It's frustrating when this happens, but it does sometimes. This can also happen if your trimmer line is getting too old and brittle. They just break off. You can get new string here: amzn.to/3tSd6kN

Good video, I was trying to turn the bump knob the wrong way. I actually went out to home depot and bought another Ryobi Expand-it trimmer yesterday and then found your video this morning. fixed my old trimmer. The new trimmer has the updated design so I kept it. If the old one gives me anymore trouble, I'll relegate it to the tiller and sidewalk trimmer attachments. Ryobi does a great job on the tools they make, but the small owners manuals are hard to read for me anyways. Should be full size like other tool manuals.

This is EXACTLY what happened to me today. Even went to store and got new string. Went home and tried to string it, “Nope. Won’t go thru…oh, wait, there’s string in it still?!” 😂 But now can’t get the red thing off, won’t turn either direction. 😭. Guess I’ll try channel locks wrapped with a rag or something. 🤷‍♂️ Thanks, though, the exact, perfect video I needed. Appreciate it.

Good video. I viewed mostly to verify that I was turning the red nut the right way to take it off. I was but the thing seemed to be welded on there. Never had it off before. It was a bear to get that thing unscrewed. Required straps and pliers. I was amazed you got yours off so easily.

Couldn't of made it without this one. A friend just gave me the Wacker because he was de cluttering the garage, no manual. It's starting to get dark and I've got a baby football field yard with thigh high recalcitrant weeds. Can't turn the red thing, spool is just moving about a fly's foot in either direction all l have is a small pair of pliers and what little grip l can get I'm going the wrong way. Started prying the spool off with a flathead screwdriver, sun going down quick. I paid attention to that Lil voice right before l broke the spool and went straight to Google University. Your video was the game changer. Wethanksya.

Thank you. At last I found the answer I was looking for and I was afraid I will have to take the head apart on my new gas trimmer. However it looks like you have an older trimmer where you probably have a lot of screw type parts. I have to squeeze the tabs on both sides of the head to get mine apart. Anymore equipment is made with as many parts as it can that will snap together. So now I know what I'm getting into. Great video and very informative.

You will have to use some channel lock pliers to unscrew it and pull the red button away from the head when you are doing it. The bolt in the red button needs to grab. That is what I do when its on too tight and it usually comes off with pliers. Hope that helps.

I am not 100% sure, but sometimes the bolt inside the red piece does not want set right in the red piece. Try getting some needle nose pliers and put them between the red piece and the spool to make the head tight then try taking it off again. I think the clicking is the bolt slipping in the red piece.

Nice video with detailed instructions. Have a question regarding bump head. Can you share the detailed info as I need to get a new one? Thanks.

I have a Ryobi cordless edger/string trimmer that used pre-wound rolls. I've just used 2-3 rolls from one pack (the trimmer is new to me) and my string is cutting short because it seems to be glued inside. I have to remove my roll, take a knife or something to release the end of the string from the roll, and replace the roll. Like, several times per job. If the next pack of rolls doesn't work better, I'm about to sell it...... No bueno.

I don't like the trigger advance either, I let go of the trigger too much and burn through rolls of string due to excess being released.

Check out this video I made: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4mlen9tesxnb7M. You don't have to buy the spools. I actually recommend you string them yourself because its faster and you don't get those issues.

I do agree on that. I like the bump style better, but you get use to this style after a while and get a hang of it.

Just pull out the string and reload it that is faster than messing with the spool and trying to put it back in already loaded. :)

You are right. If you can get to the string in the head without taking it apart, that would work and should be easier. I did the long way to make sure whoever is watching would know how to do it that way, but you are very right. Some needle nose pliers should get to where you need to be. Thanks.

The bolt was NOT reverse threaded. It was regular threads and caused people to tighten rather than loosen the bolt. I shapped it trying to take it off using reverse thread instructions.

Weird. Mine have always been reverse threads. What model do you have?

I had this happen to me, only thing is that I have tried every thing to get the red nut off and it won’t break loose
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch 11 ай бұрын
Yeah, that can be an issue. I've had that issue on trimmers in the past. Sometimes I break them off. You might want to look at replacement heads that do not have that red bump knob like this amzn.to/3PzpJiK or this amzn.to/3ZiJOxh.

It appears I have the same head that you have on yours, but I cannot for the life of me twist the bump head off. It won’t come off. It’s really really tight and I’m just wondering what I can do to get the bump head off.

I have the 40v expanse it I can’t figure out how to open the spool. Mine isn’t red and doesn’t unscrew it’s green and just spins. Mine has a lock and unlock arrow on the side of the spool but I can’t make it budge. Any tips?

Yeah, I think they went with new head types. I bought a Ridgid trimmer and it has a head like that. My Ridgid still lets me run it through to string it as long as there is not any line in it already. The lock part is a twist off but it is on there pretty tight. Takes some work to get it off.

So if turning the bump head does not remove it, What Then? I have tried pb-blaster, kroil and pliers and notrhing wants to break the bolt free. I just got this carb cleaned and all that, it runs and I want to use it!
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch 2 жыл бұрын
Make sure you are turning it the right direction. That is tricky since it turns backwards. If you are and it still won't come of, you may want to try turning the whole head to see if you can remove it that way.

What if it's not just finger tight? I used a plier but still couldn't get it off, maybe the plastic is separated from the bolt...if I cut the plastic off, would the screw bolt can still hold the retainer? Thanks!
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch Жыл бұрын
The plastic could be stripped, but it also could be not getting a good grip on the bolt head. Are you able to push it in and twist it? Remember it spins opposite.
@ehlai1676
@ehlai1676 Жыл бұрын
@@SeidelRanch It's not getting grip on the bolt head, as it the retainer can be rotated but not coming out. Can also push it in but can't rotate with head though...I may have to try to cut the plastic off the bolt head then ... I got it as a used one from someone so i don't know what it went wrong
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch Жыл бұрын
@@ehlai1676 It might be easier to just lock the spindle and remove the whole head. Replacement heads are not that expensive and may be worth it in this case.
