Once again Peter’s Railway has demonstrated that engineering is amazing! Thanks for the video! I would be very interested to see the calculations that go into resolving the components of forces in 3D.
@PetersRailway4 ай бұрын
Thank you for the lovely comment! In fact the calculations for resolving forces (or anything really) into two directions at right angles to each other (EG up/down and left/right) is simple. You just take a right angle triangle with the long side as being the resultant force or velocity etc, and then the two other (orthogonal!) sides are just sines and cosines of the angle. 3D, you just do it again, but it does get more tricky to visualise. If you google how to resolve forces, you will find some diagrams which show it much better than words... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. I grew up reading all of your books and they really inspired and educated me, and I hope to become an engineer one day. It was a hit of nostalgia when I discovered your channel, and I'd love to see more stuff from you. All of your videos are really well done, almost like small documentaries, but still have a lovely personal tone to them. I think that anything you put out on here will be really appreciated by your fans, and all railway enthusiasts of all ages.

Thank you for your lovely comment, it is very much appreciated! If the books have done anything to encourage people to go into engineering, then I am so pleased. I hope you do become an engineer, it is a fascinating life. I will try to make some more videos this summer!... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris.

The victorians used to grow marestail on railway embankments to stabilise them. It's a terrible plant , amazing root system, and speads like wildfire as my front garden can testify.

Probably too late now but geotextile (drainage) fabric layers as the embankment was built up. Used in small and large embankment projects. You have a nice railroad..

You are exactly correct! The trouble was that the heavy equipment is very seldom available to do railway work and there wasn't time to do this. Can you make a video about how to rescue a derailed engine please

A pond may look good, but then that embankment becomes a dam holding back a surprisingly heavy weight of water. Whatever you do, don’t let that water seep through!

It’s funny as me too I grew up on your books and 10 years later i’m looking to build a railway like this as well. I was going to use 5” but was wondering what gauge yours is as you never seemed to have mentioned it. Also, I can’t seem to find many manufacturers in the uk of these gauges especially of larger steam locomotives such as class a1, a3, 01 and 04 do you have any suggestions? Your Railway and books are an absolute inspiration and dream. Thanks
@charlieshobbies48523 ай бұрын
Could you also do a video on how to clean out bongo’s firebox?
@PetersRailway3 ай бұрын
Hi Charlie and thanks for your lovely message. The railway is 7.25” gauge, which works well on ground level. The biggest problem is space - for mainline type locos you want curves to be min 30 ft radius and 45ft is better. Gradients want to be less than 1 in 60 or you will have to haul very light trains! You are right, there are not many suppliers. Polly model engineering make good kits of simple engines. Then maxitrack make some finished smallish engines. Don’t go for something big and complicated, it’s much better to have something simpler which works properly!! Be very careful of second hand. There are some good dealers but some much less trustworthy. Best advice is to join a model engineering club and ask for help…. Hope that helps?? Chris

Yes, it is in the production pipeline for the summer….

Centrifugal force from the loco will push to the outside rail, therefore make the outside wider to counter this force
@PetersRailway4 ай бұрын
I think that the amount the outside rail can move is very small compared to the clearance between the rail gauge and the width between the flanges. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. Is it possible or pratical for you to turn the centre of the loop into a pond or dam?
@PetersRailway7 күн бұрын
Yes, that has been suggested as a cunning plan. However, there is a little pond at the top of the line already. Can you show what happens when a blowback happens
@PetersRailway2 ай бұрын
That's a really good idea, however I will have to work out how to make it work. Usually it happened when an engine went into a tunnel and the pressure must have increased at the chimney, blowing flames out of the fire hole door. We don't have a tunnel on the railway (and anyway it would be rather tall to allow me to fit in, so the effect would not really be the same) but maybe I can simulate it in some way to show what would happen. Give me a while!... Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS.
