Living in my childhood home, I have a giant fig my dad planted around 1958. It took a beating in 2 recent freezes here in SE Texas. 2 weeks after a hurricane we had a lot more rain and I noticed standing water around the fig. It wasn’t producing much after the first freeze and I had it pruned back quite a bit. After this past winter I wasn’t even sure it was alive. Then as weather started getting warmer it was growing like asparagus. Shoots coming up all over the area. I dug some up to plant in another area and gave some to friends and family. I need to move more of it as I don’t think it’s in a good spot anymore. Houses that weren’t there in the 50’s are blocking most of the sun. My kids and grandkids are enjoying growing some of Papaw’s figs. I hope we get enough for a few jars this year.

At our other house we had a couple of fig trees. I don't know what kind because we dug them up from beside a friends trees. One of them I planted too close to the house and the branches ended up brushing against the roof (after about 10 years). The trunk was about 8 inches around and I had my husband cut it off at about the 4 ft mark. It came back and in two years it was hitting that roof again. I had one on the other side of the house (not so close) and when it was 3 or 4 years old a tree fell on the house (a large tree) and the branches of that tree were all tangled in the fig tree and my husband and friends were trying to get the tree off the house but he was trying to save the fig tree too and I finally told him to just cut down the fig tree as he had enough problems already and I would live without a fig tree. He cut if off at about a foot and the thing still grew again the next year just fine.

Had brown turkey fig that died back to the ground every year. It would be 7 to 8 foot tall by September with a few figs that the birds got to before me.

Oklahoma> that last freeze approx a month or so ago got my fig. Along with the apricot & plum. Always gets the apricot. Just waiting till I know(ha) no more freezes & I’ll cut it back. I’ve been bringing all the fruit trees back down to a manageable size since I was gone for 5 years & my daughter didn’t know. Funny kinda, I had a columnar apple that had lost its tag & I couldn’t for nothing figure out what kind of apple I had put in. Finally found the sell slip. It’s gonna take a couple more years to straighten that one out. I know the neighbors must wonder????? What in the world I’m doing. That poor tree🥹

A lot of times some of mine looked dead but new leaves came up from the root. I guess the top growth gets killed but new growth comes from what was protected beneath the mulch. Don't throw them out too soon, give them time to regenerate.

I did that to our tangerine tree. All the fruits were getting only so big, on new growth at the ends of older growth. Took off a lot of the old growth like you did, and had a lot of new sprouts/leaves. But then the tree just went down a few weeks after that and that was it. Probably something underground.

I planted my White Marseilles tree (purchased from you) right into the ground late summer without potting up first. It survived the winter unprotected and is budding out now. Also I too am a fan of Hollier and might put mine in the ground here in Virginia 8a. One last thing - my Dad drove up from Georgia and gave me a Dawgs bucket. It’s about to get real now. God bless and Go Dawgs!

It looks good the big pruning the hard pruning the massacre of a pruning, but it was much needed. Let me tell you I did the same thing to my pear tree. It’s 22 years old. I planted it when it was itty-bitty after the passing of my mother well it got to be so big. It was getting hard to harvest the pairs up high. It was taller than my roof line on my house so we did a butchering of a pruning and I was worried, but I read all the research did on my research had every limb cut at a 45° and it is beautiful. I will get Paris this year and I get as much because it’s seen of the first year after that Heart pruning in the winter but I’m gonna get pears now before I did this massive pruning. We were getting up to 300 pounds in pairs maybe not this year but maybe next year we’ll get that again so I knew that your fig tree would come back. It’s got well established roots, so then roots come right back up and give you growth and everything else.🍐👍🏽

Didnt have time to propagate my small one branch 3 foot brown turkey fig tree. It started to leaf out already. I want to take at least three 6" cuttings off it and plan to take the 2 leaves off the top before I do. They should do ok right, Compared to taking cutting while they were dormant during winter.

Yes just make sure they don't dry out as the leaves will evaporate more water.

I have a three year old fig tree… it came from a big box store and I have no idea of the variety. It was growing pretty good but never produced a single fig! We had a hard freeze this past winter in middle TN and when spring came it looked totally dead! Then new growth started coming out from the base so I cut off all of the dead stalks. Hoping for just a few figs this year! Do I need a pair to produce fruit?
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 13 күн бұрын
You don't need a another fig tree, assuming it's a "common fig" variety. If you bought it at a box store, it likely is.

I lost at least 3 - maybe 4 this year (depending on what sprouts back from the ground) as well Travis. And I also have one tree in particular that has an enormous amount of suckers around it every year. I can't cut the suckers back fast enough, so I think this year I'm going to cover around the tree with the black plastic and then heavy pine chips. Does that sound like a plan to you?
