9:59 Its really cool to see old diving gear and new SCUBA gear side by side. Human curiosity has always triumphed, even in the 1800's they were able to create a working diving suit just to study and explore the oceans and lakes, as well as build in them. Someone should defiitley make a cool painting out of an early diver standing next to a modern diver. Plus its pretty cool to see the origin of the bigger boot

That's crazy that they still used this up until the 80's, you'd really thought they'd of come up with something better way before then. It's an iconic suit, though.
@larrywhited30703 жыл бұрын
The dive school I attended in 1971 still used the old Mark V for training, but in the offshore oilfield business there was very limited use of this dated equipment even at that time. Almost all construction diving was (is) "surface supplied" rather than scuba (self-contained), so this still does present the limitations of being hose-connected. However, this is by far safer and preferred for a host of reasons, and still is for working divers.

Brings back fond memories of my early days diving salvage with my father. You missed out quite a few 'tricks' but I guess the video can only be so long. We wore thick woollens under the suit to help maintain body temperature as the water would leech all our warmth. The air supply pumps were still manual hand pumps, 1 pump per diver, 4 men per pump. To call us up for lunch the hot aromatic food was held near the air intake, the food smell would have us at the surface in no time. Similarly, the men turning the pump handles were rotated regularly as their sweaty B.O. would also be pumped down to us. I hope you were briefed never to bend over as your suit was not laced to your body, but you were not deep enough for it to be life-threatening. Your air exhaust is at the top so if you bend over your exhaust moves to the bottom and your suit inflates and you surface fast, feet first. Lethal if you are at depth. Always check your suit for residents before you get dressed, nothing worse than having a cockroach or mouse appear in your helmet when you are under. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Brings back some nice memories : I tried helmet diving, a few months after getting my OWD in 1990. The rig was different though : a 12 bolts Piel. Any scuba diver should try helmet diving, it makes you love your scuba gear even more. When they put the hat on, you really wish you had taken a can opener with you. When you climb back on the ladder, it's like having the Empire State building on your shoulders. Great fun though. Respect to all past hard divers who made a living out of it.

Navy radioed him saying," this is a test of stress, gets yourself a out or die! An they clicked off channel! He worked his hand up through mud muck to helmet an shut down exhaust port of air intake, increasing air pressure inside suit to lift him from being buried, but he had to readjust air intake to not lift him too fast to surface once he escaped bottom muck! If you tell anyone , you will be disqualified! "Go Navy"! Navy picked 6 best men out of over 200 an dad was one of six special forces joined with other groups to become Navy Seals! Cool! @seikibrian86416 жыл бұрын
Ftown Originals "...say your at 20 metres you cant just ascend you can get the bends" It depends on how long you were down, and what you were breathing. 20 meters isn't considered a deep dive, and if your bottom time is, for example, 72 minutes on 36% Nitrox you could make a direct ascent with no decompression stops. A direct ascent could be made safely at a rate of 30 feet per minute, so from 20 meters it would only take a little over two minutes to get to the surface. If you stayed down for 90 minutes you'd need a safety stop at 5 meters, but that only needs to be 3 to 5 minutes so still less than 10 minutes to ascend. (By the way, the same decompression tables apply to both scuba and surface-supplied diving. The water pressure and nitrogen absorption rates don't know what apparatus you're using.)

I always called it "hard hat" diving. I was at a water park in Mexico where I did a hard hat dive for tourists. The water was warm so we just wore swim suits and neoprene booties to protect our feet. We climbed down a ladder, and when the water was up to our necks they lowered a plastic hard hat over our heads so it rested on our shoulders, and then we continued down the ladder to the bottom, which I'd guess was 15 feet. The helmets had huge windows so we could see all around. Not as much fun as scuba diving but I wasn't certified for scuba yet, so it was fun. And unlike the murky lake in the video, this was the Caribbean so the visibility was great.

The suit and helmet are water tight. If water is getting in,your dying
@larrywhited30703 жыл бұрын
Having trained in the Mark V in 1971 before becoming a commercial diver, allow me a few comments. With this equipment (as opposed to equipment that now simply has a neck dam seal) the canvas suit (as opposed to a wetsuit or drysuit) can inflate if the helmet exhaust valve is closed. It is possible to inflate the suit to enough positive buoyancy that you then rise to the surface. In fact, in extreme uncontrolled cases the suit can inflate to the extent that your arms are forced straight out to the sides, thus preventing you from accessing the intake & exhaust valves on the helmet. You then shoot to the surface in an uncontrolled ascent. This can be deadly when it comes to decompression and embolism issues. If you turn upside down (which is a major no-no), and assuming that the suit has no major tears, leaks, etc. that could result in helmet flooding, then the air will fill the leg portions of the suit while the "squeeze" factor affects the lower section where your chest and head now are. Adding any air to counter this then inflates the "higher" leg and lower body sections. You then become positively buoyant and your accelerating (and potentially deadly) ascent to the surface begins. Seconds are critical when these kinds of situations develop. Otherwise, water can flood the suit completely (you get mighty heavy), but as long as your helmet does not flood the air under pressure prevents the water from rising enough to drown you.....that is, if you stay upright.

With each step, more of the gear is out of the water. So it gets heavier with every step up the ladder.

BlueWorldTV bit you said that each step is harder than the next implying that as more gear comes out it gets easier to walk. That's what you said atleast

+ BlueWorldTV "With each step, more of the gear is out of the water. So it gets heavier with every step up the ladder." Yes, so Tom Sharpe is correct: what you should have said was "Each step is harder than the LAST" or "Each step is harder than THE ONE BEFORE," not "each step is harder than the NEXT."

Hi guys, I'm the camera man for the show. We're in Abu Dhabi filming educational programming and was taking some time to look at the comments of the BlueWorldTV KZbin page when I stumbled on this. I had to explain to Jonathan why the phrase was incorrect and we laughed really hard at how no one caught the mistake. Good looking out and we'll do better in the past...
