Nic: with all the uncertainty and anxiety abounding in the world just now, it is so refreshing to be able to relax and de-stress with your videos. Not sure how long you guys will be able to continue mudlarking the Thames, but here's hoping you will continue to do so for as long as possible. We need you right now more than ever! Please stay healthy!

Thanks as always for being a bright spot and a relaxation point for my day. Thankfully I get to spend lots of time outdoors walking with the dog, and do occasionally find things in parks and parking lots. These days my dog is happy to give love to anyone we meet and leash length distance is perfect. Stay well Nicola and all viewers!

A beautiful Springlike day here in Pennsylvania! And with your video Nic it only added to this beautiful day being outside and reorganizing for Spring. And a wonderful Spring Equinox to you as well. Surely it must be a magical time to explore the shores of the Thames! Thank You Kindly! I always enjoy the information you find out about the things you find. Like little George Smith, shivering and hungry and making buttons for barely enough to keep him alive. I wonder how his adult life turned out? Love, Light and Peace! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Excellent video; I love how you incorporate the sounds of the waterbirds and waves into everything, to me it makes it all so much more present. And I watched it with two of my pet Bearded Dragons on the couch with me, and as soon as the sounds of the gulls came up they both went on the alert-- if you're a lizard, birds are your major predator. Just a suggestions about what to make with that collection of phones: Two fish linked together, the image of Pisces. You could make such wonderful scales with the fronts and backs and other pieces of the phones! And the two fish, tied to one another... there's a nice little image of communication. I'm not big into Astrology but I do love how we're hardwired (depending on our cultures) to read certain meanings into symbols, and the houses of astrology offer so much fun to play with-- you could do a whole series with what you find. ^_^ Or just Pisces, for the River Thames; either/or. Whatever you choose to make, I'll bet it'll be wonderful. This sad bit of history about the button-maker's trade was pretty appalling; I wondered if the poor boy whose details you gave had a family that had fallen down in their finances, since he had once had a little schooling but it had stopped. Poor kid; I hope his life improved. Lastly, that bottle was just glorious-- it made me think of dragonfly-wings! Gorgeous.

The punt is possibly derivative of pontelo, an Italian word meaning “little bridge” which is the connection between the pipe and the glass piece you are working on. When the pipe is removed after the piece is finished it’s called a pontil mark. Common on handmade bottles and marbles. We try to either fire polish or cold work them after, harder to do with such a deep recess.

I saw the phenning and knew what it was. I knew it was a German/Prussian coin. The silver scene coin/medal could be a pilgrims medal from visiting a holy site like Rome. I love buttons. My grandmother worked as a spinner as a young girl. But not the ages of the children in some mills in the 1800's. So nice to watch and forget the virus. I hope you and yours are well and safe.

Ah, thanks for the fix. I had the opportunity to be in London last Saturday after my metal detecting tour ended, and spent a couple hours by Oxo Wharf. Pottery and bits...no pipe bowls, unfortunately. My late March trip to London and daily foreshore walking for me, has unfortunately been cancelled as are most other travels these days. When we reschedule, I'll be back (hopefully this year) and plan to put my new 3 year permit to good use. In the meantime, I'll sit here and drool over my keyboard as I watch your absolutely lovely videos. Again, thank you!

Fascinating as always Nicola. Those toes were so creepy! Loved the iridescence on the bottle but for poignancy the buttons and token have it for me. I remember train personnel wearing those railway buttons in the 50’s. And the Hasluck button’s a reminder that child labour has only changed location and not gone away, and that for some families it’s a lifesaving necessity still. Thank you. Always such a pleasure to share your mudlarking adventures and your many interesting finds.

Hey! Any chance of you responding to my comment about the origin of the word "dollar" from the word "thaler". The Dutch are claiming they did it. But I think it came from Danish.. I could be wrong. In the US they teach us that the word "dollar" came from the Danish pronunciation of the word "thaler". Either way, plenty of people of Danish ancestry where i am from. Deep South, USA!
