@heykeiffers6684Ай бұрын
Yeah but hardly anyone wears them! They’re so good, I wonder why
@heilmodrhinnheimski21 күн бұрын
@@heykeiffers6684Several reasons. In buhurt, helmets tend to be pretty huge to allow for sufficient padding. Historical sallets are quite light and fit around the head rather closely, leaving little room for the overpadding required in buhurt. Furthermore, sallets do not by themselves cover the face, which is required by the rules. They were most often worn with a bevor, however this is considered unsafe in buhurt since the two are not attached and therefore might separate, leaving a dangerous opening in a bout and any strike directly to the bevor will press it into your throat. The one solution I have seen is to make a close helmet style sallet and bevor, where the bevor is attached and rotates on the same hinge as the sallet’s visor. However, this is a pretty complicated construction and will probably be a lot more expensive to make than most other type of helmets and you would still have to make the sallet ridiculously oversized to fit in enough padding and then you kinda loose the look of them.

i had 14ga sugarloaf forged on a 1420s tapered basinet,(formerly klappervisor) i went to local blacksmith to have some more holes drille dout but in a nice way, he managed to add 4 more crosses type holes plus 3? simple circle holes. he inlaid brass strips added metal flap around lower jaw maiables. best 250 bucks spent. and it stayed perfectly within rules and specs permitted. I could breathe way way easier and i can see peoples feet. some people like sallets after borrowing both lobstertail sallet and bevor for test. but i found fatal flaw there near bevor and visor-down area where a weapon could slip in. so this guy had a V shaped iron bar added to his curiass after research. the french had this problem when they faced archers. The arrows would bounce off breastplate, and slip right between bevor and visor-down. scalp you. so his another solution was to flare out the bevor into a lazy C shaped around the rim added holes across his bevor ear to ear. He then added leather padding, stitched it in. it provided a decent seal between visor and bevor . Funny enough it also blocked out sun glare reflecting off peoples sabatons into his eyes through that gap. we sat down and talked about this. " I wonder they had similar issues back in 1480s" i said "probably but back then peoples feet was covered in mud and horse crap so".

As far as helmets go I know that some fighters have their own unique style of helmet like Paul Friedel, are you allowed to have your own style of helmet as long as it follows the specific time era and region that the rest of your armor follows?
@BeatonArmaments3 жыл бұрын
That really depends on what fighting league you are with. Some are more lenient on being 100% accurate. But if you are with HMB, you have to have it almost exact as the source.

@@BeatonArmaments Thanks for the help really appreciate it thanks for giving me a better understanding 😁👍
@volix3333 жыл бұрын
Paul Friedel uses a real historical helmet, even if it doesn't come in the right metal tint. His helmet is very eastern and you see the Cumans wear them along with lamellar style armor. I think they take small liberties with the armor, metal tint, metal type, metal thickness, and small modifications like more holes, face cages and stuff. As for making a helmet that "could've" existed alongside it, I don't know the answer to that. If I had 16th century German armor; cuirass, gauntlets etc. everything but the helmet, and I wanted a helmet that looks like a horse or dragon that would be wicked, but historically it would likely end up considered parade armor, which was never used in battle, battle armor is pretty standard and trendy sadly. I think it would be really fun to mess around in my own custom helmet, and getting to test different designs made in modern times, wouldn't that be interesting?

What about a big *ss sallette with build in paddening, a mail coif and a thick padded coif underneat that aswell. Also I got a question that more important if I would like to start getting into buhurt with less extreem levels of armor then full plate, but with full body padding and a more segmented level of plate. To be precies first layer is full body fabric armor, for the arms jackchains with at the upperarm mail sleeves a extra ellebow cup to protect the joints and gauntlets ofcourse, for the head I already told you what, for the body a brigendine over the gambeson, and for the legs a mail skirt, grieves for the lower legs and knee cups to protect my joints. Is this type of light weight armor exeptable? Everything that's steel will be over 2mm in thickness and the padding is pretty thick aswell. When I join I would like to take advantages of the fact that I'm a natural lichtweight that's overly strong for his weight class by having lighter armor that will allow me to be more mobile aswell. When I see people in buhurt it mostly seems to me that the rely a lot on raw strenght and the protection of there armor then anything else. I'm the type of guy that can take beating anyway sow I would like to rely on my pain resistance, speed and skill instead.
@saltlakecitycrusaders98112 жыл бұрын
You can wear whatever you like as long as it fits into the basic rules. The ones we use can be found at Acwknights.com As long as you meet minimum thicknesses for each described part of armor you can wear whatever you want on the outside of your body
@joeyvanhaperen77152 жыл бұрын
@@saltlakecitycrusaders9811 Jezus man that's one insane list of rules. 😅 Also I'm not that sure about the thickness of each part exactly. I know everything should be on or over 1,2mm in thickness at the very least except maby my grieves and under that I'm bassicly wearing fully body padding. Full body padding as in even the leather gloves inside of my gauntlets are padded, sow yeh. 😅 I'm not sure how thick steel is exactly but the intire armour ended up weighing around 27 kilo's, sow yeh I'm pretty sure that should be plenty thick right? I ended up with a cuiras instead of brigedine and a mailskirt aswell though to armor up my center line better, but still 27 kilo's is already pretty heavy for a buhurt armor right? sow that means it must be thick enough.... 😅

If you are wearing an older great helm, would one wear it as they did in medieval times, so one layer of gambeson, mail, and I forget the third type of coif, a smaller helm, and the great helm goes over it?

You can certainly do that, but weight is a big consideration in the sport and so generally we just have modern padding and a comfort layer within the helmets.

@saltlakecitycrusaders981111 ай бұрын
Most helmets our team members get are custom made to fit their heads and the blacksmith will give instructions on measuring your head in different dimensions to get a good fit. We additionally recommend adding 1-3 cm to the circumference to give space for additional padding. Your best bet is to hook up with a local team to get guidance from them on where to order from and see who they trust.

Most armor is custom made by blacksmiths in Europe, though there are some North American makers. If you want to get into armored combat then the best thing you can do is hook up with a team local to you and get their guidance. They aren't too much of a pain to import, it just takes a while and shipping can get a little pricey.

I ask because I have seen Great Helms with Italian plate armor and anyone would know thats not possible. Would anyone stop me from wearing my tilting gear? I have one of those armets that close in three places, and the pieces that go with it all existed, they just weren't all common finds. For example, my right shoulder has a besagew with just a guardbrace and spaulder while my left shoulder has a large pauldron covering the armpit so I can lift right right arm all the way up but my left is a little more restricted. I ask because being restricted on the basis of historicity would give me a lot of grief based on time and money, and I havent put it all together yet so if I could confirm that.

From the very start of the video : Real armor : yep. Real athletes : no doubt. Real weapons : Nnnope. Clearly not. They may be steel simulators instead of nylon simulators, but simulators nonetheless.

We can assure you any normal strike from the weapons we use would kill or maim an unarmored person in a single blow. Sharp edges do not define whether something is real.
