You should check out Dracula Daily. It's an email subscription that sends out the novel in real time. The whole story happens between May 3 and November 10. So Dracula Daily will post a newsletter each day that something happens to the characters, in the same timeline that it happens to them. I adore the little weirdo that is Mexican Gothic. It's one of those books that's really grown on me more and more over time.

I have two recommendations for the start of spooky season. The first is Anno Dracula by Kim Newman. It is the first in a fantasy series presenting an alternate history in which Dracula was not stopped but has married the widowed Queen Victoria and vampires represent a large segment of society. The second is The Laws of the Skies by Gregoire Courtois, which is a horrific tale of a school outing gone wrong. You read right on the first page that none of the twelve first graders on this camping trip will make it back home. This hooked me right from the start as I had to know each and every one of their fates, along with whether or not justice would eventually be meted out to the instigator of the cycle of violence. After hearing your description of it, I think I’m going to have to pick up my own copy of The Whistling. It sounds like a perfect way to kick off the season!

Ah, I want to add sooo many of these books to my tbr now! 😍 I read House of Hollow earlier this year and loved it - it was creepy, sinister and very atmospheric (plus it’s a pretty short book). I was disappointed by Mexican Gothic - the first half was great, the second half was ridiculous and gross imo. Misery is great too but I do think you should read Dracula/Interview with the Vampire as I am torn between which one to read so would be great to hear your thoughts on them 😁🎃xx

Hello, I've just discovered your channel and found this video very enjoyable. Hah! I've always found The Mysteries of Udolpho intimidating too, it's a real chunky monkey 🐒🙂. Dracula is one of my all-time favourites, a real one-of-a-kind experience. I re-read Interview With The Vampire a couple of months ago and second time around it was a 5* read for me, so tragic and atmospheric. I'd definitely suggest reading The Haunting of Hill House, Misery and Off Season as they are all great books in their own way. Misery is the Stephen King film adaptation that stays closest to the original novel. Ray Bradbury is one of the masters of the macabre short story. The October Country is a collection of either 13 or 19 stories depending on which edition you have, so will be between 180 and 330 pages long. The Halloween Tree is classed as a 'middle grade' children's book & is just 160 pages. Oh and a 'yay!' for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow too, such a classic tale. Coincidentally, the three novellas you showed at the end are ones I also want to read! Come Closer is a possession story, Things Have Gotten Worse...is set around a dysfunctional relationship borne out of early 2000s internet chat rooms and includes body horror and all I know of Comfort Me With Apples is pretty much the same as you....plus that it goes to a very unexpected place that could possibly blow one's mind. Most intriguing! Oops, apologies if I've been a Ramblin' Ronnie but I just love spooky books (and just books in general). I'll be interested in seeing what you pick for your TBR. Happy reading 🙂🎃🎃.

one thing to keep in mind about sylvia moreno-garcia is that all of her books are very, very different - you've probably been told this ad nauseum, but mexican gothic and velvet was the night and certain dark things are all drastically different genres. certain dark things is a vampire cyberpunk noir set in mexico city, so i think that might be nice for spooky season! but yeah. they are a grab bag of genres, all of which are very very different.

After I have abandoned reading in university, Dracula was the book that actually got me back into reading. I found it super readable. The Interview with the Vampire is BRILLIANT as a book. The film is really good, but the book gives you more - just know it is much more somber and quiet than the movie. Very introspective. Mexican Gothic - definitely recommend, especially since you are the Mushroom girl :D Perfume is on my TBR so I am curious about what you think of it if you decide to read it now. Same with House of Hollow and Luckenbooth. Mysteries of Udolpho.... is LONG and I would not recommend it for right now. Read it just this summer and while it has some tantalizing stuff, I found it underwhelming as a whole. The Phantom of the Opera was the book I read right AFTER Dracula made me a reader again :D I found it to be a very quick read in spite of it being a classic. I liked it! The Haunting of Hillhouse - do NOT expect the TV show at all. But it is beautifully written and I found it spooky as well as an interesting exploration of mental health. Probably pass on it at this moment, there are other books I would say belong into the spooky season more. SO HAPPY somebody has mentioned The Whistling! Absolutely recommend! I enjoyed it immensely and it is PERFECT for October! Also a very quick read. The Spirit Engineer is truly disturbing and dark. A good book that I personally found to be quite depressing at the same time. Recommend, just make sure you are in the right state of mind. The Houdini and Conan Doyle only make brief appearances. Small Angels sound wonderful! Thank you for the tip! Happy reading! 🎃

The Perfume is one of the weirdest, unsettling and most intriguing book I've ever read. Sometimes I felt a disorienting dissonance between what is being said (what is happening in the story) versus how it's being said (the prose). The ending left me starring into the middle distance for a long time before I could normalize my thoughts again.

"Horseman" by Christina Henry and "Sleepy hollow" the film by Tim Burton are both retellings based on the original W. Irving story, you should read that first. "Sleepy hollow" is one of my favorite Burton movies and "Horseman" is quite good though it gravitates towards YA. "The phantom of the opera" the book is quite different from the Broadway musical. I prefer the musical. I recommend you also: "Anatomy a love story", "House of hollow". I'm currently reading a Jean recommendation "The Kingdoms" by Natasha Pulley and enjoying quite a lot so far. I also have on my TBR for the next weeks 2 books based on your reviews (and bought myself copies of): "Babel" & "The witches of New York".
