Reading the comments, never have i ever seen a factor of animal care so paramount to an animal's life as much as a rat's companionship with another rat.
@sweettangerines8182 Жыл бұрын
In simple, regular terms/language:. "after I read the comments, I learned that the most important thing to consider, when keeping a rat/rats is the fact that they thrive in groups of 2 or more. It's very important that rats are never kept alone. Whenever possible, please keep rats in groups of 2 or more. ... If I may add. This advice about companionship goes for lots of other rodents eg: rabbits, Guinea pigs, capybaras, prairie dogs etc
@TheDorianTube Жыл бұрын
People like to parrot other people's good points. 80% of the comment section is about that, and you will STILL find plenty of guys thinking '' That's not enough, they NEED ME, I'm the protagonist, I will be the one that tells them this. It has to be me ''. Even this comment has one of these guys telling OP that 2 rats are important. Thank god you were around bro, the other 1000 weren't clear enough, and OP obviously didn't know about the 2 rats either lol

Rats make amazing pets. I’ve had several through the years. Worst thing about them is they only live around 2 years. Females are susceptible to cancer. It would always break my heart that they’d leave us so soon. But they’re intelligent, so much fun, friendly, and will follow you around like puppies. And yes, they are sociable, so are always happiest with at least 1 rat buddy, but will still love their human companions.

They're honestly the best pets, but in the wild, they live even shorter, usually less than a year. The issue is that predation has made natural selection unable to weed out genetic conditions, like: mycoplasma, hind leg degeneration, rampant amounts of cancer and tumors, bad vision, diabetes, kidney and heart disease, teeth malocclusion, and powerful allergies.

I had a pet rat in highschool. He was black and white and I named him Panda❤ got him from my biology teacher when her rats had babies. I brought him to school with me most days, he hid in my purse and the hood of my sweatshirt. I'd sit in the back of class and put my purse on the desk. He would organise my pens, reciepts, etc. He got really big and I finally got caught in Math class when he was sitting on my lap under the desk and his tail was hanging off to the side. The teacher was like wtf is that lol but he didn't get mad, or send me to the office. I miss Panda, he was by far one of the best pets I've ever had. They only live a few years 😢

I've had many rats, and i see a lot of people being sad about how short they live. After crying many times because of their death, i simply started being fine with it, not because i don't care but because now i think that living 2~4 years is actually fine to them and even if it is too little, it's awesome that i can make their short lives so happy and out of worries.

Unrelated but I am struggling with human deaths and this makes me remember someone telling me "Getting to exist is an exceedingly rare opportunity considering the scale of universe that is quite possibly lifeless, which then reminds me that we’re not even really “supposed to” be here in the first place. So when I think of death I realize that it’s actually the default way of things for us as life forms, to not exist. Life is so incredibly rare and I think of life as kind of a blooper in the universe. Realizing this feels like an existential crisis at first, but then over time it’s actually comforting emotionally. Because it’s easier to accept the deaths of others when you think of how little a chance we had to be born in the first place. This mindset makes it much easier to handle the loss of loved ones, it’s just the way of the universe. Nothing more, nothing less" I feel that yours and this person's mindset, really gives me some peace about my biggest fear, which is losing a loved one(pet included). 2 years is a gift for the rat and a gift for the world to have that precious rat!

Three more things to keep in mind: 1. Rats have short lifespans, usually about 2 years or a bit more. They are prone to tumors near the end of their lives. You can factor in vet bills, and the losses will be heartbreaking. But they are indeed great pets, and once in a while you will encounter a particularly special companion you will especially cherish and never forget. 2. Be very careful to avoid mixing sexes unless you want huge numbers of pups. 3. Rats must constantly gnaw on things to keep their ever-growing teeth under control. They will not bite YOU, but charging cables, electrical wires, furniture, paper, textiles or anything else they can get to is fair game. If you let them roam, you must rat-proof the area and/or supervise.

they’re actually omnivores, and while fruits, veggies, and pellets can cut it, they actually love cooked eggs! they can have a little bit of cheese too, it’s like cake to them in that it’s super tasty but too much will make them sick. and sometimes my rats tried to nibble on me while “grooming” my fingers, but only ever really bit me if i was wearing gloves to clean their cage as they didn’t know my hands were under there. They also make this grinding noise with their teeth called bruxing that means they’re happy! if they’re super happy and bruxing really hard, their eyes will boggle out, which can look a little concerning but doesn’t hurt them at all.

@@skiddadleskidoodle4585 They're probably not actually eating that stuff, just chewing on it. Rodents front teeth never stop growing so they need stuff to chew on to keep them filed down. If you don't give em chew toys they'll find anything else. But they are omnivorous scavengers and can get nutrients from almost anything that contains them, including slightly rotten food. Their keen sense of smell, good immune system and strong stomach acids make them good at making use of pretty much whatever they can find that's edible. There is food too rotten for rats tho, they'll smell and leave that for vultures or decomposers. and foods that are toxic to them, they can normally get around this because they're careful with sampling new foods so I believe rat poison has to be highly potent. Very cool animals, very resilient.

DO NOT BATHE YOUR RATS. Unless they are sick, too old, or have trouble grooming

@@MicahMG999 It’s important to keep them warm and dry them quickly after a bath. But generally, bathing isn’t necessary because rats groom themselves. @@PCRieffer Males and females have different behaviours and (in some cases) needs! Do plenty of research before commiting! Any pair of rats can work together if they show no signs of aggression regardless of gender. Though be warned that male×female pairings can lead to sexual agression even if they've been neutered/spayed. If the rats are from different litters, or haven't been introduced previously I'd suggest slowly introducing them in a neutral environment over the course of a few days. to avoid possible harm between them. Monitor them closely during this time. Don't worry if they "fight" a bit with eachother, rats playfight all the time just for fun or for dominance.

Totally agree. My three beloved rats had vet bills that were comparable to cats or dogs. If anything, taking a rat to the vet may be more expensive because they require an 'exotics' vet for proper care. But the alternative - not seeking care when they are sick or hurt - is unacceptable in my opinion. The decision to get pet rats should go along with finding a vet and setting aside funds for medical care.

@@JamesYates-lw4tc they meant "plague". In case anyone is curious: Rats are very notorious throughout human history as being INDIRECT vectors of transmission for Yersinia pestis, a.k.a. bubonic plague, a.k.a. Black Death, which killed quite a large number of people in the Middle Ages. They don't directly harbor the Yersinia bacteria that causes it: instead, rat fleas are the primary vector of transmission, and those fleas that live on the rats then become a threat of infection to humans when the human comes in contact with the flea-ridden rat. Anyway, the difference between Yersinia infection in the Middle Ages and now is that now we have the means to easily treat infected people. It's just a problem in very undeveloped areas and when people don't know they have it. So yes, you can still contract bubonic plague, but no, it likely won't kill you -- IF you get medical attention in time.

Rats are various medium-sized, long-tailed rodents. Species of rats are found throughout the order Rodentia, but stereotypical rats are found in the genus Rattus. Other rat genera include Neotoma (pack rats), Bandicota (bandicoot rats) and Dipodomys (kangaroo rats). Rats are typically distinguished from mice by their size. Usually the common name of a large muroid rodent will include the word "rat", while a smaller muroid's name will include "mouse". The common terms rat and mouse are not taxonomically specific. There are 56 known species of rats in the world.[1] Species and description A rat in a suburb of Vancouver Skeleton of a black rat (Rattus rattus) on display at the Museum of Osteology. The best-known rat species are the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus). This group, generally known as the Old World rats or true rats, originated in Asia. Rats are bigger than most Old World mice, which are their relatives, but seldom weigh over 500 grams (17+1⁄2 oz) in the wild.[2] The term rat is also used in the names of other small mammals that are not true rats. Examples include the North American pack rats (aka wood rats[3]) and a number of species loosely called kangaroo rats.[3] Rats such as the bandicoot rat (Bandicota bengalensis) are murine rodents related to true rats but are not members of the genus Rattus.[4][5] Male rats are called bucks; unmated females, does, pregnant or parent females, dams; and infants, kittens or pups. A group of rats is referred to as a mischief.[6] The common species are opportunistic survivors and often live with and near humans; therefore, they are known as commensals. They may cause substantial food losses, especially in developing countries.[7] However, the widely distributed and problematic commensal species of rats are a minority in this diverse genus. Many species of rats are island endemics, some of which have become endangered due to habitat loss or competition with the brown, black, or Polynesian rat.[8] Wild rodents, including rats, can carry many different zoonotic pathogens, such as Leptospira, Toxoplasma gondii, and Campylobacter.[9] The Black Death is traditionally believed to have been caused by the microorganism Yersinia pestis, carried by the tropical rat flea (Xenopsylla cheopis), which preyed on black rats living in European cities during the epidemic outbreaks of the Middle Ages; these rats were used as transport hosts. Another zoonotic disease linked to the rat is foot-and-mouth disease.[10] Rats become sexually mature at age 6 weeks, but reach social maturity at about 5 to 6 months of age. The average lifespan of rats varies by species, but many only live about a year due to predation.[11] The black and brown rats diverged from other Old World rats in the forests of Asia during the beginning of the Pleistocene.[12] Rat tails A closeup of a rat tail The characteristic long tail of most rodents is a feature that has been extensively studied in various rat species models, which suggest three primary functions of this structure: thermoregulation,[13] minor proprioception, and a nocifensive-mediated degloving response.[14] Rodent tails-particularly in rat models-have been implicated with a thermoregulation function that follows from its anatomical construction. This particular tail morphology is evident across the family Muridae, in contrast to the bushier tails of Sciuridae, the squirrel family. The tail is hairless and thin skinned but highly vascularized, thus allowing for efficient countercurrent heat exchange with the environment. The high muscular and connective tissue densities of the tail, along with ample muscle attachment sites along its plentiful caudal vertebrae, facilitate specific proprioceptive senses to help orient the rodent in a three-dimensional environment.[15] Murids have evolved a unique defense mechanism termed degloving that allows for escape from predation through the loss of the outermost integumentary layer on the tail. However, this mechanism is associated with multiple pathologies that have been the subject of investigation.[citation needed] Microscopic cross section of Rattus rattus tail, delineating tendon bundles, vasculature, and vertebral canal. Multiple studies have explored the thermoregulatory capacity of rodent tails by subjecting test organisms to varying levels of physical activity and quantifying heat conduction via the animals' tails. One study demonstrated a significant disparity in heat dissipation from a rat's tail relative to its abdomen.[16] This observation was attributed to the higher proportion of vascularity in the tail, as well as its higher surface-area-to-volume ratio, which directly relates to heat's ability to dissipate via the skin. These findings were confirmed in a separate study analyzing the relationships of heat storage and mechanical efficiency in rodents that exercise in warm environments. In this study, the tail was a focal point in measuring heat accumulation and modulation.[citation needed] On the other hand, the tail's ability to function as a proprioceptive sensor and modulator has also been investigated. As aforementioned, the tail demonstrates a high degree of muscularization and subsequent innervation that ostensibly collaborate in orienting the organism.[17] Specifically, this is accomplished by coordinated flexion and extension of tail muscles to produce slight shifts in the organism's center of mass, orientation, etc., which ultimately assists it with achieving a state of proprioceptive balance in its environment. Further mechanobiological investigations of the constituent tendons in the tail of the rat have identified multiple factors that influence how the organism navigates its environment with this structure. A particular example is that of a study in which the morphology of these tendons is explicated in detail.[18] Namely, cell viability tests of tendons of the rat's tail demonstrate a higher proportion of living fibroblasts that produce the collagen for these fibers. As in humans, these tendons contain a high density of golgi tendon organs that help the animal assess stretching of muscle in situ and adjust accordingly by relaying the information to higher cortical areas associated with balance, proprioception, and movement.[citation needed]

Be sure to *always* get two or more rats. Not only do rats absolutely need fellow rat friends, but if you get two rats you have two wonderful, beautiful little rats. :)

“If you’re thinking about getting one rat” NO. If you have one. You can have 2+. There’s no significant differences in care or resources. Please don’t share videos that normalize owning one rat. Everything else was wonderful but they shouldn’t be kept alone unless under extremely rare circumstances

getting only one rat is animal abuse, they will get depression and pass away without a ratty friend

I'd even go as far as say that 3 is the minimum, which means more space, more maintenance, and more commitment. However, I also tend to argue that dogs need to be kept in social pairs. If they're "social animal" or considered a "pack animal", there should be 2 (preferably more) of the same species in one group (or for dogs, same breeds)

I just bought a rat and hamster that should be good enough.

@@User_92020 thats abusing BOTH those animals..... rats need more rat companions while hamsters should be kept separately from others... please tell me you knew that and are just trying to troll, this isnt very funny.

I had a pair of rats long ago. They lived in a very large custom-made cage with bedrooms and exercise wheels and toys, and a flat pan cage floor that snapped on to the bottom of the cage. I fed them organic produce and good-quality rat chow, and spent quality time playing and communicating with them daily. They quickly learned to recognize the names I gave them, and insisted on cleanliness and tidiness. If I didn't change their wood shavings soon enough to suit them, they would throw all of their bedding out of their bedrooms, run over to the side of their cage, and screech at me. ☺️ One day when they were out of their cage exploring, I tried an experiment: It took just a few minutes and one demo to train them to use a potty pad. They never left a single ticket around the house after that. They would come jetting out of whatever obscure corner they were investigating and beeline for their potty pad (a retired potholder) and use it, then return to their adventuring. I was dumbfounded--I knew they were intelligent, but hadn't realized they are THAT smart! I miss them very much.

Rats are social creature. They need companionship. Rats need toys to keep them entertained. Me looking back at my rats : Alright guys ,which one do you prefer? Xbox or Playstation? Also ,let play Dokapon.

DO NOT GET ONE RAT. I made this mistake and my poor lil girl was lonely for a while until I adopted another one. I happened to have a lot of time to play with her, but even with that she was still not living her best life.
