"It's our concern for having that prejudice" Nailed it
@Psycomantis17 жыл бұрын
I love her for saying that. It's statements like that makes me stay in love with the Korean culture. As a black person, I almost responded to the prejudices negatively. "Fine, I'll just hate and detest them more than they do me". There were thoughts like that. Fortunately for me I learned that there are Koreans who admire my culture as much as I admire thiers. That overshadowed the hatred and is the reason why I continue to support them. There's nothing more color blind than love.

As an American who interacts with people of different ethnicity everyday, I find it quite surprising that Koreans can have prejudices to that kind of an extent about foreigners or people who look different. This should definitely be addressed especially as we live in a fully globalized 21st century
@bingbong50537 жыл бұрын
Christopher Yiwei Liang same, in one day I probably talk to many different people of colour and many different ethnicities and I've always grown up seeing a variety of people so I'm used to it now. Racism really surprises me because where I live its normal to be different. I don't understand where the hate is coming from.

As a filipino myself I find this very offensive. In the Philippines a lot of people have darker skin color than he is, his skin color isn't even considered dark in my country, we call his skin color kayumangi. Also we Filipino's never point at Koreans who come in our country and say oh look they have monolids rather that double eye lids. The raicism in Korean is too much to handle.

Actually he looks more like a Bumbay than a Filipino (though he could pass for one). Most Koreans are vain & think that whiter skin, double eyelids, high nose, V-shaped face etc., are the standards to be considered pretty thus almost everyone is doing plastic surgery
@blackvelvet16566 жыл бұрын
Saka nung tinanong siya kung anong bansa na madalas nilang inaakala kung saan siya galing, sinabi niyang sa Pilipinas parang ayaw na ayaw niya yung idea na yon. Ako din, I have lighter skin color than kayumangi. My friends and my classmates envy me dahil mas maputi ako sa kanila.

I know a girl in my class who has the same voice as the boy in the 1st concern. On the first day, we had an activity and since she was new, me and my friend decided to group up with her. When I first heard her talk, I was surprised but didn't talk about it. I thought she had a cold or lost her voice temporarily. Then a month past and she still had the same voice. I've become used with her voice now and I realized that she's confident with her voice too (she talks A LOT during her presentations) so it became normal for me. It makes me mad when she answers a question of the teacher and someone in the back says 'What she said? I can't hear, talk louder'. She obviously can't, at least try to understand. I think the only solution for him, if he can't do the surgery, is being confident.

Stephanie Almeida aww don't be! There are different beauty standards around the world. I assure you that in many European countries, tanned skin = better looking. Just the other day, my Spanish uncle told us to go out in the sun more to get really brown cause it's better to look tanned than pale. So let's not judge ourselves based on Korean beauty standards cause we dark skinned people obviously don't fit in with it. But that doesn't mean we're not favoured by other cultures around the world. At the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. 🙂

Stephanie Almeida oh right, sorry for misunderstanding your comment. I thought you found the concern hard to watch cause you can relate with it. I totally agree, it's horrible for dark skinned foreigners going to Korea to earn a living - especially considering how there are a lot of OFW's (Overseas Filipino Workers) that immigrate to South Korea to support their families! I myself am filipino, but I wasn't really hurt by the last concern cause I've come to accept my naturally tanned skin. But I know that my fellow kpop obsessed Filipino friends would get hurt by watching the last concern. I have one friend who for sure is watching this episode (cause Red Velvet is her bias group), and she told me she wanted to move to Korea one day. It's gonna be really sad for her to watch this!

I was expecting a voice more similar to a childhood friend of mine, but it wasn't the same. It was more airy though. Because my childhood friend basically had the voice of a 60 year old whiskey addict who had smoked since the age of 18, except he was 9 years old. That's a raspy voice. I don't really get why he would get teased though. I thought my friend had an unique voice, but I didn't think more of it. As far as I know, he wasn't teased about it either, although he has some problems, some form of learning disability and such. That's what he was teased for by a select few, although not much.

The third concern just shows how racism seems to be completely normal in South Korea... How come being a foreigner is a bad thing? The worst of all is the fact that the man came and his concern is "people think I'm a foreigner": is that an insult or something??? I'm honestly kind of disappointed in Wendy because she's from Canada so I thought she would speak more about concerns of discrimination and abuse. She seems rather reserved and conservative which is different from her personality when she is with Red Velvet. I'm glad Joy spoke up about her concerns and she seemed more open minded than Wendy which makes me surprised. Especially, the last guy when he got discriminated because of his skin color; Wendy said to be more brave and live confidently which doesn't help at all. I'm glad Joy spoke up and said that Korea needs to change not him. Also I'm glad the counselors actually said it was discrimination and violence.

She probably hangs out with boys more than a group of girls, assuming the count of boyfriends are real, you know how some girls are when another gets all the guys. Girls can give insight on such important matters and ways to get around parents who are like this. Sometimes you gotta be a people pleaser while staying true to yourself.

Every country has discrimination but right now we're talking about South Korea. It will never be solved if we're too busy saying "but this country does it too !"

MSH racism is a thing, i live in a third world country in south América were 88% or more of the population are mixed (that mean darker skin) And only few are white YET people think white people are better or that they look better, even richer!!!! I saw one day a girl telling another "at least I'M white" like if that give her social status

This makes me really sad that a man just looks foreign gets treated so badly then how bad must foreigners especially the darker ones must be treated. Not only in Korea but everywhere we must stop judging based on their color.Most of the ignorant ass racist are old people so I can't wait until they die but the newer generation should not be like that.We must accept multicultural life as it is the future.

doop doop. I kind of agree with you. The new generation will be better. But lets not comment the elderly korean people, because they made Korea the advance country it is today, which many of us like and want to go to one day. You know with how some dump foreigners do crap and get away with it, some even have it easier than most koreans... no wonder they don't like us. Most elderly feel like their whole life's work will be ruined when they see us- racial tension, radical dongs, twerking. Seeing the country advance makes them feel a little better and they don't see anything good about us. I think that WE foreign people also need to change too. With all the crap about us guns, drug no wonder they dont want us, cause it's a fact that there is always truth to things they see about us. If they don't want us its ok cause it's their country not ours. :\ All of us have to work hard to change for a brighter future.

What the hell is the deal with the last concern? Would him actually being foreign make it okay for people to tease and shun him? How can anyone justify themselves for treating a dark-skinned, foreign-looking or foreign person badly? Tbh he looks like a South East Asian, and as one myself, it makes me worry about how I would be treated if I ever visited Korea. The general Korean public should keep in mind that their economy would be affected greatly if more foreigners heard about this discrimination.

Spring Tempo of course it shouldn't, but it is, in many countries not just Korea. Jamaica and India for example have an insane amount of discrimination against dark people and LOADS of them bleach their skin twice a day. It's just the world we live in. If it means not being bullied and suffering everyday then yes it IS a relief to have lighter skin, though we obviously know being dark isn't a bad thing.

I still dont get why do koreans think being dark is not beautiful "Fortunetly she is pale like her mom" excuse me what did you say.. I actually felt bad for him bcs people dont treat him in a good way bcs hes darker and looks more different but according to this comment he thinks the same way as these people so he has no right to complain about their attitude towards him smh
@Eriluvie7 жыл бұрын
I feel bad about people being this judgemental with people of darker skin, but I think what he meant about "fortunately she is pale like her mom" is that her daughter won't go through the hardships he went through, because he knows what it feels and as a parent you don't want your children go through hardships. I agreed with the last part, when the woman sad "it's our concern for having that prejudice" because this kind of treatment it's by any means okay. It's 2017 already, discrimination should not be a thing. It's just wrong.

yoongi's english that's been hiding for years it's from years ago where people who's poor and has to farm, is outside all day so they're more tanned. Whereas richer, higher class people stay inside all day and stays fair.It's a constant visual class division in east Asia so being fair is desired more by eastern Asians
@jinachaoticprinceandafutur9707 жыл бұрын
KZbin obviously Got no jams but what about the people who are born dark people fron east asia still think its not beautiful even if they are born that way and it didnt come from farming like this guy he was happy bcs his daughter was borned pale so that means its just about being dark that they dont like and not about the class devision no ?
@Eriluvie7 жыл бұрын
I think this issue in particular was more about his skin tone, but the class division is a concern as well. What I'm trying to say is that the biggest concern here is the attitude of the citizens with foreign/dark skin color people in general (not all of them are like that from what I've gathered, but there's still a concerning amount of people that are this judgemental and rude to an extent to be considered as a big issue). It's sad that he had to think "oh, my daughter has pale skin, she will be okay", no one should go through this kind of treatment, it's painful to see how people are treated this unfairly because of something as natural as your skin color.
@이엘렌-z3w7 жыл бұрын

Why is it that darker skinned people in different cultures are often discriminated against. No one can help the skin they were born into and I honestly don't get how people can make fun of or judge people because of their freaking skin tone
@FOLIPE7 жыл бұрын
Ayo Ola In NEAsia it has to do with the fact that they are a homogeneous population, thus there were not many ethnic differences, so skin shade had lots to do with your social class. Like, if peasant you worked under the sun, so you got tanner, if noble you worked in a sheltered environment, so you became paler. So it is kind of different in root and way to western racism.

She is trying so hard to control everything that in the end, all 3 will hate her and leave her the first chance they get. If you want your children to learn control , you have to let them be free in making decisions.of course there should be some rules but not these kind of ridiculous shit.

dude i was thinking the same thing. like i understand that having these "rules" are what keep them disciplined, but if it's causing their social life to become nonexistent then you know you fucked up somewhere, especially since majority of the audience agree with the daughter.

Yep. She will need to have those social skills to achieve a career, or does she want her daughter to be stuck at home like she is? The girl already talks with her head bowed and in low voice, and is not confident in herself, I mean hunching over and not looking at MC because he is too handsome? what is she gonna do at work if her boss or co-worker is too handsome? hide behind the desk? Mother needs to teach her children to be confident but not arrogant, humble but not a doormat, kind but not stupid. It's a thin line between these traits but if your mind is constantly on that your daughter is gonna see a boy, you ain't a gonna teach her important things. She is obviously curious about opposite sex, why not let her have her fun, but warn her of dangers and have some little rules like always telling the truth, like where she is going, so she can send a signal in case of danger so you can help? in exchange for confidence you put in her? Sorry for the rant but these mothers annoy me a lot.

Are they not human just because they're from abroad? If people who say/do these things go to another country, I won't feel sorry if they're charged double. In my own country it can happen here and there with taxis, but not in stores or a big number of taxis. its sad that people think that the last concern wasn't a worry, and this is always how it is when is comes to foreign concerns, from the man from north korea, or the south korean albino girl, or the black guy, basically each time south korea is called out for its bigotry/racism through this show, it gets the LEAST amount of votes basically showing that these people wont change, and the guests or the host always say "you have no confidence" or something with confidence, like bitch shut up, its not his confidence its the fact that y'all treat others like trash, I'm happy yeongja said its the koreas concern...personally I'm a reveluv, so when Wendy said it wasn't a worry i gave her the side eye, ever since she "tried to act black' and "tried to speak like a black person" in a interview, i stopped liking her, cuz she's lived abroad so i thought she'd be more open minded, its weird cuz she was my bias at first
@ethana.60457 жыл бұрын
But the thing is, just because Wendy lived abroad, doesn't mean she'd be more open minded. She lived in the whitest parts of the US(Minnesota) and and a rich white neighborhood in Canada, so she had almost no exposure to other races, which is probably why she didn't know how to act in those cases in which she said discriminatory things. She still has a lot to find out.
@DoubleUD6 жыл бұрын
Solid analysis. To me Wendy doesn't look like a bad person at all, but as you implied, she might be naive on a lot of cultural stuff which apparently isn't too uncommon. I'll probably always have a soft spot for her - seeing here legitimately pout almost broke my heart - but I find it easier to understand nowadays why people are put off by her. I'm happy Joy didn't follow the herd and voiced her own opinion, she probably has a strong personality for her to do so.
@Jessifiy7 жыл бұрын
When we see concerns like the third man's, it makes me realise how grateful i am to live in a multicultural country. Of course there are still racist people, or people who are simply careless with their words, but the majority of us don't think anything when we see a non Caucasian person on the street. We have so many different races all living together in my country, that it's not strange to see so we don't comment on it. I understand in a way why strangers would point and stare, it's someone who looks different to them, and most people will just be curious, but they need to learn that it hurts the other person when they react like that. Unfortunately, for foreigners (or foreign looking people) to stop having to deal with negative comments, there has to be more foreigners living in Korea so that the native people can get used to it. There has to be those strong first people, to pave the way for everyone else.

She wouldn't think it was a concern because in Canada it primarily isn't. Where she lived near Toronto, there are so many different people from all kinds of different countries. I, myself, was born in Portugal, moved to Canada and became a Canadian Citizen. In Toronto where I was raised, my elementary school, Lord Landsowne, had 70% Cantonese, maybe a slight exaggeration. My first crushes were the popular boys, Michael Yan, Eddie Chu and David Hoy, who's families came from Hong Kong. The more I see of the world and how bigoted some countries still are I give thanks that I was raised in a country like Canada, where if I saw any racism, I was quickly taught how wrong it is. Although I understand how difficult it is in countries with very little chance of seeing other nationalities, especially the rural areas, it still is 2019 and the world is that much smaller with worldwide internet at mostly everyone's fingertips, so try to learn compassion and open your hearts people.
