Love Dendrobium v-r, it is my favourite non fragrant Den. Mine also blooms most of the year but the best flush it gets after the winter rest in May-June (UK). Regarding the weather it really depends where in the Northern hemisphere one lives lol. Your winter sounds like summer here in the Scottish Highlands. Rain almost every day and temps between 6C-20C. Happy growing

Wow Matthew! What an amazing set of blooms. It’s summer here and blooms more scarce this time of year for us. My sphacelatum also has massive spikes, 3 ft long, like yours. Your sound was good. I’m not sure what others experienced. Keep these videos coming!

It’s hard for me to grow orchids of any kind. We are indoors bound due to heat, hence constant AC running from May thru September here. (Northern Texas, USA). I can provide some humidity with dishes under plants, but my hygrometer is still mostly reading 50%. I have a west facing window with the best light in my house, and through winters which are, surprisingly pretty cold, our heat runs constantly which also decreases humidity in the house. I am looking into a humidifier of some sort, option #2 is to ‘terrarium style’ grow them in an effort to keep blowing AC or heat off the plants. Sigh. Wish me luck. I currently am reattempting a few new orchids, but will not do more until I have conquered my challenges. I plan on using a grow light in winter and moving the orchids where it is warmer to an inside room. You seem to have it figured out!! ❤
@helloplantlovers Жыл бұрын
Oh wow - that sounds like a challenge - but all the Australian Dendorbiums might do well for you outside with a bit of afternoon shade, & Sarcochilus with even more shade - do you get freezing winters though? Also Epidendrums can take direct fierce direct light, dry conditions, and cope with cold - non freezing - winter temps. Good luck!
@loribadgero1035 Жыл бұрын
@@helloplantlovers Yes, our winters freeze, and we get ice storms for a day or two, yearly. Well, my current recently acquired plants seem to be doing well, for now. I have topped the pots with moist spag moss, so they receive a little more humidity. I’ve had them three days, they seem to be ok, in spite of a rocky start, and my anxiety levels are dropping, slightly. Time to do what I know to do, to get them growing. Thank you for the suggestions! We get extreme outdoor heat in the summer, >110f, with too many bugs for me to consider putting anything outdoors. It is a challenge. Happy growing! 🪴👍🤗🥰🪴

You mentioned that you grow several of your orchids indoors. But what is the day and night temperature, and the humidity in the house? I am always busy with a heater, fans, and humidifier. Btw here in The Netherlands is about mid summer and it is cold, windy, rainy. Just miserable. Kind regards.
@helloplantlovers Жыл бұрын
Hi there - I don't measure either I'm afraid. I honestly don't consider those factors - the house is what it is - warm enough for me - a bit chilly in winter - a bit too hot in high summer! As I choose not to use other equipment the plants I grow either thrive or don't in my conditions. Most commonly grown hybrid orchids will love the same conditions as you! Good luck with yours!

Great vid Matthew. Here in Geelong, sharing the same cold miserable weather as you :) two of my Cymbidiums ( Carolina cracker ) have already flowered & faded some time ago, now I have five in bloom or with flower buds, they are red/ pink ones. An Orchid grower advised me that often the yellows bloom early, followed by reds/ pinks and the other colours later. Not sure how true this is but the Carolina Cracker were yellow/ orange. So maybe they have a colour sequence when they bloom ?
@helloplantlovers Жыл бұрын
Interesting? I don't have a yellow one - I'll have to be more observant of the sequence!
