Yvonne De Carlo headed up a bus-and-truck tour of "Hello, Dolly!" and these clips are from the first stop, New Haven, CT., January 1969. Two years later, De Carlo's impressive vocal skills would be heard on Broadway when she created the role of Carlotta in "Follies."

This post has unearthed a new awareness of Ms. De Carlo, whose performance in "Follies" on vinyl is well known and appreciated, but this offers a glimpse into Ms. De Carlo, which is very different than what I would have expected. She is focused, committed, feisty, and plays the role HER WAY convincingly. She also seems to be having a ball. Aurora Spiderwoman, your channel is a museum and a treasure, "Doly'll never go away!"

So glad you enjoyed. Just thought people might enjoy hearing her sing something other than the classic that was written for her, "I'm Still Here."

@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Or as they say in ballet when someone originates a role "I'm Still Here " was "made on" her. And what it good fit that was! Ms. De Carlo really had quite the pipes and now I wish for an Auntie Mame or dare I say Mama Rose a la De Carlo? I am being greedy I know! Also she seems to have been quite the trouper. That "Dolly" tour had over 2 dozen stops in the course of 5 or 6 months. Thanks for the personal response and I am very honored to have my comment pinned.

I love De Carlo's Irish accent. Her vocals are powerful! Listen to that last note she sings on BEFORE THE PARADE PASSES BY. I'm sure the audiences that were lucky enough to see her in the smaller cities of her tour were totally delighted. I would love to hear her entire performance - but how I appreciate these edited clips. I love the straightforward tempi that the musical director chooses for her songs. THANK YOU!!! It's too bad that she didn't get to sing in more movie musicals. My first Dolly was Dorothy Lamour and with Lamour's performance I began my life long love affair with Dolly G. Levi. Oh, how I hope a recording of Lamour's Dolly emerges.

Without seeing it live, who knows? But the accent seems to undercut her beauty and glamour, and probably pointed them up too.

This is the performance I had a ticket for when I was 13 - her DOLLY tour was coming through Joplin Missouri, my hometown - and I just HAD to see Yvonne (I was a huge fan because of THE MUNSTERS) - but as it turned out she was out sick that night and her understudy went on (who I later found out was Helen Reddy's older sister). I loved it even without Yvonne - it was my first stage musical and I was hooked forever!!💙

You must have seen Toni Lamond, one of Australia's biggest musical theater leading ladies, also the mother of Tony Sheldon (seen on Broadway in "Priscilla...").

I saw her in Dolly and she was wonderful. She used a little Irish brogue - Dolly GALLAGER Levi, after all. It sounds a little odd in these clips but was light and lovely in person and a unique take on the character. Really loved her.

This is exceptional! I'm admittedly only familiar with her from "The Munsters," and had absolutely no idea she could sing like this. Thanks, as always, for sharing!

De Carlo also toured the "star" summer stock circuit as Joanne in "Company." Incidentally, her Dolly seems to have a bit on an Irish brogue, emphasizing the fact that she was Miss Gallagher before she was married to Ephraim Levi.

Saw her in Sondheim’s Follies in 1972, this must before. Wow, never knew she did Dolly, but it makes sense cause it toured all over the United States giving old time movie stars a chance at the stage . I saw it when it came to Philadelphia with Ginger Rodgers and later on with Ethel Merman in New York, Betty Grable and Martha Raye also did it on Broadway after Carol Channing stepped down

Fantastic. Gotta love her. And the quick tempos are perfect (so many shows slow down tempos nowadays which brings fast yawns from an audience).

“The Streisand version” was very poor because she was 25 years too young and the entire storyline made no sense. Who would trust a 26/27 year old to advise them on life when she hasn’t lived it?

@@johnpickford4222 you may have found it too poor because you knew about the other. For me, in Portugal, a kid at the time and never having been to a musical, it was wonderful. Michael Crawford is excellent, too.

I knew that she sang, but in a bootleg recording? Her pitch is just so dead on!! Every single note smack dab in the middle of it. Would love for her to have taken a little more time in the monologue, but her rendition is right up there.

Well, Dolly is suppossed to be an Irish woman, right? Her last name is Levi, which has Irish origins. De Carlo's vocals are amazing. Thanks for posting!

As she says right at the top of the show, she was "born Gallagher"; Levi is her married name.
@johnpickford4222
@johnpickford4222 2 жыл бұрын
No, the character name is referred to “Dolly Levi, born Gallagher” meaning that she was of Irish descent but married and then widowed by someone of the Jewish faith named “Levi”. “Levi” is not a name associated with the Irish. Not even “Paddy O’Levi”.

Spoken like a liar, I mean lawyer, who fights the fight for everyone at the ACLU in addition to having performed and directed on many of the local Detroit metro community theaters and clubs. But yes she sings the score better than her role in FOLLIES. And while her accent appears to come and go it is an interesting take on the role and seems very human.
