My eldest was like this. I fought him for two years before we took some time to deschool (he was already at home but I was still trying replicate school). We've unschooled since and now my kids read & write for pleasure, one even asked me to please print some maths worksheets for them a few hours ago. He sat there and went through them for fun! ❤ They spend all day creating or playing the most imaginative games. I do "strew" a lot of opportunities (books, magazine subscriptions, creative writing prompts, maths games & activities, lots of art supplies & days out) but they are free to choose what they engage with. I think some kids will push back against any thing they feel they *must* do. Since I've relaxed, they have too and they see it all as fun now. I'm no longer stressed like I was... just the occasional panic I'm sure all home-ed mums get 🥴 but overall it's made for a much happier environment all round.

Thank you for sharing. I am at a point where I need to just let her go with the flow. I love her creativity and the games she comes up with. Removing the "must" is helpful.....and now I have to remember that with getting her to clean her room too 😉

My son had learning challenges and didn't like schoolwork. Sometimes we would try several things, and I would ask him which one he hatred the least. At least he still had a choice, and knew that I was rooting for him. When one of my boys was older I would ask him, what do you need to do to make yourself do this? Do you want me to remind you, do it with you or something else? We would brainstorm ways to make it happen. Sometimes thinking about how he overcame a similar problem would give us an idea.
