Helpful Tips for a Cruise with an Autistic Child.
For a passenger with autism spectrum disorder, a cruise can be a minefield. A ship's an unfamiliar place that's likely to be loud and full of surprises, with new experiences at every turn. Anything from crowded theaters to noisy muster drills could cause a meltdown.
But with careful preparation, a cruise can also make for a wonderful family vacation. Here's what you need to know about traveling with an autistic companion.
We are a fun family channel that does travel, feeding, and autism videos, showing what living with autism looks like!

I’m bringing my 4yo autistic/adhd son on his first cruise, this was very helpful!! Good tips & tricks.. I’m gunna get that lanyard too, but I wanted to share that my son wears a Medic Alert bracelet bc he’s a runner as well. It has his name, birthday, has his dx of autism adhd & echolalia on it as well as my phone number. I highly recommend that. Thanks again!

Thank you for this! I'm taking my 3yr old on his first cruise and I'm very nervous about the waiting as this is where meltdowns are most likely to occur, also he LOVES his tablet and we prob will not have very good streaming service onboard. I'm trying to mitigate these things by maybe NOT choosing a port activity (beach) where we have to get off the boat with everyone else and we can just do it a bit later and also downloading a bunch of shows plus I'm getting a few new toys I hope he will play with. How did ya'll do with structure since it's so different from what's at home or is that not that big of a deal for him? And were you able to take him to the little shows and things they have for entertainment on the cruise or did ya'll stick to the pool and room?

Thank you for these tips. We are currently considering a cruise with a large group and I question how much we will be able to participate in some of the group activities. How many hours do you have in a port? Are you able to return to the ship early if needed due to a sensory overload? The lanyard with information card is something I will definitely purchase from Amazon. I also dislike getting looks and worry because he can act on impulse and make a run for it. Other than your room, did you feel the ship was safe for your son?

Hello 👋🏾 If you don’t have help, you will not be able to participate in group activities on the ship 🚢 because your nerves won’t let you for safety reasons. I fill out the handicap form for that cruise line and request a wheelchair. The wheel chair takes you to your cabin and customs. Take the late check in because the rooms will be ready then. If you take an early check in make sure you have an emergency bag on you with pool clothing because it takes 2 hours for the rooms to be ready. The port wait depends on your check in time. I do both because I like the pool. Yes you can return to the ship at any time. You can also choose not to leave the ship. It was very safe the only thing that I made sure of was not to let him wander or run. But the railings where high and there was food choices and some ships our kids can make use of the kid’s daycare as long as you fill out the handicap card ahead and let them know he has autism. They will email you with all the things he can take part in. I hope this was helpful 🤗
