These folks arent prepared for mountain life. I turned 77 yesterday and still remember my Austrian grandmas rule to be stocked with firewood for 2 yrs and having a full pantry for at least 6 month. We used to be snowed in for weeks every winter, back in the days. I can just hunker down, I cook and eat ...even if a blizzard would last for 3 month, I wouldnt get in trouble at all. Sorry folks, you ll learn it the hard way

Just curious, how does one get a two year supply of firewood? Seems like you'd need a giant expensive warehouse to store that much, then again I have no idea.

The one and only grocery store is totaled. Groceries cost too much for people to stock up on a weeks supply or more at a time. It's been a week and roads are still not plowed and they have nowhere to go buy food. I know it sounds simple to those not up there or those whom have never lived up there. My mom has been there 34 years and this magnitude of snow has never happened. They are not young and can't just shovel 7+ feet of snow that is covering every inch of their property let alone they weren't able to get our their front door until yesterday. People are stranded with no access to basic supplies 🙄

That's just basic mountain survival living. But I still hope everyone makes it out OK. A SIDE BAR - And if you're just driving up for the day or weekend. You should have everything you would need to survive for 1 week if you got stranded. In the mountains during winter, you never know what is going to happen the next hour. Good Luck

They need medications and may be having medical emergencies.

Buffalo, Ny here, in my many decades of experience, you always make sure you keep emergency supplies and rations in your home. Furthermore if you can’t ration what you should have, that’s a failed choice. You chose to live in the mountains, I am jealous of your snow. I had nearly 7 feet with snow drifts 30’ tall. If you sit in your home waiting for the snow to stop before you shovel, you’re ignorant and deserve to be stuck. For the last several days, you should’ve been shoveling every few hours. If you can’t open the door, climb out a window, or jump out a window. Figure it out, you chose to live there. Buffalo was so feckless 47 people died. I hope there aren’t as many dumb people living there.

I know of this community and the wonderful people that live there. One gentleman in particular that has multiple businesses across from the grocery store. I just hope he and family are safe. He has lived there for many years…one would think that with that mountain living knowledge and even with the short notice and severity exceeding normal that they might have put a little extra in the pantry as far as food. If I had to guess that community has grown a lot in the past year and with that comes inexperienced mountain dwellers. What I find odd is why they are holding people back from coming together from the outside and letting them in to assist. Yes have a plan and attack. Send drones with emergency medical supplies. Heck if they can use drones to drop drugs over the border they can find a way to get medicine or some type of food. Or drop from helicopter. A lot of those homes have multiple stories go higher and out a window. I know the storm dumped tons of snow but it would seem to me that as it came down that’s when you start making sure you have at least one clear exit. Those that live there part time didn’t have that option. Just hope their homes hold up. The gas thing is the scariest. Time to call The Diesel Brothers to lead the rescue! State of emergency with national guard isn’t a handful of retirees with shovels! Crestline isn’t that big…let those people in that are waiting in line. Power in numbers. That help sign in the snow…brilliant way to catch attention. They heard you Crestline! Stay safe!

I am relatively new to Crestline. This is my forth winter. Thankfully we missed the thanksgiving storm and black out of 2019. I learned quickly to stock up with three to four weeks of food, wood and to shovel snow daily. People who did not bother shoveling until the sun came out were not bothering to look outside and or were too lazy. If anything many were complaining of being bored! My heart goes out to the handicapped and feeble, but winter in the mountains is no place to be if you cannot fend for yourself and have to rely on others. Those who did not stock up on food claim they did not have the means. I feel sorry for them, but I do not understand how they could not have purchased extra canned food, rice and beans over the year in annual preparation for winter. They could have even gone to the local food bank. Most locals spoke of the mountain being due for a big snow fall, but many did not bother to prepare for it. Reminds me of the story of the grass hopper who played during the summer and made fun of the ants hard at work preparing. 🙏💕🌈.

What I don't understand is why Bear Mountain residents, who were down in the valley, are desperate to get back up the mountain right now and past the road blocks on the highway. I think they opened the roadblock though. Why drive into a catastrophe, unless you are trying to save someone?

Maybe they need to shovel the snow off their roof so it doesn't collapse. Or to check that their water pipes didn't freeze then burst inside the house? Or make sure their gas pipes have not been severed and blow up the house...which happened in Lake Arrowhead a couple days ago. Maybe they need to check for broken windows, leaks, and spoilage from the power outages. Lots of variables.

Does Southern California not experience earthquakes? I grew up in Northern California and was taught to always have emergency food supply on hand that didn’t require cooking. My point is, this blizzard or snow storm was an anomaly and can’t be planned for, but if you stocked your home with emergency food supply for earthquake preparedness, you would’ve had food to eat in an emergency. And let’s not forget the pandemic when there was fear of a shortage of food in grocery stores. Even now that I live in New York, I still maintain a supply of canned goods as emergency food supply. I always replenish it when it gets low (gotta use it before it expires after all). I hope these people get the help they need soon! I can’t imagine how scared they must be. I would be concerned! But lets learn from this experience and make sure we all have emergency food supplies.

Here is what I am hearing from friends (Sierra, Northern CA). Some rural roads are completely closed do to hundreds of downed trees that are frozen into the snow. There is no way to plow with the trees and powerlines down. The power is out and many propane tanks have run out with no chance of refilling. No fuel for generators so no water. This is a rural area with very difficult access. In the Sierra they have had over 40' of snow with another 5' coming over the next week. It takes Buffalo NY 5 years to get 45' of snow.

Some are, but if you take nothing else away from all this, if you are an adult have a couple weeks worth of food stocked up. Disasters happen every where and even 2 weeks worth of food can be stretched to a month in an emergency. If they had a head start on stocking up, then they could have easily hoarded some tap water. I live across the country and heard about the snow coming the week before. Some in the comments are heartless and I'm sure some people just couldn't be prepared.

Living in the mountains away from urban centers means being prepared for all weather events and for the ability to survive weeks without power or the ability to travel. Having battery & generator backup/fuel is essential. At the very minimum you can at least power your refrigerator, well, and the fan that blows air through/around your wood burning stove. Candles and lots of freeze-dried food. Lifestraw to at least be able to hydrate if you don’t have a well. Sitting around and complaining nobody is coming to rescue you is a flawed plan. Probably shouldn’t be living there if that’s the best you can muster. I feel bad for the children and pets subjected to the stupid decisions made by people who should know better.

Because this is just snow. I would not recommend sticking around when a fire, earthquake or flood shows up that's when you have to handle life at a level beyond a small snow fall.
