Hey Trent! Looks like its a compensating double! It is a pretty unique and interesting design though. I believe their original purpose was to be lighter versions of french horns, hence why the massive valve to cut away any extra tubing. From what I learned in college, it is much lighter than an average horn, but the extra twists and turns in the tubing make it difficult to tune, as you can only tune the slides for one side of horn, and there is the risk of the other side being a little bit wonky. On a normal double horn you can tune the slides for the Bb and F sides individually and not have to worry about this problem. I'd love to see what you find when you get it working though. Best of luck!

As for the repair part, complete disassembly would be my best idea to get the trigger valve and slides working

Cornford makes these instruments too, which include a Triple Horn & a Double Wagner Tuba. This instrument is basically half the weight of an Average Double French Horn so it's much easier for kids to learn on.

Being a horn player, I'm extatic to have you starting a series on it. I will not be able to donate due to money issues, but I really hope you are able to restore the horn with the money you raise. Love your videos so much. Keep up the amazing work

definitely worth restoring in my opinion. I will try to donate as soon as I can

In Jasper Rees' book "A Devil to Play" his old horn, which he picks up after over twenty years having not played it since high school, is a Lidl. He describes it as being very heavy compared to a more "modern" horn. It's also a very entertaining read for anybody musically inclined.

Hey - I bid already in the past for the same instrument here in Europe. I think it changed already various times the owner You say you paid about 150€ (or $?) - some year ago I would have paid more ;-) , because it is a very interesting design - even if this type of very long rotary valves are predestinate to get stuck due horizontal use and the huge weight and surface.... Josef Lidl from BRNO is a well known instrument maker in Europe (I wonder that you never heard before?). And yes - I think you have to find a skilled lover of brass instruments with a lot of free time in order to make proper restoration... Looking forward for the videos about ;-) - and thank for all of your videos - great channel

Hello, Trent, I hope your day has gone well. I am having trouble with growling and my breathing and not to mention I am having trouble changing pitch without tonguing. Do you have any tips? (I don't think this matters but I play a normal horn in F, not a double horn, only 3 valves.) Thank you by the way for the information and tips in your other French horn videos. :)

Hey Trent! I'm a high school trombone player and I recently got a mellophonium. It's a really cool instrument but its mouthpiece is very small and my music teacher told me not to play it cause it would screw up my chops... How do you play tuba, trombone, trumpet, and horn without destroying your chops ????!!!!! Plz send help. Also it has a stuck adapter so I can only play mellophonium with a horn mouthpiece. I sound really good on trombone, suck on trumpet and had okay tone on horn/ mellophonium and I really wanted to pursue it. If you do read this, thank you so much for reading it
@suckhotapple69138 жыл бұрын
Hey Abel, I'm a french horn player who started on trumpet and regularly play on trumpet and mellophone, both of which have very similar mouthpieces. I have also learned trombone, euphonium, and tuba, and found I had the opposite problem as you, as I struggled to improve my tone on them. I have found long tones and lip slurs, while focusing on keeping a round open sound throughout all registers is the best way to improve tone. It takes time, and there's no way to cut it short, but it works wonders for your tone. As for switching back and forth, you have to make sure you are using the right embouchure for each instrument, as each is slightly different. I have found it really easy to do if you play multiple instruments during the same day, as too long on one instrument has made me lose some of the work I've done on the others. But I wouldn't really try to use a mellophonium regularly. It's not really a lead instrument or one that many people take seriously so much as it is a very very primitive mellophone. I'd love to hear Trent's opinion though. Best of luck Abel!
@billygarvey6337 жыл бұрын
Abel Cecchi yes, trombone to a horn mouthpiece is a drastic change. Overall, I've found that going from a large mouthpiece to a small mouthpiece is more difficult than going from a small to large mouthpiece. I'm a trumpet player, and I was able to pick up trombone and euphonium decently in about a month. My friend, a trombone player, is trying to learn trumpet, and it seems to be proving much more difficult for him to get a good tone on trumpet than it was for me on trombone. Playing a smaller mouthpiece may help improve range, as you're working the inner muscles to make a tighter buzz. I've found that trombone playing also helps my trumpet embouchure, but I'm not quite sure why

a easy way to fix the dents would be steal balls and really strong magnets their are videos on how to do it and a kit cost around 40 bucks or less( american dollar) other than that the valves can be taken out with some wd40 and i dont know about the 4th valve fingering maybe a professional should look at that
@rossanderson48728 жыл бұрын
there is video on dent repair on a conn 20k and it is basically the "kit" i mentioned exept you'll need a smaller magnetic ball then the one they use on the tuba

the united states army field band did a demonstration on how to remove slides on trumpet it should be the same concept for the french horn
@TrentHamilton8 жыл бұрын
Hi, I've got steel balls and a very strong magnet. The trouble is that this only works on large dents. When you have small tubing the mass of the small steel balls is not sufficient to roll the dents out. The smallest steel ball that works is about 40mm in my experience. wd40 doesn't seem to make a difference so far.
@rossanderson48728 жыл бұрын
Trent Hamilton i guess i didnt think about the size of the french horn tubes sorry. i suggested the wd 40 because in marching band we used it inbetween the slides and let the instruments sit and it would eat at the corrosion stopping the main tuning slide from coming out

so I play the French horn and I would recommend that you go into your local music store and get the horn evaluated. or you order a horn made by a different producer, or on eBay a legit double horn. if u r not looking to spend your money on a professional horn made by Yamaha or Holton I would recommend you check out the STERLING brand, or look for a nicer horn that has been used, you can get good deals on eBay, you just have to be sure you are getting your money's worth

As a Instrumentbuilder, the suggestion in the comments to use WD40 is kind of appalling to me. Valves (Rotor) need to be taken out and cleaned in a "solution" that's appropriate for the purpose at hand. Also the inside of the horn itself. Top and bottom bearing surfaces of the rotors and Valve must be set tight and honed to work perfect together before assembling. The already mentioned method of using a magnet works most of the time only on bigger instruments like tuba or euphonium. The "dedenting" is a whole other aspect which requires kind of special tools and knowledge. Nothing i would advise a "hobbyist" to do. Due to the fact Australia is literally around the world, nothing much i can help on the horn itself. Cheers David
