Had this happen a few years ago on a 2001 Honda Rancher that I bought new. It had been starting perfectly I always had a battery maintainer hooked to it since I bought it new. One day I tried to start it, nothing it was dead no spark,battery good,etc. I worked on it off and on for a week with no luck. Finally I found the culprit,it was a main frame ground wire rear right tire that was corroded and not making good ground contact. I cleaned that up,put a dab of grease on the connections and it fired right up and ran fine until the day I sold it 3 or 4 years later. My Rancher had never seen any mud or water, so yes just the humidity in the air over time can cause connections to surface rust up and cause you a headache. Also even if a battery is showing good voltage I also would have it load tested, that can also be the culprit at times.

Great video, thanks! Do you have any ideas why a Honda Fourtrax might turn over, but not catch and start? Lights are on, battery is good, engine turns but will not go. Thank you. (fuel is getting to the carby, and tried recharging battery as well as jump starting it, but it just turns over).

If you're getting fuel, you need to check for spark. Check your plug, fuses, test the output of your rectifier.

I have a 03 recon Trx 250 and I have no issue starting and running while being pulled but will not crank when tried by the cable or the button and then there no throttle response because it also shuts off in neutral anyway you could guid me through awesome vids pretty direct and helpful

If you got a Kawasaki Bayou 300 like me all of this troubleshooting done above I had done but still missing out on something ! My quad would turn on with all the lights and everything, and when i pressed the starter button it would start 1 times out of 10 ! And when it got really cold out it would not start at all except with the pull cord... Then after some digging on the Bayou microfiche I found there was a cylinder relay under the quad just above the muffler hanging on the ATV... I got that replaced and BAM my ATV starts like a new one now !

Just because the solenoid clicks doesn't mean the starter is bad I have seen lots of solenoid click and the contacts inside be burnt up so always check your starter to your positive to see if your starter still turns over.

@@carterfunair2999 sometimes you can push start button and it will click n nothing happens, in that case try pushing start button and hitting starter solenoid with something to jar it, sometimes it will crank with a jolt, but if not then cross the starter contacts to make sure it cranks, if after all that, then replace the solenoid.

I'm not getting spark on my 1997 Honda Foreman 400 I replaced the stator, pulse coil,ignition switch,ignition coil,cdi box,regulator,spark plug,battery what else could be wrong I hope its not the timmimg when I'm at top dead center the piston comes to the top of the cylinder when T Mark is shown in timmimg hole I'm getting signal from the stator to the pulse coil into the ICM

Wow, James. It looks like you have covered 90% of your electrical system. I'm assuming fuses were checked, relay switch. Did you test your kill switch? It could be a shorted wire somewhere.

Partzilla what's so weird about that is im lights along with the low beams it does turn over. the kill switch is my next thing to replace I think that could be my problem only thing I didn't replace yet was the ignition coil cap which I'll be getting that today if it still doesn't get spark then I'll replaced the Killswitch let you know how that goes

during installation put some dielectric paste on connections for a water proof and corrosion resistant connection to last you a long time. check the connection from your battery as well. with a wire brush or a gun barrel brush cleaner, clean the terminals [ nuts and bolts ] , and post. coat them in the dielectric paste and reassemble and snug them up really good . during installation put some dielectric paste on connections for a water proof, corrosion resistant connection to last you a long time. samething happened to the 4 wheeler my brother had gotten, that i had fixed the same way i described above. now it starts no problwm. 1988 honda 300 fourtrax , trx 300 2 x 4 style shaft drive.

Oh I found this out my self, if the motor turns over and doesn’t start check the wire that goes down below your shifter and make sure it’s connected, I’ve wasted over 300$ on battery and starters, but It was a little wire disconnected

Great video !! What if you have a 2001 Yamaha kodiak the neutral light indicator light and a new push button ignition switch and the only time the headlights and neutral light indication work is when you jump the solenoid. Starter works and it runs but only by jumping

05 Yamaha Bruin 350 2x4 was running beautiful after a day of riding turned it off to get the trailer ready to load and tried to start the bike. Starter and everything work but lost spark. I have replaced starter solenoids that have functioning relay coils but the high current contacts are burned. You can easily test the starter at this point by jumping battery positive to the starter lead post of the starter solenoid. Also a test light to check if voltage is making it from the start button to the relay coil of the start solenoid would be advisable. Initial steps for checking battery and fuse spot on.

I've got a 1988 300 4x4 fourtrax, the fuses are good an have neutral light, the kick start never turned the engine over since I bought the machine second hand. So just used the starter, but now all of a sudden I can't turn the engine over, the machine also won't click into gear so there's no way to tow it to see if the engine will turn over. Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

I got my wife a 2008 trx400ex. split the case fixed 2nd gear. put it all back together. well we went riding this weekend. was fine but clutch and yes it was brand new started slipping and quad just stopped pulling. got it back to camp next morning wake up go to crank it crunk fine tried to just load it on trailer motor died won't start at all doesn't even turn over. would the clutch going out make it do nothing. i watched your vids and done alot if the work myself so thanks any advice would be a great help

When I do a cold start I have to give my honda TRX 400ex gas a few times to get it going I already checked the carburetor it wasn't dirty except for the jets so I had that clean out and it still doing the same but when I give it gas I hear a lil tic when it first starts up. Buddy got a cheap Chinese 4 wheeler for his 6 year old son to ride. It won’t start. Lights turn on and battery seems fine. I will check the starter next and any fuses. Hope it works.

Hey John. My problem is with a 2000 Honda Foreman 450 ES. It started just fine yesterday. Now today the electronic start button, both headlight switches, and the kill switch don’t work. However, the electronic shifter buttons work just fine. I tested the solenoid and the starter. They both work fine. No clicking when I hit the start button. No noise at all. The green light does come on when I turn the key. I checked the fuses, none of them look blown. Maybe I didn’t see one? I only saw six total. Four inside of the rectangular box, and 2 separate 30 amp fuses by themselves. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have an 06 Yamaha bruin 350 that I bought like 8 year ago, I've put it through some tough stuff in deep water,it's fully snorkeld and dialectric greased but the cdi box shorts out very quickly and I replace it about every 3 to 8 months with the fuses and sometimes it won't crank up, and it makes a short tap or click in the solenoid and sometimes buzzes.What should I do?Thanks

My 97 yamaha turns over but doesn't got a new carburetor, adjusted it 9 way to sunday but couldn't get the spudder out so i took it back off to make sure the floats were acting right only to find the air flow needle tip had broke and was stuck in the hole.so i got it out and put the old one back in and a little shorter but had a chance to see if it does because it won't fire just turn over. Oh and the plug got stripped going back in now it takes a 14/1.25 instead of the original 12/1.25 would this ccx ause it to not fire? Thank for your help

I have a 2009 honda rincon 680 fuel injected, will not start, replaced everything, fuel pump, fuel relay, air filter, spark plug. when i replaced the fuel pump assembly ran for a little while and then stopped again, would star and run poorly intermittantly, I have even drained and put fresh fuel in it. If i take the air filter of and use a little starting fluid it runs perfectly. I'm thinking I may have gotten a defective fuel pump, I have a new fuel pump rebuild kit coming today, going to give that a try. What are your thoughts on this matter? Tony Kucherry

The starter solenoid doesn't create spark for the motor, it just engages the starter.

We have a Polaris Sportsman 90. It was running (except for the when the darn chain would come off). Turned it off and 15 minutes later went to start it and only have clicking noise. Thanks for the video!.....I have an 08 Can-Am Outlander 500 XT. It has had intermittent issues with what made me think the battery was dead. Key on, no lights but hear fuel pump...won't crank over. Jumping solenoid turns the starter over but even with key on, it won't start and again the dash lights, headlights, etc don't come on and it won't crank over unless jumping solenoid and even then it won't start, just cranks over? I plan on removing wires, cleaning terminals up and maybe putting a lil grease on terminals. I'm not getting acc voltage to the solenoid. Hand park brake is on, I pressed the pedal brake, kill switch is in on position, and tried in Park & Neutral with same result. Any info would GREATLY be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hey Sir, just picked up this 2004 Polarius magnum 330. It has spark although i really don't like the E3 plugs. The guy looks like he replace the coil and i do have spark. Compression is 160. I'm not going to pull the head yet to see if a valve is the culprit or not. I've got the battery on charge now and going to see if fuel is actually flowing or not. The guy told me that he bypassed the reserve fuel....don't ask me why. I'm a small engine guy...this is a little bit above my knowledge, but should have the same principles. I asked him what was the last thing he did he stated that he gave it a lot of throttle and it quit from that day????

So I’ve had an 04 Honda 400ex for 8 months go riding all the time and last weekend I started it up was letting it idle and it cut off and I tried to turn it back on and it made a click and lost all power. Mr John, My 1999 honda 400ex wont start. I think it has to do with electrical, bc no green light, no nothin. This is an excellent video. For my own future reference: 1. Check the battery. 2. This little junction right here. Fuses. 3. Jump the solenoid directly from the battery. 4. You probably have a bad starter.

I have a yamaha bear tracker 250. Currently, the headlights won't turn on and the atv will not make any noise when I try to start it. The neutral light turns on once the vehicle is running. If the Solenoid clicks and starter doesnt make any noise. occasionally I hear the starter make a weak turn, but nothing consistent, mainly just a click from solenoid. does this mean starter is bad? I replaced battery and checked that fuse and all is good.

Nish, thanks for the compliments. I would start by load testing your battery. As long as you are confident you have enough juice and it's still not turning and everything looks in order, then you can move on to the starter. Always check the easy stuff first, it'll save you money in the long run.

Yes everything on the carb is fine. I have even took a carb off a tuning machine with the same results. I have also tried a new cdi and coil and air filter.

+Brandon B What does the spark plug look like? Plus make sure you don't have a intake leak. Quick way to do that is to spray the intake boot with some carb cleaner as it's running at idle. If its revs up, your intake boot is cracked.

So what’s left to check if mines dose all of that, I’m not getting any spark, but the rest of my quad works fine

ok I have a question I have a 2004 kfx400 was running fine until I redid all the fluids and now it tries to start ( turns over ) but won't actually start

Hey partzilla.com,I've been working on a buddies 93 KLF 300. I put a new battery and new selenoid, a new starter relay. Cleaned all the wires and put a new fuse in, although the neutral light won't turn on nor will the reverse light come on. (I thought it was simply the bulbs out)If I put some juice to the starter with my jumper box it turns over. But I don't hear a click from my selenoid when I push the start button. I got the ATV to run finally with a pull start. I was wondering; could it be the neutral safety switch that wouldn't allow the push button to operate? Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a 400 kal atv that won't start , natural light works, starters good ,solenoid clicks. won't turn over .tried bypassing solenoid with hot wire from solenoid to starter it didn't engage starter so could the solenoid still be bad?

i have a 2006 honda 350 4x4 it will turn but will not crank up last time i was driving it just shut complenty off and it wasn''t shooting fire in the spark plug what could be wrong with it

okay I just bought a 2002 Honda 400EX and it started raining and I put it away overnight whentowork came home started at it rain and then head to gas it died but I think I had the choke on but now I can't get it to run it wants to fire and I bought carburetor and a couple other thingsif you have any ideas for me. I mean true mad at me this is my first 400 e x I rebuilt 250R so I mean I have experience but not experienced with a 400EX. And another thing would it be just easier to buy a whole new harness? one more question on the left side of the motor there's a war going down till like almost the bottom of it what is that wire is that would like the oil temperature or something like that, hope you can answer soon thank you so much

Have 2000 honda 400ex been sitting for longtime 6 to 7 years should i do a rebuilt or just add new oil and try it, rebuilt the clutch the engine does crank tried with rachet, do yu think the seals and gaskets are ok?? Thoughts and comments plz

Flush and replace all fluids, clean carb thoroughly, new plug and fire it up! The rest should become obvious if there is an issue.

My Honda Ranchers starter has a slow crank. I wouldn’t diagnose it as a dead battery, the neutral like isn’t dim or off at all, and I’ve ran it multiple times this previous week with it slowly cranking and then firing right up, i let it sit a few days because I couldn’t get it out of the garage these past couple days, now the starter is still slow but it won’t fire, I have no clue what the problem is, any help?
