Hey guys! Lots of comments here I just want to repeat what I wrote on FB last night to address some comments about our campaign: 1) Geek and Sundry (and Tabletop) up until now was funded by KZbin's original channel initiative, which is not continuing to go forward anymore. We have been talking to a bunch of partners and are excited about some of our options to continue G&S as a company, but Wil (and we) were passionate about being able to keep Tabletop on schedule to release more episodes this year, and stay independent of influence to change the show for sponsor/commercial reasons. That is why we are fundraising like this. 2) This show is a standout for a reason: We pay professional people to make it. It's polished and stands next to TV show quality because we wanted to make something long-lasting, and impact in a big way, like a TV show when we conceived it. To put it in perspective: The average 30 second commercial you see on TV? Costs 1-3 million dollars. EACH. The average 1/2 hour comedy? 2-3 million dollars. Shows like Game of Thrones? 7-9 million dollars. PER EPISODE. We are doing a minimum of fifteen, 30 minute shows for a fraction of ONE TV SHOW. If you put it in that perspective, we are definitely not paying people professional rates to work on it. I do a lot of low budget web videos here (to help subsidize shows like Tabletop, actually), and I think the ones that last beyond that moment of consumption are the ones that have budgets, that people tend to enjoy over and over. My goal always has been to show the established TV world that people can work outside the system and compete with their business, Tabletop is our best example of that, just like The Guild before us. We are doing this show for the minimum we can do it and keep up what we have established before us, I promise. 3) You do not have to donate, we appreciate it so much if you choose to do so, and understand if you don't. It will still be free and watchable by you if we make our fundraising goal on KZbin. If anyone has any other questions I'll check this thread back to answer more. Until then, thank you and play more games!

Thanks Felicia for the wonderful summation! To add on to your point, I know that Wil understandably didn't want to seek funding from game-makers themselves, as he doesn't want to get into a 'Pay-To-Play' model. Which ties into the underlying point of this campaign - finding a way to keep TableTop going with the same Production value, without outside parties taking control/ownership of the show... Which is why it makes sense that fans are the best option to pursue - because we already love the show as is, and thus I was happy to contribute some money so I can see this cool content continue onwards :)

Supporting Wil Wheaton's funding effort for Tabletop Season 3. Not really into crowdfunding all that much at the moment, but in this case it's a proven product with a reliable team behind it, so I have no qualms pledging to this. Tabletop is in my opinion extremely valuable. It's done more for board-gaming than anything else in recent memory, I think it's vital for introducing large audiences to the hobby and showing people why its such a great social activity. As for the amount of money required, as Felicia already mentioned, $500,000 for an entire series is a drop in the bucket compared to regular TV shows and these guys offer TV quality without the dumbing down and corporate nonsense involved in creating actual TV. 15 episodes at $500k? That's $33k an episode and honestly that is not a lot of money in production land. To put things into perspective, Polaris failed GAME_JAM blew $400k in ONE DAY on an event that will never be aired. Obviously not the best example since it was a goddamn disaster as many of you are aware, but it really makes it obvious that just because something is "on KZbin" doesn't mean it can be made for $100 and a bag of White Castle. If you want TV level quality, there is a cost attached to that. Anyway, I'm rambling. Point is it's a great show, I had a blast attending it and saw how much goes into making an episode. I'm personally supporting this without hesitation.

Nagi2100 IMO, that is what is so interesting about this new age of Internet Entertainment. The traditional model in the USA is corporate sponsorship and commercial time paying for the shows. Are there other self sustainable business models that will work? I tend to agree with you that crowdsourcing the funds will only work to a point and in the following years it may not work. Perhaps the thought is once a enough viewers are obtained for Table Top, the merchandising of its own products will fund future seasons. Or maybe, with enough viewers, the KZbin model of funding will work. I don't know the numbers needed, but I'd guess that 500,000 or so people will need to socially share the episodes before the show can fund itself. I wouldn't be surprised if Felicia Day (or others involved) has spoken to these issues. And if they haven't, I'd be interested to know what the current thoughts are. It's pretty obvious that no one really knows what will work and they are trying new things.

Thanks Wil! TableTop has helped our adult family grow closer. We used to play growing up, but as we got get older, we just didn't make time for family fun anymore. Since TableTop came online, you have inspired us so that we now have regular game nights and it's all down to your show. Unfortunately, my father is some freak game genius who seems to win every new game we play. It's a bit frustrating, he's like the rainman of board games! We keep hoping it is some fluke... Anyway thanks again, we'll keep watching and keep "playing more games!"

Would like to point out, that people who work on this needs to get PAID! Do you expect them to work for free? If you've been enjoying TableTop and the high quality of production we've come to expect, do you really want it to go back down to "a video camera, Wil's kitchen and editing by a amateur?" You say now, but if they really do that, those who are complaining will prob be the first complain about the "low quality".

Count me in! Tabletop is yet another (and a major) example of the awesome shows on Geek & Sundry that's really helped me rekindle not only my love of gaming, writing and all things geeky, but it's made me realize I can be myself and enjoy these things that I love. Being a geek isn't something to be made to feel bad about, it's a thing to be proud of. I notice a few people asking why they need the money, or why they don't get it from Google. As Wil mentions in the video itself, it takes a lot of people to make the show at the production quality they're aiming for (and that the viewers are accustomed to). They might not get face time on camera, but the folks behind the scenes do a ton of work. Also, by not getting corporate funding and going independent they get to make the show that they and the viewers want, not the show that a financial backer might obligate them to make.

I guess some folks are disconcerted by the $500,000 amount. But if you were to do a compare and contrast with other studio-level content, the proposed TableTop budget is actually comparatively conservative. In essence, the budget that G&S is asking for is actually far smaller than the mainstream machine. Numbers as follows: $33,333 - Average per episode cost of a TableTop S3 episode ($500,000 / 15 eps) $100,000 to $500,000 - Average per episode cost of a Reality Television Program $1,500,000 - Average per episode cost of a Network Sitcom If you look at it in those terms, it's actually quite amazing that G&S is able to put out network-quality content when their budget is a fraction of what mainstream networks routinely spend. Because just like network shows, TableTop has costs for transportation, cameras, locations, sound design, set-design, crew-members, craft services, post production, marketing, fulfillment/taxes, partnership fees, etc. When you divide that money across a bunch of people, and months of work, and a spectrum of subsidiary expenses? You'll probably find that at an individual level, no-one is getting particularly rich off of TableTop. To make the show, they're working for lower rates than the mainstream would normally pay.

Thank you for the insightful posting. As you said, I'm not sure that everyone truly realizes how many slices there are in a pie-chart when you're creating a pro-level production effort like TableTop. It's not as though Wil Wheaton's going to be swimming through Scrooge McDuck's money vault, because that money has to stretch across a lot of people and 100's of hours of work.

Hyde1980 Casey Alcoser thanks so much for the kind replies! The other nuance that folks don't realize is that G&S used to be funded on a year-by-year basis by the Google/YT Original Content initiative. That funding was essentially a 'loan' as Google would absorb back the Ad revenue that G&S generated, to recoup the money that Google originally provided. But now the landscape has changed, and that funding is no longer being provided. So G&S has to explore other options. Felicia has a lovely summation of it all in the reply section over on her Facebook page.

Really excited for season 3! Thanks to shows like Table Top my teenaged nephews feel like its ok being themselves. When they see people like Will Wheaton, Felicia Day, ...etc, being gamers and a little nerdy, it makes those insults from other kids unimportant. Seeing people who are funny, self confident, and that they think are cool enjoying games, and sharing interests that they have make them feel more confident in expressing interests that aren't mainstream. I couldn't think of a KZbin show that I would rather give my money to.

Two things immediately came to mind when I saw this... 1) Rule #1 of the Internet... Don't read the comments! 2) Fuck you, take my money! Now, I know when we are talking about something like G&S (or any other professional channel for that matter) it's not as simple as just not reading the comments, but the intent remains the same IMO. The Internet to me is a magnifying glass. If you are feeling generous, you will generally err on the side of being overly so when interacting with people on the web but if you are an ass-bag, or even just having a bad day, the Internet allows you to take it out on people/things with zero concerns of consequence. Couple that with the feeling of entitlement that sites like KZbin have fostered over the years and you are bound to get an overwhelming amount of naysayers complaining. Also - A lot of people have been burned by crowd-funded projects lately which doesn't help. All that being said, I saw the $500k and thought they were being overly conservative. I honestly don't think most people have any clue how production quality costs exponentially more the better and better it gets, and let's be honest TableTop is a Network TV quality level show in terms of it's production value! Anyway, even though I only watch about 3/4 of the episodes each season I have pledged my $ to help with the effort and I have no doubt it will get funded. Part of me considered dropping the major cash to play a game with Wil at SDCC or to attend the party but I have issue with paying for "celebrity experiences" (I have misguided faith that one day I will manage to sit down at a table due to the power of my sheer awesome alone)... so a smaller amount it was! Viva la Geek and Sundry!

people are saying you are stupid to expect so much, and that it's not worth this much, but $135K on the first day of funding would beg to differ. Selling out of the 5k tier on day one, also a good sign. Also, I would like to second the "if you make enough money then you do an episode in full trek gear." idea. Sounds amazing and the child that still holds a large portion of my soul longs for it.

I'm guessing that the people providing negative comments (i.e. the "greedy" comments) here don't know that: a) their current source of funding no longer exists (KZbin original channels) and b) the level of work / expense that goes into creating something of Tabletop's quality The production level (lighting, staging, etc.) is top-notch. There is a ton of editing that is done on the show from tossing in sound bites and game-specific effects, to doing the detailed explanations of the games that are being played and the interview segments, all the way down to the seemingly small things like showing the results of a die-roll or the cards that are currently being played. All of those require a bunch of work to actually happen. I think the problem might be just how effortless they make it all seem. Take a quick look at the credits of a Tabletop episode. There are nearly 40 credited people, not including Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, or their guests, that are involved. That's not a trivial number and when you have that many people working on something as complex as this, costs can add up pretty quickly. My guess is that at the $500k goal amount, it would probably *cost* them money (or quality :( ) to produce the season between the ~7% indiegogo + paypal/CC fees (~$35k chunk) and taxes that have to be accounted for. I've always liked the Tabletop folks (Thanks for 2 great seasons!) and I hope that they hit all their stretch goals and then some. Despite not being a huge fan of crowdsourcing, this is definitely the best route both for keeping the show true to the first two seasons and not having to either inundate it with advertisements or completely sell it out. Because of that, I'll happily make this the exception to the rule. It definitely seems as though the Geek & Sundry crowd can be counted on not to run off with our money, considering how much passion they have for their projects. Most importantly though: Play more games Wil! (Especially that RPG :) ) TL;DR Worth backing if you can. Play more games!

I love Tabletop Wil, it's a great addition to any week. But what I'm looking forward to most is the $1,000,000 goal that get's us the full length RPG campaign. Although I doubt the necessity of that much money to afford it [I have seen many good games such as Acquisitions Inc. at PAX, Yogsquest, and Dungeons and Drogans [though they play over skype so you don't really see them all sitting around a table It started as a group doing audio recordings of their sessions, and just uploading them]] The PAX games might not be the best example, because a lot of money goes into them, but even something more amateurish would be fine with me and probably a lot of other people. There's a lack of long-running RPG stuff online, and the closes we get now is the stuff on the Wizards youtube channel. Anyway, I hope you meet your goals [especially the one that gets us full length RPG campaign show] and I'll look to dig deep and probably make a donation to help you guys along the way.

The great thing about kickstarter projects is that its all optional. You don't need to pay anything so personly I really don't see a need to get upset about this. I truly think that we'd all prefer Will and Felicia to have free reign over this rather than some sponsor telling them what to do. They know what to do. Gues I can spare a few euros for what's going to be like 10 hours of entertainment or such? 15 episodes at least as well as blooper reals and maybe an extended play version or two.. Looks like a lot of quality entertainment, and considering theres already two seasons to watch, it's not a vague promise of something good. If you liked the first two seasons, I'd see no reason why a third would be any different. Kudos for having the bravery to do things the hard way once more!

It's pretty evident that those complaining about the cost have no idea what goes into actual production. The guests have to be paid for their time/travel. The crew are humans who live in a very high cost-of-living area and can't be expected to just donate their time and energy for free. Equipment costs tons of money. And for those of you who expect Wil or Felicia to use their own money, you really need to understand that they have already put time and hard work into G&S. Organizing even a small podcast can be stressful, so imagine what it takes to build a network/company. Asking them to spend their own money (which I highly doubt would be enough) is absolutely ridiculous. If I were watching cable, I'd be paying a huge cable bill to companies I don't care about. It's not going to hurt me to chip in $5 for something that has already given me countless hours of entertainment. QQ elsewhere.

9 days in and you've already exceeded the goal....well done! :D Also is there a possibility of doing an episode with you guys playing the Game of Thrones board game? Would be great to see and of course with season 4 now here it's very topical

Almost as impressive as the guy who went out to run errands and came home less than three hours later and had several times his goal. Kickstarter and the like is a great way to get out from under a corporate thumb. Though I do have to say Microsoft was surprisingly open and laid back with The Guild.

I am definitely gonna take part in this, but I do have one question: concerning the signed game tier. Would it be possible to supply a list of games so one can ensure s/he gets a game that s/he doesn't aready own? I don't mind G&S choosing, I just would prefer a game I don't have already.

All of you people who are talking about Will being greedy clearly know NOTHING about what it takes to make a high quality show. It takes dozens of people dozens of hours to produce something the quality of Tabletop, and you can't expect them all to do it for free. Its probably cost more than 500k for the first two seasons, but they've had Google funding/providing equipment which is why they havent needed to crowd source

Based on how fast the $1000 and $5000 ones went, I'm pretty sure that with a quick tour (Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, NYC, Boston, LA, Seattle), you could pay for the show by selling "play with Felicia and Wil" tickets, then selling off the games.

Wil Wheaton, I love your show and have been a long term appreciator of your work. I, unlike some other assholes posting below understand the need for funding to make a well produced TV show work. I also know that you're not as wealthy as people posting on here seem to think you are. I've just left my job and am surviving on savings while I develop my own small business, so my money is tight but I'm enough of a fan that I've invested $15 in your campaign so that I can keep enjoying watching your show for years to come. You're the man Wil, don't let these overentitled bullies get you down.

Well just assuming that Will is a SAG member and as a producer will run an union shop. So $25,000 of which 75% is used to film or $18,750.00. On Air Talent will cost at 4 hour performer rate (guessing here) at $396.00 x 4 is $1584.00 for on air talent. Writers fees will be $350.00 for 2 minutes with $175.00 each minute for the 28 others is $350.00 + $4900.00 = $5,250.00 taken off the WGA site section New Media Productions Derivative of All Other Types of Programs. Directors pay is negotiable but looks like $2000.00 area with a 3 day prep time which has got to get the pro's laughing. The studio rental ($1,200 per day) and the Equipment rental $1,200 per day. So after all that you have $7,516.00 to pay the additional crew of twenty people (not counting interns), catering (Union shop so it is a must) and transportation. This information from just Googling a little on a very complicated business. The writing fee seems high but Union is Union. And to top it off if Mr Wheaton gets his $750,000 by going over $500,000 it increases cost on writing and Directors ect by !0% or so per episode. Interesting suddenly the budget is tight. I wonder what the time frame is? 10 weeks with 20 studio days? Fascinating!

Looking forward to season 3

The Dragon Age and Fiasco episodes has already helped the pen and paper RPG hobby a lot by showing how available and social it really is. Now with the RPG-spinoff I can see Tabletop almost single-handedly revive what some naysayers claim to be a dying hobby. I salute you Felicia and Wil :)

I think you guys should do an episode playing "Legends of Andor" It's a highly acclaimed game from Germany that doesn't just look gorgeous but also has terrific gameplay. It's a cooperative game that feels like it's always blindsiding you with monsters or difficult tasks. Only with amazing planning and teamwork will you beat the game.

I find it hard not believe that there has never been an offer for sponsorship from the publishers of the games they play on the show. It's crazy the effect that Table Top has on sales. I know my local game shop can never keep stocked of something the few weeks after it appears here. I mean the term "Wheaton Effect" is actually something that has been coined to describe it.

I don't understand all these people getting pissed at Geek and Sundry for doing this. It costs an insane amount of money to put that type of product together, and Google abruptly stopped paying for it. Table Top is polished as fuck and a wonderful example of what well-done web video can be. It's fine if you don't like the idea of paying for it, but don't bash good content providers.

I hope the 1M goal is met. TableTop and The Flog were the only reasons I subbed to G and S, but then Felicia stopped doing The Flog, so now it's really just this. Co-Optitude is okay, Felicia's still awesome and adorable, and Ryan's cool, but I've always just found Let's Plays with people who suck at the game insufferable for some reason, and they almost always suck. So, yeah, my sub kind of hinges on whether TableTop continues.
