Fun fact: the “4” in “Type 4” is a subtle nod to how much horsepower it is making.

Get vacuum gauge and check that the throttle s are not sucking at idle. Also as you adjust timing, ALWAYS adjust the idle mixture right after. It will need only fine adjustments as you proceed.

Did you ever figure out this issue? I am curious to know what was the cause of so.

Yes I did resolve it. The Bentley manual is only good for factory carbs. I didn’t realize and had the throttle blade gap open too much. Newer carbs don’t require the gap they are designed run with blade closed which forces the engine to run on the idle circuit properly. I closed the blades tight and went out a turn and a bit and problem solved.

First, set the initial idle speed screw to about 1/2 turn from fully closed and NEVER TOUCH THEM AGAIN. Use your idle MIXTURE screws to set the idle. Then worry about synchronizing them once you get a stable idle using timing and mixture only. The throttle should barely need adjustment on either one. Re check all the ignition basics and fuel basics. Too much pressure is the typical problem. Make your not above 2 PSI.

Also basics means float height, needle valve opening not sticking, gasket condition. Any orifices blocked by the gasket?

Thanks for the suggestions. We eventually figured out how to get the bus running correctly from advice from a few friends. Your advice was exactly what they told us to do as well and it worked out great. I was impressed with the CB Solex carbs. The bus ran great but we sold it and is off to a new owner.

Hey, any chance you can take a photo of how you mounted the bell crank? I think I have it in the right place but when I try to connect the left linkage arm it is too long. I can't find any photos online. Thank you.

I have looked through old video and pictures and I can’t find any to share. However, I did have the same issue you have with one arm being too long. I had to carefully double nut and cut one or both linkage arms to get them the correct length. Sounds like you are having the same issue. If you bought the kit from CB, give them a call, as they will k ow for sure too.

@@curiousdude3196 Thanks for getting back to me. I did find a photo on The Samba and I am installing the bell crank correctly. Looks like I have to cut the linkage arm as well. And possibly extend the throttle cable! Thanks again.

Do you have the break booster connected to the carbs without the check valve?

Thanks for the reply. I ended up figuring it out. Turned out that the throttle blades were just a tiny bit too open preventing the carb from running on the idle circuit. Once I adjusted everything properly it ran great.

Do you have a carb balancer?

Yes and they are synchronized close enough I’m surprised I’m having so much trouble. I have a post on the samba about it with some ideas to follow up yet. Thanks for the link.
