funny story: my parents actually watched this in theaters when it first came out and they told me they were so scared they wanted to leave, but the theater was so dark that they couldn’t see where the exit was (and they were too petrified to even move anyway) so they sat and watched the whole thing scared out of their minds and to this day refuse to rewatch it 😂

To give you more context about the themes in this movie it's helpful to know Clive Barker was a big fan of the fetish community. That's why the cenobites are all wearing black leather and talking about mixing pain and pleasure. "We are explorers in the further regions of experience" is a very telling line.

Almost every horror movie has lighthearted moments, or a funny line here or there, to ease up the tension... But Hellraiser does not. It is just pitch f**king black throughout! Great video! So glad I found it. Sixteen-year-old me snuck into _Hellraiser_ on opening night back in '87. The audience - myself included - were utterly blown away by the imagery and violence. There really was nothing like it at the time. Literally, when the credits rolled, you could hear fifty people *finally* let out their held breath, all at once.

Something that set this movie apart from pretty much everything coming out of Hollywood at the time was the fact that the Cenobites (Pinhead in particular) were far more 'intellectual' than other movie monsters, who all tended to follow one of two formulas: they were either wisecracking smartasses like Freddy Krüeger for example, or mute killing machines like Jason Vorhees. As a matter of fact the production company wanted Barker to make Pinhead more like Freddy Krüeger, but he absolutely refused. Another thing perhaps is the fact that Frank and Julia were the real antagonists, rather than the Cenobites filling that function - which likely had been the case if Hollywood had their way. Sadly they did from the third movie onwards... Hellraiser 5 through 8 weren't actually Hellraiser movies originally. The studio simply acquired some scripts for cheap and rewrote them to include Pinhead. They had to produce a Hellraiser movie every few years in order to keep the license. The 9th movie was written specifically for that purpose. They outright told the director and script writer that they didn't care about the quality of the movie as long as they had something they could release before the deadline, and they shot that crapfest in just a couple of weeks iirc. It's some of the worst crap I've seen, so bad that I haven't bothered to watch the 10th movie, despite hearing that it's relatively decent.

He traveled abroad afterward, wandering about aimlessly searching for ways in which to bury his trauma until at last he came upon the box.

I was about 12 when I saw this movie for the first time, 28 years ago and have loved this and the first sequel (don’t watch III and beyond) ever since. Another great reaction video. At times I’m a bit envious you’re getting to enjoy this classics for first time been a while for me since I saw a classic for the first time.

First off-SORRY I WROTE SO MUCH. But Hellraiser is of my all time favorite films (like the Exorcist, I also watched this movie alone the first time I ever saw it. I was 11; YEP. My cousin had the VHS tape and I watched it over there alone in his room-without my parents knowledge 😂 and it terrified me. That resurrection scene using practical effects was truly incredible, original and revolutionary in its time. There was nothing remotely like it when this came out. It was extremely scary in its time. And this film at its core is a depraved, super horrific version of extreme S&M, mixed with murder, monsters from hell (they are actually called cenobites. And the lead guy is Pinhead-he’s a legendary character now but not then-then he was an underground character that belonged to us the fans), lots of blood and the concept that in hell, pain is the only pleasure. And sometimes hell comes looking for you to tear your soul apart. So be weary of boxes with puzzles🤣This film also gives me a lot of feels of nostalgia-my friends and I all knew the lines from this one and the second one, as well as Evil Dead 1,2 and 3 (because they have incredible, endlessly quotable dialogue that is a fun as hell to say) and we’d interject them (the Jesus Wept line was everything😂) at appropriate -and inappropriate 😉- moments and no one other than our circle would know what we were talking about, and it was like our secret knowledge-kind of like people who quote Star Wars to each other... but way cooler😂 and way more obscure. Hellraiser is based on a novella by one of my all time favorite authors, the legendary Clive Barker. Clive Barker in my opinion is one of, if not thee, greatest, most original, imaginative, incredibly detailed and brilliant fantasy horror writers of all time. If you’ve never read his novels and story collections, you’ve been missing out big time. Check out the Books Of Blood Vol. 1&2, Imajica, and The Great And Secret Show, and go from there. Hellraiser is based on Barker’s novella “The Hellbound Heart”. But he’s written a lot of novels and collections. He’s a very prolific writer. As well as being an incredible artist that does his own illustrations in his novels, anthologies and short stories. I love Stephen King’s novels as you do, and King is a master in his own right. But Clive Barker is truly on a whole other level. I’ve yet to find a horror writer his equal. Once one reads his works, he becomes the gold standard horror author all others are held up to 😉 start by reading The Books Of Blood. And be prepared to be blown away. One note- the cenobites and the box didn’t take you to either heaven or hell. The box didn’t open heaven at all. The premise is that for some people, hell and pain IS THEIR HEAVEN. Seekers of pain for pleasure, for those who can’t get enough on earth and want to go further, have the ultimate pleasure. But then, they take your soul and torture you forever. Until there is no pleasure left, only the pain. Which was more than Frank bargained for. This movie and its premise is original and unexpected, it pushes boundaries (even today) as it touches on a lot of taboo themes and subjects with total abandon. Remember- this is 1987! This movie is decades ahead of its time. That’s a credit to the genius of Clive Barker. He finds the beauty in the horrific. He finds the art in the macabre. There is a kind of elevated poetry to his written works, where he uses elegant language and beautiful prose to describe horrific things. And he always finds the beauty in the monsters and the horror in mankind. He’s brilliant. He touches on themes no one else would touch. And no one in the genre is as original as he is. So, if you take anything from this movie, it should be IF YOU SEE A METAL PUZZLE BOX, LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE 😂

In 1985 Stephen King said Clive Barker was “the future of horror.” I saw Hellraiser when it came out in theaters. A group of us drove from our little remote Indian reservation to the city to see it - had to stay in a momo. Nobody slept that night!

Yes! Nightmare on Elm Street and Hellraiser are my two favorite horror movies of all times. Clive Barker, the director of Hellraiser wrote the book it is based on called "The Hellbound Heart". He is a brilliant horror writer and a very talented painter too. And he also wrote Candyman, another horror gem I hope you watch soon. I love your reactions by the way. Great reaction! I also suggest the following: The Exorcist, The Omen, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Terminator (technically it's scifi action but has alot of horror tropes in it), Predator, Alien, Aliens, Poltergeist, Carrie, Cujo, Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Child's Play, Gremlins, The Thing... Man I watched way too many horror movies growing up. Kinda explains alot 🤪

If you're going to watch Hellbound: Hellraiser Ii, make sure you see the unrated version. The R-rated version is heaviiy cut. Part 1 and Part 2 (mostly) are Britisch. They fit together very well. With part 3 the series became weaker step by step (and Ameeican). Btw, Ashley Laurence was 17 filming Hellraiser. And Christopher Young's score ist epic.

This movie is one of the main reasons why my father hates horror movies. He was never a big fan of them but he would still watch them with us. When he saw this movie his exact words were "Normal people do not make movies like this." I love Clive Barker and Doug Bradley is the only Pinhead for me. Did you know there is a first-person shooter, horror survival video game designed by Clive Barker? It is called "Jericho" and it was one of my favorite horror experiences. Nothing special to write home about just classic Clive Barker horror and suspense.
