What a production this was! Too bad I live across the pond so I was never getting a chance to catch this. Imelda Staunton was lights out as Dolly Levi every performance

I saw this shortly after it opened; what an unforgettable show.

This was such an excellent recording. You can hear the beautiful subtleties of the orchestra that really helped make this revival the extra mile that it was

Very happy to hear other people enjoyed it but I miss the glorious stage arrangements. I hate that they made everyone follow the movie orchestrations. That tinny Warner Brothers sound of the 60s losing all the elegance (no pun intended) of the score. To my taste, the various Broadway orchestrations (especially the last two revivals) has a freshness to them, that feels like an old fashioned musical but never feels stilted. They have such warmth. This, like the film has a brittle quality. It makes it feel dated. Also, the fuck are the female ensemble doing on the 'oh!' towards the end. And if you are taking the 'Mr Hackle, Mr Tucker don't forget Irene and Minnie' lyrics (which are a good addition) at least make sure they rhyme with what came prior.

@@bigred8432I gotta disagree. I think what was so brilliant about this production was how it took the best parts of the film and the stage musical and stitched it together in one spectacular production. I thought everything about it was so much more refined and, yes, elegant, right down to the tiniest details in the sets and the orchestra. The orchestration of POYSC here made sense to me, as the only number which, to me at least, had that tinny quality because it’s kinda supposed to sound like a train, all building up the the climactic moment where the huge train comes through the stage. The orchestra overall sounded so much more playful and emotional to me, and it all really helped tie together the emotional devastation of this revival, the likes of which we have never seen in any production of Dolly. To me, it all worked together so harmoniously. It had that exaggerated classic feel with the right amount of classic MGM musical vibes

@@Bend818 I think it's a case of 'having your version of the show' I saw Bette Midler and this just didn't compare for me. But I daresay it would be different and it been the opposite way. I really don't like the orchestrations because I feel it undermines the emotion of the number but I love the show and thrilled you enjoyed this production so much :)

@@GalindaWithaGa12the classic American production of Hello Dolly is not exactly like the Barbra Streisand film, the music in particular is quite different (you can find many videos of the Broadway revival of youtube!) Haven’t heard much audio from this London production, but from what you’ve uploaded, the songs are much similar to the movie than they are in the original American stage production.

The vocal performances are quite good, but the arrangement and orchestration just feel funny. The modulations are just bizarre and make the more movie-inspired orchestration feel even odder.
@dukeofrodtown170512 күн бұрын
If you listened very closely, you’d indeed hear that the arrangements from this production are not really that identical to the movie. Though you and many others are right that this production emulated a lot of elements from the movie (costume design most notably), the orchestral arrangements are not one of them as there are many uniquely distinct differences.

@@dukeofrodtown1705never said they were the same, but they are clearly more influenced by the film in this song than the original Philip J. Lang orchestrations for the stage musical.

@@cosmos7912 Yes, but elements of those original orchestrations are intact, too.
