You can also do slow desensitization at home. My dog was afraid of nail trims, so i got a dremel to file them, but she was afraid of that too. So I started very slowly by setting the Dremel near her and giving her a favorite treat when she accepted it being there. Then I moved it closer and gave her a treat when she didn't react. After a few evenings of this, I put the Dremel on her foot without turning it on. When she accepted that, she got her fav treat. After a few evenings of this, I picked up her foot and placed the dremel on a nail without turning it on. Slowly but surely we worked up to the day I touched the dremel to her nail. And she was fine with it! The whole process from the first day to the day i could file all her nails without any issues was three weeks. Maybe everyone wouldn't have the patience for this, but we only did it a few minutes per night so it wasn't a long process in this regard. The best part of this is that my dog has zero fear of getting her nails done. She loves it because she knows it will be a calm, happy experience and she can trust nothing bad will ever happen. She also knows she will be getting her extra special treats. I highly recommend dog parents do this process if their dog is fearful. Just move slowly and do each tiny step for a couple of minutes each night. 😊

This was a great video! I would love to see more videos like this one because my dog is a difficult dog. She’s a sweetly, but she hates grooming. She doesn’t behave and has gotten mistreated. That’s why I decided to try to groom her myself. I appreciate your help! Thank you for all your tips.

Also, don't leave the room after you leash your pup to the table!! A local groomer my cousin uses left the room after leashing a dog to the table and the dog tried to jump off and passed away from being choked before she came back. She probably just didn't do the leash properly but let's play it safe!!

Your gentle patience is so lovely. My groomer suggested I get sedation pills for one of my dogs before I bring him back. I imagine they don’t have these methods figured out and his fear is causing them too much challenge. I may start learning how to do it at home myself so he feels safe and I can go slow.

Today was my third day in an intensive practical dog grooming course, where we mostly work with toy poodles. The problem comes when such a small poodle twists and turns as if its life depends on it, and in the grooming salon where I’m learning, they don’t use harnesses on the table-the dogs have to stay loose. It’s an expensive grooming salon that places a lot of importance on the cut and doing a good job, but it seems too risky to have a dog that struggles so much and wants to jump off the table. I try to stay calm and hold them gently but firmly (finding the balance is very difficult, and I hate holding dogs tightly, especially when they’re small), but it was impossible, especially since I had to work on the poodle’s coat with the blow dryer on my shoulder, a slicker brush in one hand, and holding the dog with the other. And working on the face is just impossible. I had to take a moment to cry. Another problem is when you’ve already straightened the poodle’s hair, and you try to pass the metal comb through to detangle it. When it doesn’t go through easily, I find it hard to gauge the right amount of force needed to detangle since it’s impossible not to tug, and almost all the poodles end up snapping, sometimes biting, or screaming due to the discomfort or pain. I know they can be very dramatic, but I also know the comb can hurt when it pulls (I would scream too, lol). Additionally, in this grooming salon, they have a hectic pace and work with a considerable number of dogs, so you have to be fast, efficient, and do it right, without a single knot. Every time a dog screams or snaps, it’s like a jumpscare for me; I reflexively pull my hands away, and my heart races. It’s my third day, and that’s normal, but I feel the pressure to get used to it as soon as possible. I know the key is to stay calm since dogs are extremely sensitive to our emotions, but I can’t seem to do it. Any advice?

This was especially helpful to me. I have 5 dogs of differing breeds & I'm elderly, so grooming is a challenge. The tips, tricks & tools you've shown would be very helpful. My Great Pyrenees, Jessie, is my biggest grooming challenge, especially when deshedding her. She's so patient about it & she always feels great afterwards, too! Thanks so much for your detailed advice. Just subbed.

Trimming a dogs nails and their face is the most difficult part for me. They constantly pull the leg when getting nails done, which does make me nervous because im worried ill cut the quick and then make them more fearful. Then with their face yhey constantly look everywhere but where need them to look. I get worried I'll cut a tounge, lip or even poke an eye. How do you keep your anxiety down so the dogs font pick up on it? I loved this video and more like this would be amazing and definitely appreciated 😁
@brandicooper2470 Жыл бұрын
Good ideas! Also, have to remember the mobility of the dog. Can you do the splits so make sure not to pull the leg too far out especially senior pets or dogs with bad knees or arthritis. Sometimes keeping the paw an inch or two above the table help keep the balance & not destroying your own body by certain moves to keep them to stand. Remember they are in the learning process so ya don’t want to do this all the time to keep your body strong. I also find the groomers helper CAN be dangerous especially if they try doing the alligator roll & can hurt themselves. Just need to be careful. There is a grooming loop/belt can use to help keep them standing but also think of older dogs with bad backs. If you have bulging disc in your back it can hurt them more. Great job

It always helps when there is 2 people.. but that is not most cases.. I know it's only me .. I don't have any trouble with body..but my dogs hate their legs and paws being touched with anything. i am on the floor shearing them. but I have large dogs 80 plus lbs ..I am going to try body harness and get a table. Hopefully this will help me get the paws and legs done..

Hello! I adopted a doodle from animal shelter. ‘Polly’. She has been thru a lot. I was going to try to groom her myself. But - she is TERRIFIED of electric clippers! She will let me brush her, give her a bath, even use scissors on her face. I have tried rubbing clippers around her turned off & done this over and over. But if it is urned on or other similar sound - she has a flight response! I have tried calming chews - nope. Vet prescribed Trazodone - nope. Any suggestions on how I can groom her? Should I try to use scissors all over her? … it would take a long time. Lol

I have a 5 month old toy poodle who has a different fur than other toy poodles. Her fur is not curly and is lesser than other toy poodles. This makes it difficult to shape her because the fur won't stay in place. She also hates her nails being done so thank you for this video but I really need tips on how to groom a less furry puppy pls! Also, is there a way to fix ugly clean faces? I really have no experience with grooming so I made it look quite bad on her face. SORRY IF THAT'S ALOT TO ASK 😅
