I think it's a lot simpler, actually. They appear however the person they're appearing to perceives them. Public perception of Roku was as an old man, wereas the others would have been most recognizable as younger adults. It would also explain why Aang appears to Korra as a younger man in his prime as the Avatar, but to Tenzin as a middle-aged man, likely how he appeared before he died.

It's what the person needs from them. If it's guidance then the avatar would come in the form they aquired the knowledge needed for guiding you. If it's to calm you it could be a playful child avatar or an Old person.

I have 2 theories: 1: Their appearance is the same as the LAST time each individual goes into the avatar state. the Avatar state is when the Avatar’s human spirit is closest to the spirit of all their successors. When this happens, the spirits all form a permanent connection at that moment during which all knowledge and physical power (including their appearance) is bonded. If an Avatar appears much younger than they were when they died, this would mean they didn’t need to rely on the Avatar state for a long time prior to their death, which makes sense, as most Avatars only faced a few significant threats before momentarily restoring balance which could be maintained until their successor emerges. 2: in Buddhism (which Avatar draws most of its spiritual concepts from) spirits’ appearances are solely meant to be recognizable forms for the person interacting with them. This is to say they could appear differently for each person based on when they would look most familiar. Aang only ever sees Roku as a statue, which is why he sees him as an old man in his formal attire. Aang’s statue depicts him at the age Korra sees him in. This is because the art depicting them influenced their perceptions of what they looked like, making the spirits appear in the most recognizable form. Tenzin, on the other hand, saw Aang much more recently before his death, which is why he was able to see him as an old man.

Number 2 is very interesting although the Avatar Aang statue was a depiction of 12yr old who just saved the world from the fire nation. Korra sees Aang at an adult age during the times of Yakone. Altough this confirms you are wrong, I am happy to accept your idea on the case since it seems very spiritually correct, might have been that the creators just didnt think as far as we are doing right now.

Would be wondeful if a new avatar series started focusing on the avatar after korra, an earthbender. Then his story will unfold in his journey and life in the spirit world where he has a quest on seeking and rejoining his past lives until the avatar is made whole again. Him finding them from the most recent avatars cluing him until he reaches the first.

I don't know about modern. It seems to do a bit of time jumping based on real world culture but I believe that it might be based around maybe the 50's or 60's. It seemed like korra was around the 20's. So modern would probably be the avatar after the earthbender avatar after Korra, the fire bending avatar. But I guess the 50's would be closer to modern times. Though there is a chance that the new fire avatar would be based around the 80's or 90's making the modern one actually be the new air bending avatar since Aang so many years ago.

Just a thought couldn't the world fall into perpetual war because of all the things that are happening in the age of Korra? Like stuff is starting to kinda get out of hand with mechs and specific bending being a dime a dozen. I think it would be much more interesting that the new avatar grows up in a hostile story of constant war which will make him/her strong AF (even stronger because of earth bending stubbornness). It would also make them mischievous and opportunistic. It would be much different and the potential for story telling and conflict would be infinite. You could literally take it any direction. The avatar finding balance in themselves and the elements. The avatar overcoming pride through the pursuit of power. The avatar becoming desperate and taping into the avatar state destroying or defending a city/army/village. The avatar trying to bring balance back to a world that is falling apart. And there would be such a diverse amount of supporting characters. I think that would be more interesting just a thought.

Having a more modern time period for the next avatar makes sense. If the next series was in the fifties or sixties, Korra would live a very short life living less than Aang. I want Korra to live a long happy life, she deserves it.

I think the previous Avatar's appearance is determined/selected by what the next Avatar needs when they first meet them or would find most comforting. Aang sees Roku as an almost grandfather figure much like Monk Gyatso, which makes sense given that he lost his people and felt like he needed guidance at the time. Roku sees Kyoshi as a young woman when he was a young man training away from home (presumably.) Korra sees Aang as a father figure when she feels like she's failed as an Avatar, and we see her comforted and protected by her father in the series. The other Avatars I don't know enough about to really make any determination.

Cornel Tanase air benders don’t get the tattoos early, Aang and Jinora are just two of the youngest air bending masters ever. Aang was considered a prodigy before the 100 year war and created the air ball that he rides on by himself, which is why he got his tattoos.

I've never even seen Legend of Korra except for a few episodes, but I immediately knew that it was his proudest moment when he finally had an air bending kid. Continuing the air benders was definitely his proudest moment. The entirety of The Last Airbender was dealing with his guilt towards what he saw as his greatest mistake, letting the air nomads die. I think it is even because of this that he had such a hard time learning the other elements because his guilt got the best of him in majority of scenarios. Finally achieving a rebirth of the air benders would have essentially cleared him of all his guilt, finally, and that's why I figured it would have been the birth of his air bending son that he finds his most defining moment.

Late to this, but I think they take on the form they had when the Avatar last entered the 'Avatar State'. It isn't something that would probably occur that often (due to the risk of ending the Avatar line), so I feel like most Avatars would avoid it in old age and only use it when necessary. So, all of the Avatars seem to look how they did at the oldest point that we (the audience) have seen them go into the state: Aang at the trial, Roku fighting the volcano, kyoshi making the island, extra. In addition, I think it is safe to assume that Aang never went into the avatar state again after that moment for the fact he wouldn't have had a need to... So yeah, the form they take is how they appeared as they last went into the Avatar State. Fun thought though

1:20 in the kyoshi books her spiritual mentor, lao ge, teaches her about immortality. he himself is immortal. he mentions to her in passing that immortality is basically achieved through keeping the order in your body and not letting it deteriorate. by doing that though, your body stays the same forever, which is why kyoshi looks like that even at 230 years old.

Maybe Aang is in his 40's in the spirit world. Of course it makes sense that he would be overjoyed at the fact that his son was an airbender but Tenzin is just a baby in the picture he doesn't look older than a couple of months so surely not old enough to be bending elements (do we even know when a bender receives their bending abilities). What if Aang's defining moment was the moment when his only airbending son gained his airbending tattoo's and decided to follow his father's philosophy by becoming an air nomad. The timing makes sense, if Aang was 31 when Tenzin was born and assuming Tenzin was around the same age as Aang and later Jinora was when gaining their tattoo's so around 12 then he had to be around 43 when this happened. The knowledge that his son would be carrying on his legacy and his people's legacy would have made him the proudest father alive. I don't get why people hate on Korra for referencing Aang too much. Those references to the 100 year war is as much a part of their history as both world wars and the cold war was to us. I just think that it makes sense to have the war brought up, the end of it would still be prevolent in some people's mind, especially older generations.

Yeah but no. Kyoshi may have created the Dai Lee, but they didn't turn against her in her lifetime. In fact, I believe they only became corrupt very recently. Remember that we had 2 whole lifetimes between Kyoshi and Aang, 3 lifetimes if you consider the 100 years Aang was in ice. And also Aang did effectively stop Yakone to his knowledge. He never found out that his sons had taken up the art since he had them after his bending had been taken, and neither of them took action until after Aang's death. As well as that, but Roku's biggest regret was sparing Sozin that day. When he was still a young man. He only realised that regret late into his life.

Wonderful video! You almost had me tearing up there when you were talking about Aang's most significant moment being the birth of Tenzin. I think that theory makes a lot of sense. Hey, I've got an idea for a future video: do you think the Avatars still existed in the Spirit World even after Korra broke her spiritual connection to them? And if not, what happened to them? Were they just erased from existence? It's always been a bit puzzling to me just how much the Avatars exist as *individual* people vs. reincarnations of each other. If they are all individuals, then presumably their spirits would end up the same as the spirits of all the other humans in the world. And if human spirits end up in the Spirit World (do they? IDK?), then presumably all the Avatars would still be around there somewhere. It's just they can no longer communicate with the current Avatar like they used to. Right? I mean, I don't know? Sorry, I know that's not very well explained. You could probably make like 3 different videos out of that ramble. But I guess the question is: 1. What happens to individual people when they die in Avatar world? 2. Are the Avatars all individual people? and 3. If so, then could they all still be hanging out in the Spirit World, but no longer connected to the current Avatar? (I admit, part of the reason I ask this is because it's too painful for me to think that Aang & Co. really just poofed out of existence for good.)

I have a theory on where Tims pants have gone. Spyro, being the evil dragon that he is, has stolen all of Tims pants to use against him. Spyro blackmails Tim every day into embarrassing himself by making memes of his poor clones. Spyro insults him and his clones as we can see in most of his anguish-filled videos. Can't you all see the secret messages he sends to us, hoping that one faithful day, someone out there will figure them out and come to his aid. It is sad that Aang didn't make equal time for all his kids, and Kaya and Bumi have every right to be upset, but it doesn't make me like Aang any less. It's good that he wasn't a perfect flawless character. He had his flaws and desires and it made him more human than just being a demi-God, but to not to the point that he would stop being relatable and likable. Even after the complicated relationship he had with his family, they still loved and respected him. Katara was his best friend and loyal partner whose bond and love for each other grew over the years even after his death; Bumi felt like a failure for not developing his Air Bending powers sooner and honoring his father but he's been reassured by family and friends that Aang would've still been proud of him; Kaya (SPOILER from Korra comics) came out to Aang and he gave her his love and support; Tenzin had a lot of built-in pressure being his father and carrying on the legacy, but even after death, Aang assured him that he didn't expect him to be an Aang 2.0 but being himself. Overall, he wasn't a perfect person and/or parent, but he was and is still loved for who was

You had to show me those clips of Aang and Roku, and the avatars blowing up... I don't think I'll recover from that for a bit. Also interesting theory, it makes a lot if sense. Also, there are quite a few times in ATLA and LOK when people look epic in their sleeping attire. Also why do Bumi and Kya insist on a different story than Tenzin remembers, it's not Like he is making this up out of the blue, and I know Aang would give more attention to Tenzin, but doesn't seem like someone who would just completely ignore his other children. Just a thought.

Raptorus77 It's not that Tenzin is making up the stories, he is not remembering them correctly. Tenzin's view of his dad, shaped by the fact that Aang spent the most time with him, is that he was a fantastic father who spent a lot of time with his kids. But that's looking through rose-colored glasses. Aang wasn't a bad father, but with Tenzin being the only known airbender in existence Aang had to spend as much time as he could instilling Tenzin with air nomad culture before Aang passed, making Tenzin a sort of avatar of air nomads. If Kya and Bumi had tagged along he couldn't concentrate on shaping Tenzin into that avatar, so they got left behind frequently, making Kya and Bumi bitter toward their childhood. It's not that Aang ignored them--Bumi was a teenager before Tenzin was even born. Bumi and Kya had that attention, but it was suddenly taken away when Tenzin was discovered to be an air bender. This series isn't afraid of portraying favorite characters with atypical parenting. Toph, for instance, had two children from two different fathers, and gave her kids so much freedom that Toph ended up being unhappy with how either child turned out.

I think it's a case of Tenzin looking at Aang with rose-colored glasses, while the other two were looking at him in a skewed negative light (what would the metaphor for that be? Poop-colored glasses?). The truth is that Aang was somewhere in the middle -- he wasn't a bad father, but he definitely wasn't the greatest. He made mistakes, and he favored Tenzin a bit over the others. It's sad that he did that, but also pretty understandable considering the circumstances. Bumi and Kya felt left out a lot, and that colored their memories of their dad (fairly or not). Likewise, Tenzin got a lot of attention, and that also colored his view of his dad (fairly or not). I don't think any of them were remembering things with perfect clarity.

What I don't get is Bumi being jealous. He's much older than Tenzin. He had a headstart on GAang time. As a younger siblings I think Aang did fine focusing on the younger child given he was confident Bumi was a good elder sibling. [Interestingly, Bryke had at one point considered all three children being airbenders and later, Tenzin AND Bumi being airbenders while Kya was a waterbender - the latter came true in a sense when Harmonic Convergence came into play. You might also be interested to know that, if head writer for ATLA Aaron Ehasz - the guy who convinced them to make Toph a tomboyish tween girl rather than a teenage jock boy, for instance - had his way, one thing we would've gotten was a Book 4 which saw Aang ACTUALLY find some Air Nomad survivors; Ehasz, who helped with much of the world-building for the original series, has expressed mixed feelings about some of the ideas Bryke had for expanding the lore and the world.]

I have a head canon where the past avatars did live there after death, and its only Korra's connection to them that was lost. Why dont we see them? Because there is a story Korra has never seen where basically the various avatars have been working together to try and save the one avatar's wife from koh. Its a journey that involves time travel, multiple dimensions, etc....(think the hints of The Time War and its craziness) it culminates after Korra removes the connection with basically all the past avatars enter koh, fuse together, combining personalities and memories, overriding kohs personality and creating a sorta "spirit avatar koh". I mean they are not "dead".....just part of a geshtalt mind.

It might be that they appear as the moment they trully felt as being the Avatar, when the graduated from kid to adult somewhat, from a person with lots of power to a real symbol, and a symbol they themselves saw as the Avatar... Amazing theory! Thoughts that occurred: -how genetic/spiritual is the gift of bending, or what determines who gets the gift? If it were worthiness what would say about Azula, Ozai, and others who used it for harm, or does that just mean it’s not worthiness -is the nature of bending like genes in the sense that sometimes even though you have them, they might need to be triggered by environmental factors, -is bending like it’s inside everyone but only some can “awaken” it sorta thing -can benders exist in atypical places in the world and just not know it? Like could there be an earthbender in the northern water tribe and they never know because of the distinct lack of earth? (Does being surrounded by the element affect the chances play a part in whether someone can or cannot?) -how does parental style affect the abilities of a child in terms of abilities to bend/not bend, especially in terms of philosophy and character traits? -like could an earth bender be stunted if they were raised with philosophies of air nomads? -and how would things be if there were a case like that wherein there were parents who were earthbender and airbender (it could happen i mean, opposites attract?) -how old can you be before you know that you can/cannot bend, or maybe you always can but because there’s a time when most give up the search and cannot handle anymore false hope, they just never have the moment it is “triggered” i guess - what if the world needed an avatar but the avatar didn’t even know he/she was the avatar yet - how each of the nations identify the avatar (korra was easy, aang had toys, roku idk...) -anyone else curious as to themes of resentment/child labor/living vicariously should a parent or sibling who really wanted to bend but wasn’t granted the gift -kind of like how sozen was a bit resentful of roku but imagine a more familial connection where they’d have to see each other constantly -back then, who really had the authority to train the avatar? Or could they be born without their nation -what would happen if an avatar resented the idea of an avatar and his/her responsibilities and tried to end the line by doing what sozen did? -how important is it for an avatar to be political? Like, in terms of making enemies and all, how should they think about the next avatar? -like roku said, he could have handled his ex friend sozen before the - -why was it necessary for aang to go to the fire nation temple at the solstice to talk to roku in book 1? -roku wanted to talk to him, so why not go for simpler ways like appearing in his dream? -if it’s difficult for some avatars, like korra, maybe like leave a note or something like “fyi watch out because x people are pissed at me, aka you. I think is more related with how they were remebered. Kyoshi is remembered with that apparence because of her statue, and the Kyoshi Wariors. Aang was remenbered as the good adult avatar Aang who created the republic city, etc.

Maybe Aang appears a bit older than the picture because his accomplishment with the Airbender was when the young Tenzin got his tattoo (aka: When the Air Nomad tradition was properly inherited); but yeah; without a doubt Tenzin is the thing that Aang most valued in his existence.
