Louie Shelton played the original solo. He was working with the "Wrecking Crew" in the 60s. He lives in Queensland Australia and is still busy performing, recording and producing. He turns 74 today. Happy Birthday William Louis Shelton! Great lesson btw Mark, I enjoyed it very much!

If you're still out there...the original YES guitar player, Peter Banks, has been purported as playing the guitar solo. If you listen to the first two Yes albums it certainly SOUNDS like Peter Banks, who had that "Wes Montgomery" style of playing (no slight to Louie). Wikipedia says some chap named Darrell Jones (not the Miles Davis/Stones bassist Daryl) plays guitars on the track. I'm confused! I know Louie even has KZbin videos of him doing the solo, but to my ears, it still sounds like Peter. I wish I had the original album, as it might actually list who is really playing this sublime solo!

Hi Mark, thank you so much for your detailed explanation of this beautiful guitar solo. You see, I tried to get the notes by myself, but the octaves parts of the solo were always difficult for me as a beginner. Even though it doesn't have a tab incorporated on the video, your step-by-step explanation has been all I needed to play the whole solo at last. Now I'll make a rehearsal with my band mates in order to play it for a wedding feast soon on December, 'cause this song fits perfectly for the occasion. I'm really grateful for taking the time to make this video for all those who, like me, wants to play this beautiful guitar solo. Greetings from Santiago, Chile.

Hey Mark. I just finished learning this solo from "Hello". I got everything but the octave parts is a little tricky. My fretting hand is asking me..."What the hey is this"? "This is new". I got it tho, just not quite as smooth as you. You are right about this song bringing back memories. Such a memorable solo. In '85 I was 16 and got my first Kramer electric. Couldn't play tho.lol. Thanks for the great lesson. Aloha from Hawaii.

Hi! Glad it brought back some memories for you. I was 19 that year and probably played it on my 335 (which I still have!). It was a huge step up from my Ibanez LP copy (not the good ones) that was my first electric. Stick with the octaves. They're really nice to use, especially in R&B. Thanks for stopping by!

Mark - thank you so much for putting this together!! Sadly when you were woooing girls in high school with this, I was trying so hard to learn this right after graduating college. Now, 30 years later, I'm trying the guitar again - wish I had never quit!! To be trying this solo is a dream come true!! Just one question: Around 4:41 when you say, "walk up on the 3rd with a 4, 5 and 6" - it looks in the video like you are hitting 4, 5 and 7 (with your pinky). I'm just trying to play it as well as you do!! Thanks for helping me play something I never thought I could!!

+Llewellyn Anthony Carr Got to keep the wife happy! :) I love the song Sir Duke (whole album actually ... Saturn being my favorite ... dig the message especially), but I need a clarification. Are you looking for the unison runs with the bass and the horns? There's not much of a guitar part there. Are you maybe looking for a "how would I play it if I were in a band" sort of thing? Sorry for being so dense.

Thank you very much Mr. Mark for writing. Yes its the Bass and horn runs. as we have no horn section (especially here in India) in our band, we are trying to work this out on Guitars and keyboard..just to let you know we are a Standard Five-piece Band and play Country, Pop. Rock, Reggae and a pinch of Jazz and Blues

Thank you! I appreciate your listening and commenting. I really like your suggestion - that whole sort of sound and style is my favorite. I actually got to play with Joe Messina (king of the backbeat in all of the early Motown recordings) and played guitar for one of the (ex) Del Vikings members in one of his regular bands during the '80s. I don't think we played any Billy Stewart, but it's great stuff. I'm happy to put it on the list. Thanks!!
