Fun fact you can replace the 1.8l v6 or 2.0l v6 engine in a Lantis with the 2.5l v6 in the Probe. But if you're going to do that you may as well get the KLZE. Will even run on the Lantis 323F BA ECU, wiring etc.. There's a reason Pontiac went under. I'd call that Ferrari color bronze. Cavalier Z24 86-87 with the V6 and 5 speed would be more fun. If you want a Beretta you go to the Beretta forum. I've driven a 1 of 5 (possibly only 3) Beretta convertible... that was never sold. 90' Indy pace car. Only the actual pace cars were convertibles and this one was hands down the coolest looking Beretta. although it was not safe. ASC made all the cars. One is in a museum. The majority of the cars he mentioned were not even eligible for cash for clunkers. Clapped out Explorers and other trucks and SUVs were the main casualties of cash for clunkers. On top of that all the cars scrapped during cash for clunkers was only a tiny drop in the bucket in comparison to all the cars junked when scrap was sky high around 07/08.

My father had a Subaru XT, I loved that thing. It's where I fell in love with cars. The digital dash was awesome - there was a mini XT on it that would drive along. Pressing the red 4WD button on the shifter would "fill in" the wheels on the digital dash. The car would lower at speed, also controllable with buttons on the pods. The mini car on the dash would actually raise and lower! You point out the asymetrical steering wheel, but the manual version of this car had a fighter-jet style shifter boot. It was like a joystick, not leather or fabric. The "square" wheels and pop up headlights make the XT pinnacle 80s.

Growing up our family had a Lumina APV. This was around the first time we went to Disney so I’ve always had a fondness for those vans looking like a monorail to me. Despite looking like Dustbusters, I believe I read the shape was not only for aerodynamics but alluded to the side profile of a horse’s head. The removable seats with cup holders on the backs were cool, the pop-out windows were neat, the sliding door was very cool, love the built in air pump, the dash was enormous. I appreciate that my parents went for a more excitingly designed car versus the venerable caravan or town and country. I remember in the 90’s movie Ladybugs, the company car of Rodney Dangerfield was a Oldsmobile Silhouette, the most luxurious version of the car with two sliding doors that were automatic. Man I still want one. It was a real bummer to facelift the vans seeing as they were so sleek. The facelift made them look dumpy, the rounded headlights are all too wrong for that design. By the way, love your channel. It’s refreshing to have someone appreciate the less appreciated cars. Anyone can say a car is ugly or a failure, but they totally miss the point. These cars are fun and innovative and have expressive design.

As teenagers in the mid-90's, a buddy of mine and I put an old XT on the road as our first car. I remember us pointing out at the quirky interior details. My favorite being the pistol grip/joystick style shifter for the 5 speed, with a great big red fire button to activate the AWD. We blew the clutch out in short order when we decided to take it off road in the woods. Fun times!

I didn't had the Citroën BX but owned it's bigger brother the XM V6. The greatest detail is the hydropneumatic suspension the Citroëns had! You could manualy switch from comfort ride to sporty hard, it didn't lean over while driving curves and you could even adjust the cars hight. From Race car like low to off road capable high! Totally crazy!

I own a 1988 Nissan pulsar with a manual and a CA18DE engine that I love! It was my first car, and while it ran, it was brilliant. I learned how to drive manual on it(mostly from movies and video games) so that should give you an idea of how nice that transmission was, and the engine was smooth, strong and sounded great until it blew(head gasket and piston rings, the last owner beat on it pretty hard). If anyone in these comments sees this and knows of anywhere on the west coast I could repair it, let me know! But I absolutely recommend picking one of them up, even if its not the sportbak. Door handles, interior bits etc. I am fortunate enough to have family in SC so I manage to get clean (rust wise) cars out of the junkyard. After 28 years, last year, the original trans gave up the ghost so I manual swapped it using the getrag trans and associated parts from an 89 2.8. then I bought a 92 base 2.2 stick for the correct console plate, shifter etc. Overall, the car actually mechanically has been great. My mom had the XT back in the 80s. That thing was a blast to drive. It was just the standard 4-banger, but it had some serious grunt even in 4th gear! What I liked is the tilt wheel. You pulled this lever under the steering column and not only did the steering wheel raise and lower, but the pods on the side also raised and lowered...*AND* the instrument cluster inside the dash went up and down! This little manual transmission car also came with the Subaru Hill Holder clutch! It made driving a stick super easy! One problem though...they are basically disposable. There is nothing rebuildable in that thing. It's all plastic and when its exposed to all that UV, it breaks and cracks..and that engine? Yeah...all the mechanics where we lived then refused to work on it. They said it would cost more than a new car to repair it...the dreaded head gaskets. Not even 100K and it had to be towed away as junk! If you like that Pontiac van, check out the Oldsmobile Odyssey. It's the same thing but with an Olds badge!

The rocky was not a Toyota though. Daihatsu was its own company until Toyota bought them in 2016. Before that Toyota gained majority shares in 1998. Before that they were like Toyota and Subaru are now, Toyota owns less than 20% of Subaru.

@@johnjacob688 Thanks for the detailed history. When did Toyota and Daihatsu start sharing major components like engines and transmissions? How long has Daihatsu used Denso components? When did the companies start re-badging each other's cars and selling them under their own brand? Where does Hino fit into this relationship?

Being a teen/20's back then I remember most of these cars very well. I'm a Mopar guy but I always like the SVO Mustang. I'd probably go with that out of the group.

Drove a Charade 150 miles 6 days a week for few years, 3 cylinder standard transmission, extremely reliable, cheap to operate, every exhaust manifold is cracked at 02sensor & when the timing belt is neglected & breaks 35 miles from home 5pm in Bay traffic, Friday before holliday, it's scrap.

I also had a 93 Nissan 300ZX 2+2 with pearlescent white paint and T tops and a premium Bose CD stereo system that car was so rad- it handled like it was on rails! All it needed was a five speed to make it complete. It actually belong to family friends of ours and it had super low miles at a sweet deal. Years later I ran into the guy who sold us the car. He had replaced it with a Porsche and he had lamented the day he had sold it to us due to all the problems he had had with his Porsche. I never had to do one single bit of maintenance (aside from oil change) on the car while I owned it it was literally perfect.

Bit late but the Pontiac Fiero is a fiery and cheap Italian inspired sports coupe that looks amazing (both 1st gen and 1988 redesign)

I had a light blue 1985 Subaru XT base 4cyl 5spd and a bright red 1991 Chevy Beretta base 4cyl 5spd. Both were cars my parents bought me as a teenager (my 3rd and 5th cars respectively.) I loved them both, but the Subaru will always be one of my all time favorites - such a quirky little car with its pop up headlights, airplane cockpit interior, joystick gearshift, one big windshield wiper…

I always wanted a Beretta, Isuzu Impulse, Probe or Fiero GT, but my college car back in the 90's was a hand me down Cavalier station wagon with manual transmission. Not as fancy looking as the Cimarron, but practical and actually reliable for a GM POS. Today I still daily a 97 Honda Prelude SH because she's still fun in the corners and it refuses to die even after 20+ yrs of spirited driving and very little maintenance.

I owned a 1986 Nissan pulsar nx, it was silver and black, It didn’t have the sport back, had a sunroof though. In sept of 1998 a piston blew through the engine, had 120 ish thousand miles on it. That car got me through all of high school and college.

I remember that Motor Week described the "dustbuster" GM minivans as being like monorails. And I realized they were right. I tried to win the '93 Oldsmobile Silhouette in a contest and I lost. This was the first one to have the automatic sliding rear door before the nose-job of 1994.

I grew up in the 80's and that Subaru XT6 was my dream car...it was so cool and the optional futuristic dashboard gauge was soooo cool! I ended up buying a 1987 Nissan Sentra XR Sport Coupe.

Growing up, as a teen my mother had a 1988 BERETTA GT, 5 speed. Forget the liter engine it had but it was the better one you couldve got. When she finally sold it in 2002, it had only 67K miles. Bought it brand new for 7,000. Reason why so cheap, her brother was the finance manager for Clearwater Chevy. Oh, thats the car I learned how to drive stick on. Good times!!!

My best friend in high school had a 1990 GTX with the quad 4 in maroon. Another friend had a 1990 GTU pace car in teal green. Seems like everyone had a Beretta in the early 90s, now they are pretty much extinct.
