I don't really get rust and water is usually easy to stay on top of. My some of my trees do get sunburn in the summer. Some don't. You learn a lot by experiencing and being really thorough in carefully observing your plants. The best way to see if a pot needs water... is to see how heavy it is.
@billclinton60404 жыл бұрын
In my very hot humid zone, fig rust was my big problem for years. I stupidly thought the problem was not enough water because our July/August temps hover in the high 90s with overnight lows in the 80s. And year after year, around August my quite large, in ground, black mission would drop all its leaves. This was always after the summer fig harvest which is ALWAYS exactly in mid-July (I can almost set my calendar by it), but it still stressed the tree. Then one summer, we had a deluge of rain during August, but it still dropped every leaf. That's when I knew I was dealing with fig rust. So I bought a copper based fungicide, and the next year was the first time it didn't drop all its leaves. I have since scaled back the use of the fungicide because I don't want a build up of copper in the soil. I am also implementing other strategies, but bottomline, the tree is doing fantastic now.

@YayoLife2 жыл бұрын
The problem I have is my location has so much rain in spring. And then when summer hits, BAM! Super hot. So either you prepare a soil for drainage and then have to. Water the tree everyday in summer, or you give it peat moss to absorb water and get root rot in spring and water less in summer.

My fig-copies planted in the shade are being destroyed by rust I believe, & the copies in full-sun & deep-mulched are doing amazing. I mostly use 2-4week-composted grass-clippings but when I've added wood-chips I find that mycelium/mushrooms seem to completely dry the soil right before they bloom, IDK how much it affects the plants but I do know it changes how the compost/soil absorbed water. This year the non-edible fungus in my garden bloomed multiple times for almost a month.

Definitely. With any disease more sunlight is key to dry the leaves quicker. The longer the leaves are wet, the better chance they have at spreading the virus.

Great info! Thank you so much. I have a cutting that i up potted. A week later it started developing yellowing on the outside edges of leaves. I couldn’t figure out if it was not enough or too much water. I figured it’s probably too much water. So I will wait till it droops leaves before I give it a drink.

You could have damaged the roots?
@davidnln98154 жыл бұрын
Ross Raddi I was very careful when I up potted to keep all of the roots intact. When I removed top layer of bark, the soil was very moist. My guess is it’s a combination of transplant shock and too much water. Removed some soil around the edges of the pot and placed paper towels at the bottom of the pot to wick out the excess moisture. With the temps of 100 I hope it will dry out the soil. Also, how long do you dry your cuttings before wrapping them in parafilm? I had few cuttings with molded tops under parafilm. Thank you!

Don't know what this is but I should of planted it when I planted the other one in the ground. I have a fungiside spray also and it says it kills 65 diseases. The problem with this type of video is this: the presenter assumes that his audience lives in more humid areas of the US, but millions of us live in the desert Southwest, like the desert region of southern California. Our soil dries out in one day! We can get drenched with a garden hose and our clothes are completely dry one hour later. If we followed the advice of water sparingly or providing full sun, our plants - even cacti - would become charcoal.
@nmnate4 жыл бұрын
I use extremely well draining soil in the desert. Probably 30-35% of my mix is coarse (#3 or #4) perlite. PS figs aren't cacti (ha!). If you think it's easy to overwater a fig, try keeping some succulents. :)

Hi Ross - thanks for the information, I have a couple of questions. My fig tree lives in a pot, in the house; the people who owned my house built a sort of solarium ( just 2 large skylights). the pot cannot be removed from where it is, they built the floor around the pot. I know it goes down about 18". So, it is very hard to tell how dry or wet it is, ANY SUGGESTIONS. I have taken care of it for 23 yrs. and I didn't ever expect to get figs. We have had only a few, at 2 different times. What should I feed it? It is about 15 ft. tall, only the top 2 ft. is leaves.

I don't think it's the peat moss for store bought plants.. It's more that they use low quality wood chips (small little splinters) with the peat moss. So the peat keeps the water, but the wood splinters then begin to decompose. Nurseries use terrible soil for anything longer than 8-9 months. Peat moss would be great with half pumice/sand mixture. Would hold and release moisture with inorganic materials that will not decompose.

I'm currently having an issue with fig rust spreading quickly on the leaves. I've traced it back to the night time temperatures dropping to the 40s and 50s which leads to all the leaves being completely covered in condensation for the entire night until the morning. I liked your video very much. In spring I trimmed a bit the ends of the branches of my 3-year old Chicago fig tree. The cuts were green, healthy and I covered each of them with the thick paste that is used in the orchards. I live in zone 7b. As usual, we had hot days in April and cold, close to 35 F. In May only tree branches (secondary branches) gave some growth, all the other big branches shrunk and turned dead. Why this happens and what is to be done to save the tree? Should all these thick branches be cut off? Please make a video how to prune fig trees and provide maintenance to avoid such loss. Thank you.

I have a question ... My fig cutting has not grown more than 6 inches on 3 new branches this entire growing season. Originally in early spring I was over watering and killed about 5 plants, so reduced it to about once every 3-4 weeks. The potted figs are sitting on my driveway in full sunlight (from 11am on) and watering them about once a week about 1 cup of water. I fertilized it 3 times this spring/summer. I had left out of state for 1 month and no one watered them... now out of 15 I have 3 left ... everything else is literally crisp dry. Any suggestions? Location Northern Philadelphia.

My suggestion is your soil. Make sure you have plenty of fertile soil. Make sure you keep it watered. But not too much. Once it takes, it will be wonderful. Remember, I am in the south. It is summer every day. However, there is really only one fig season. I would suggest you start it in the house in a sunny window. Watch it so it doesn’t dry out too much. Talk to it. Love it. Once it’s warm, move the pot outside to get used to being outside. Best wishes to you

He was killed, and three days later He rose from the dead. Forty days later He ascended into heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father. He is returning very soon, but before He does, Satan, the devil, is coming to pretend to be Jesus. Satan is an angel, and he will have certain supernatural powers with which to try to fool everyone. He will, for example, be able to make fire come down from heaven in the sight of men. He will only be on earth a short time before the real King of Kings, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, returns. When the real Jesus comes we will all be transformed into our spiritual bodies at the same moment. Jesus came to offer forgiveness of sins and eternal life to anyone who believes and calls on His precious name. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; - Romans 3:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. - Romans 6:23 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. - John 3:16-18 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. - Isaiah 43:10

Not useful at all. I don't need a lecture on being a "green thumb." My brown turkey fig tree had dead leaves on one side, and the whole branch died. I cut that off, and more and more are dying; the bark is splitting. So sad; this is a 15-year-old tree, and I haven't changed anything. The figs are no longer suitable to eat. I was looking for helpful advice.
