holy cow, I watched this film about 30 years ago and all i remember was this song, and it's stuck in my head ever since. It's probably the catchiest song I've ever heard in my life.

I knew a woman who'd performed in a specialty dance number in the original Broadway "Hellzapoppin'" show. She and others had had to hustle to the theater to do it between shows at the nightclub where they were working nightly.

I find it fascinating how short this Conga Fad was in American pop culture... 1941, and that's pretty much it! A flash in the pop-fad pan! I love it though! It's so simple, and it does sooooo much for me! 1-2-3, ________! The other fad at that time is the Boogie Woogie... more fun!

The Rhumba also appears in "Ball Of Fire", another very popular movie from the same year that featured Gary Cooper & Barbara Stanwyck; same movie also had Gene Krupa's "Drum Boogie"!

@gregoryagogo Hey, thanks for your comment and for posting this exceptional video. Before last night, I only knew the word, hellzapoppin' and had never heard of the film, much less seen it. It really made my day. As for smoking and clear-headedness, i dunno. Some thrive on that haze for creativity. I don't, however, number myself in that group. But the goofiness certainly reminded me of some fun times when there was a little stuff around. Gottta be clear for the dancing though!! And what dancin!

Frank Skinner, the gentleman who wrote the music score to this picture started out as an arranger of stock orchestrarions for dance bands in the 1920's. "Yes sir that's my baby" was one--there are many others spanning the early 20's to the mid 30's.

Yeah, maybe you're right. I guess it was Conga-like. Anyway it was fun. You should check it out. Cute male dancers in it too, a bonus.

Felt like another conga fix, so I always know where to go...Do you remember a conga-type song from Nancy Goes to Rio? I think it might even have been the title song. Can't find it. I'll bet you can!

That was fun. Another one I've never seen before! I actually remember seeing a photo in a Life magazine retrospective of a bunch of club goers doing the conga in either `1939 or 1936. As usual, it was probably popular for awhile before it made its way into movies. Do you remember an earlier conga scene in movies before 1940? You seem to be the expert on this subject. (smile)
