dying in Otherworld doesn't really make a difference. Resurrection will still proceed, it's just that the individuals who come back will not be the same. Hence Rockslide and Gorgon being resurrected. The main goal of enforcing proof of death is that the five cannot risk creating clones of existing mutants. If Mastermind can't prove that Lady Mastermind actually died, the five may issue a determination declaring that Lady Mastermind is a hostage of Arcade when, in fact, Arcade killed her off-camera and disposed of her remains. Outside of capturing and interrogating Arcade, Mastermind would be pretty screwed if he wanted to bring his daughter back.

I'd be glad if they make it canon that he's a Vietnam vet now. It would make sense that he'd feel even more conflicted about his actions in Vietnam given he is a Native American. So many soldiers came back conflicted about what they did there! It gives his statement, "it was a good thing," hold even more weight. He so desperately wants to be a good man, but is lost on how to be that. He looks to people like his fellow soldiers in the past and now Kwannon to tell him what is good. Nah, for all comic book movie adapted characters. Go with a young unknown pretty good actor, they use a lot of cgi now, no matter what, go all out on storyline and powers for characters. Less tokenism and more full, robust and open ended stories... Using established actors diminishes the actual adapted character. It's definitely not needed. Give the stories and characters of the movie integrity, while simultaneously allowing the directors and producers some creativity to give a character an edge... Lastly, as a collective we have got to stop pretending "mutants" were an allegory for homosexuals. This is an untrue bit of misinformation.
