I've had many baby rats. I used to breed fancy rats. They're really amazing pets of you can handle their short life spans. They're affectionate, curious, social, trainable and intelligent. Oh and pretty clean too. You can train them to use a litter box and they clean themselves. I don't recommend breeding them for most people, although you should have more than one because they are quite social animals. Their babies are called pups because they look just like tiny puppies. I think they resemble Pitbull puppies. They're adorable. Glad these were rescued, but I do feel bad their mom isn't with them.

The difference between wild dogs and a rat is the fact that rats destroy your home walls, car floor, car filter (speaking from experience), shit all over the place. There a hassle to get rid of, there expensive to get rid of, it’s expensive to fix what they’ve destroyed, and it’s all just for these things that live like 1/10 of a dogs life but ruin half of mine. That’s why rats have such a bad rep, Ty for your time.

Baby rats! I had two mama rats give birth within a day of each other (they came to me already preggo) and one of them died, while the other had a large litter and couldn't feed any more. So I got a crash course in hand-feeding baby rats, and I worked together with that Mama Rat--she did all the cleaning and grooming, and I supplement-fed ALL the babies, so that ALL of them could have turns nursing as well (I wanted them to survive, and for all of then to get at least HALF of their diet via mother's milk was better than half of them getting none at all). She seemed to understand what we were doing. Before this happened, she'd been totally standoffish; the gentler, more-trusting Mama was the one who died, tragically. But she changed. She seemed to understand that I was helping...even to understand WHAT we were doing, which amazed me. We raised 18 baby rats together (including one that was born with dwarfism, and malformed) and they ALL survived until they could eat solid food. Even the baby born genetically disabled lived for much much longer than it would have otherwise. And that's how I wound up learning firsthand that pet rats (if handled from birth) are as friendly and as smart as most dogs...but have a fraction of the lifespan. Imagine having to put down your heart-dog after only 3 years together--because 3 years is about the average lifespan of a pet rat. Gizmo made it to 3.5...and then he developed a huge tumor on his neck that started to choke him as it grew...and there was nothing at all that I could do about it, except to tell my best buddy goodbye before the vet put him to sleep. All the heart went out of me after that. I never had any pet rats again. Discovering that all this time, when humans have treated them as *vermin* they've actually been so freaking intelligent that they are SMARTER than some dogs was shocking to me. And discovering that truth...only to lose the rat I learned it from in such an awful, cruel way. I haven't been near a pet rat since then. He died in 2019. *sad*

@@kiddfaith4397yeah! I have no idea why people portray rats as stupid and gross- they are very intelligent creatures and not that gross if they don’t have a disgusting environment to live in. And the same goes with how people say pigeons are stupid and owls are wise- umm- swap those two please because what..? Pigeons are extremely smart and honestly owls are just plain stupid.
@acgray197225 күн бұрын
Domestic rats may be cute and smart... But there are reasons they're banned as pets. Wild rats are so destructive. I guarantee anyone co-habitating with wild mice, rats, opossums ect arent owning their own homes. You have to draw a line. If your going to have pets, make sure they're domesticated!
@kiddfaith439724 күн бұрын
@@acgray1972 What do you mean that a homeowner wouldn’t own a pet rat or mouse? _I’m_ a homeowner, Lol. There’s a huge difference between owning a domesticated pet rat that lives in a cage when you’re not interacting with it and letting a wild critter live in your walls. As for pet opossums, which some people do have as exotic pets…it’s far more likely that a homeowner would have one, as landlords are more likely to be skeptical of uncommon, exotic, merely tamed pets. 😂 But yes, you’re right about the destructive part. Aside from wild rats being household pests, they breed quickly where there’s food and can decimate crops. That’s why domestic rats are illegal where I live; my province is heavily reliant on canola and grain, but we have very few wild rats, if any. Some irresponsible domesticated pet owners will dump them in the wild, instead of rehoming them, and some domesticated animals will survive easily, breed and go feral if dumped in the wild, becoming an invasive species. If that happened here with domesticated rats we’d be in trouble.
@acgray197224 күн бұрын
@@kiddfaith4397 I've actually had a pet opossum, chipmunk. I've also been a wild life rehabber. I used to own about a flock of 50 chickens. When you have chickens, in the city no less your apt to get rats and mice... Even draw racoons and opposums. To me they're destructive vermin. But people whom own their homes, I think would less likely to befriend and" rescue" with intent on keeping as pets and breeding with domestic animals. I feel it's highly irrational for one to put so much time into trapping, and"home made vetting" destructive vermin. Owning a home seems that people would be more into having domestic animals and it would be far from cute to have vermin breeding and crawling on your cabinets.
