Thanks for this video. I stumbled upon the original Epic Comics as a young horror fiend at a flea market and was not prepared for them. They kind of blew my mind. Managed to read a couple more that my requisite "cool uncle" (a huge Barker fan) had as well. Almost forgot about these, but grabbed a couple of the Boom individual reprints for cheap at a local comic shop and now I'm hooked again. Really interesting stuff, and what makes it work is what you point out, that it abstracts the "puzzle and obsession leads to Hell" concept into some unexpected and disturbing directions.

Alpha Rookie apparently the scene would have Freddy and Jason fighting longer than the film we gotten. They somehow end up in Hell, when they carried on beating each other, before chains comes out of nowhere, holding but Freddy and Jason. Pinhead would then appear and the film would with him saying "What seems to be the problem, gentlemen?"

There are even a couple of good stories that aren't in any of the collections. There's a story I really like by Ted McKeever that you can only read if you have the issues.
@CybershamanX7 жыл бұрын
+Alpha Rookie OK. It's firmly settled now. I MUST own these again! ;) Oh, hey! I think it would be cool if someone did a Hellraiser story about a comic nerd who was obsessed with this one "forbidden" comic series. Like, maybe the publisher would have attempted to try and literally eradicate all copies of it from the world? So, then this guy would be on this unholy quest to complete his collection and, hey, maybe he just might have to murder a few people along the way to achieve his goal, right? I mean, the comic is worth THAT much to this guy. And of course, at the end it would turn out that the very act of collecting them all would in and of itself be, you guessed it, a Lament Configuration and also the guy who was helping him track all the issues down would turn out to be a cenobite! Ho, man... This stuff just writes itself! And it would certainly have a very Creepshow/Tales from the Crypt kind of vibe to it... :P Bonus fact: "cenobite" actually refers to "a member of a religious order living in a convent or community". I love it when writers appropriate an existing word and turn it into something sinister. I mean, how many times have you heard someone use "cenobite" in a sentence to refer to anything BUT Pinhead and his ilk? ;) Anyway, while I only read his Books of Blood series, I always loved how Barker would use religious terms to describe many of his evil entities and situations. Great stuff! :) Edit: I actually had the issue I think you are referring to! Oh, MAAAAAN!!! :/ comicvine.gamespot.com/clive-barkers-hellraiser-1-the-canons-of-pain-dead/4000-144429/

I did read those and I honestly didn't care that much for them. If you like the 90s Hellraiser comics, I highly recommend trying to track down Tapping the Vein. It was a series of adaptations of Clive Barker short stories published by Elcipse. There are stories with art by P Craig Russell, Klaus Janson, and John Bolton. Very cool.
@FelisDestructicus8 жыл бұрын
Alpha Rookie If I'm not mistaken, isn't that a series of novels? Most of my comics were hand-me-downs, but I did read The Hellbound Heart, and some of the Books of Blood. I didn't much care for Nightbreed, the film, but I did like the comics. Rawhead Rex needs to be remade without a cheesy guy in a suit, I say. Edit: I can't read, apparently. You were saying they were, adaptations of novels. Gotcha, I'll look into that but I don't know where to find vintage comics without shopping online, these days.
@AlphaRookie8 жыл бұрын
Yes, they were adaptations of the stories in Books of Blood. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapping_the_Vein_(comics)
@FelisDestructicus8 жыл бұрын
Alpha Rookie Yeah, I realize I misread what you had written. lol I'm totally down for that. I also want to mention you're a total masochist for marathoning the Hellraiser films. I love the first two, and only cenobite designs from the rest. If they ever get around to actually coming out with that new film, I do hope they give it a fresh angle. Hooks, chains, and blood, are the bread and butter of the series, but there are so many more imaginative ways to explore the self-imposed damnation of the soul.
@AlphaRookie8 жыл бұрын
Agreed! We talk about that quite a bit on our podcast. I think Hellraiser should be either treated as an anthology style vehicle or it needs to expand upon its own universe. It's so stuck in its own pinhead rut. So it goes.

So I enjoyed your video. The reference to session nine and reverence for Pinhead as king dick among the early horror icons. Additionally your refused the temptation to review any of the og movies focusing instead on recommendations, well done sir. Questions: did you in fact sell your Hellraiser comic collection? If you have the charter(?) collections why not send em my way? Is nine movies in a series even that many anymore? i.e. Marvel multiverse and the what.. 12 star wars abominations? The cover of at least one of the comics or collections clearly show Pinhead. Is his character included at all in the series stories? Thanks And so if you like Clive Barker I highly recommend a short novel titled THE Thief of ALWAYS.

I watched this video a while ago and it really made me wanna track down the actual epic comics but, like you said, it would be pretty painstaking. They're on eBay (which I'm Leary of most of the time) but, $2.95-5.00 plus 3.99 shipping per book from individual sellers = my head exploding. Which leads to my question, How comprehensive are the Collected Best volumes from checker print?
@AlphaRookie8 жыл бұрын
+Jimbo Jones pretty damn comprehensive. There's a story by Ted McKeever that's missing but other than that everything I think is worth reading is in there. Cenobites do actually take people against their will in the comics. The story about the guy who once made a deal for them to take his little brother instead of himself, comes to mind (who attempts to do the same with his infant son, out of sheer desperation). Also, the story about the guy who brings them fresh victims, in the hope of one day beings seen as worthy enough to join them (the last such offering being a woman who later returns as a multi-limbed horror). There is actually a PDF of the guidelines which can be searched for, which were sent to prospective writers of the series. It's well worth reading. In it, the point is made that violence and gore are quite acceptable, but should never be seen as the story, itself. This seems to be a large part of why many of the stories were so creative, because they were using the themes of horror, corruption and desire to propel an already existing story along, rather than just being a race to show the most shocking images for the sake of it.

Always been a huge fan of Hellraiser 1 &2. But Epic comics back then, man! They were good and creepy. It was about dark and twisted passion. We saw different cenobites with their own looks within their own stories. It went deeper into a very complex mythology which was never about monsters running after you but about the ones you summoned, voluntarily or not. Death was never an option with the cenobites, they kept you forever. And that my friends, is terrifying.

Not sure about the connection to Heavy Metal - save that they took advantage of the weakening of the code and demand for "Direct Market". The "Code" still existed but even grocery stores sometimes had Image comics (even Violator) due to demand and people caring more about where the President put his slick willie. But IMO the Hellraiser comics were what E.C. comics could have been if not for Dr Wertham. I always hate TPBs - they cut out letters, ads for other stuff - lots of the time capsule stuff finding an original is.
@doublep19805 жыл бұрын
The majority of the Hellraiser movies were only made in order for Harvey Weinstein's studio to not lose the rights,after he aquired them in the late 90's. They just took a script for a completely unrelated horror movie,put Pinhead and the Lament configuration in it for 2 minutes,slapped Pinhead's pic on the dvd-cover and that was it. The director of the french ''Martyrs'' movie wanted to make a proper reboot of Hellraiser but he quit after Weinstein started his usual interference.

you almost can't consider part 9 as one of the series. it doesn't have Doug Bradley in it as pinhead and the studio made it as quickly and cheaply as possible in order to not lose the rights to the property
