what can I do to enhance my personal experience apart from work experience

You can read books that are relevant to the area you're interested in. You can also do online courses on FutureLearn or go to lectures / taster courses to get a better feel for what you will be taught.

Further reading is so great, watching online lectures and going out on courses as well

I am unfortunately unable to go to lectures or open days in person, will watching online lectures about the course and talking about be ok? Also, do I need to read a whole book on medicine, could I not just read bits, pieces and sections from uni websites, leaflets and other sources online which give me information about the course that I would like to do and then talk about it in my personal statement?

Online courses are great I'd recommend FutureLearn, the have some great online courses. I would recommend reading a whole book because it really supports your statement and show some independence and interest in some topics. It''s important that you not only have an understanding on not just the course but everything surrounding the subject. Chances are lots of people will be talking about bits from websites and leaflets and you need to come across as a bit more unique

I just googled for lectures and found the ones at King's, often societies such as 'The Royal Society of Medicine' always have some every week
