This is me onboard a 1974 Honda CR250M racing the AHRMA (American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association) national MX at Tulare Cycle Park in Tulare, CA in November 2004. This is the 2nd moto of the Sportsman 250 Intermediate class. At the end of the video, I have to hand the bike to my friend and run for the line, because my Husqvarna 450 is waiting for the Sportsman 500 race! The sound only comes from the left channel on this video, and I'm not sure how to fix it.

I to am in AZ and I'm thinking of getting back into riding after many years being out of it. Thinking of getting a bike within bout a year. Will race here in AZ, before moving to the NW. AGain, that was lots O fun to watch, thanks!

I don't know how you guys manage on those antiques... My hats off to you, I had a hard time on my old '99 yz 125 tryin to hit anything bigger than 60 feet; I can't imagine how it is on a '74

Great Video... yeah whats interesting to me is how smooth the track is compared to the damage done by bikes of today...that sound of a 2 stroke motor brings back some memories..ex yz air cooled 250 plodder..

Absolutely. I also race a '76 RM370. As long as you don't go too insane, a vintage bike is cool for most medium doubles and tabletops.

Good ear you have. This was the first race on a fresh motor, so we left the pilot one size big and the jet needle one clip rich to help it break in. Thanks for the reply !

Thanks for the comment. The 74 Honda especially was known for pushing really bad, and this bike does too. We have the forks pushed way up in the triple clamps, extra long shocks, a Michelin S12 tire, and I sit up on the gas tank to turn it, and it still doesn't turn in as good as a Bultaco or Maico!

Some people don't like them, but the Circle F pipe we run widens the powerband and gives you a ton more torque while sacrificing just a tiny bit of top end.

Thanks for watching! Actually, some of the tracks we race on get pretty torn up. I think sometimes the limited travel bikes tear up the tracks worse than mondern bikes! However, the folks who run Tulare take really good care of the track. Before every set of motos, they drag it with a tractor then run a rotary harrow over it so it's perfect for racing!

Thanks. I had a feeling it might be an issue. I still haven't looked into it heavily. I'm guessing it would get stuck in like EVO open. I thought my first bike getting back into riding was going to be a twin shocker, but I actually wound up with an 85 Husky 500XC project. So, just slowly building that at the moment. Guess I'll probably buy a bike for tracks, and vintage a little further out. What does something like the mid 70's KX400, or even a RM370/400 run in?

Usually about 11-12. If you have at least one rimlock, it should be OK. I use a Michelin S12 or M12 on the back. I use 9-10 in the front S12. You want to run the back a couple pounds higher than the front so it's easier to light it up and keep it in the powerband.

Have I seen you at the Gene Romero/Eddie Mulder flat tracks on a XR500? I've got a '79 XR250, and I even have the 23" front wheel!

Not in AHRMA. There is post vintage but I believe there are rules against using a 250 chassis in a 500 class. If the chassis are similar you might be able to pass it off as a 480 but I doubt it.

Is there a class where a guy could race a custom bike? Such as, I'm thinking of trying to build a 79' CR250, but with a 480 engine swapped in. And I just turned the big 4 O this year. Vintage bike, vintage body, open class perhaps?
