I live in Canada and make maple syrup. I split 40 cord a year with an axe. This video is good. Cut at the crotch for sure! Also wrap your wooden handle with hard fencing wire many times from the handle up about 6"-1', it keeps the handle from breaking. Also never lift your wood up to split it. Split it on the frozen ground or on a stump cut off at ground level. You get more help from gravity with every swing, more velocity. I use a maul only for an initial split on a big piece or with spruce and elm. Otherwise it is 5 lb axe with a long handle for me all the way. Get a longer handle, it gives you way more swing, more speed. I use the tip up method in front of my woodshed or where the big log lies. Tip up 30 pieces and split them all in a row. Lifting up so many big rounds is exhausting. Stop lifting your wood to split it. split it on the ground. I have considered getting a wood splitter for the harder to split woods but otherwise I am 2x as fast as a guy with a wood splitter. Any wood splitter. Wood processors are faster but they cost a lot more then my axe and then I would need to go workout afterwards. Splitting wood keeps me in top shape

Man I know that feeling of going out to clean up and throughout the day you start recognizing all the other things that need attention. Thanks for taking the time to make this tips video - I too prefer the bungee to the tires.

Thanks a bunch! I'm taking on splitting firewood for the first time ever this year! We bought a house in the woods, and the previous owner was nice enough to leave us with a bunch of cut wood, but it needs to be split to use in our wood stove. Can't wait to learn more from you!

While splitting, look for natural cracks forming on the ends and try and hit those first.

Thanks for sharing. I still split all mine by hand, we burn close 5 cords a year especially if northeast continues to be as cold as last year. I'm starting to save for a splitter but I figure at least I get a good workout! Thanks.

I see a lot of vids with folks using improper technique for the swing. You might cover that sometime. Also buying a splitter with a "table" is a good idea.

I still enjoy splitting wood by hand every now and then, however I use a five pound splitting axe. Because it is lighter than a maul you get more speed on the down stroke, which gives you the same splitting force, and its less taxing to work with.

Ray Duerksen, that's what I use too. I'm a small frame guy and I get the speed from my swing. I'll take my axe over other manual tools.

I watched a few of your videos and decided I would subscribe, as I really enjoyed the content and style of them. I was very surprised to see you only had 700 subscribers! Your content is very well put together, easily on par with youtubers with at least 100,000 subscribers. I hope someday you will make it to that point, and if you keep up the great work I'm sure you will! Great job, and good luck!

Yeah I don't mess around with trying to split crotches... if one gets into my pile somehow, I'll pull out the chainsaw to deal with it. Eric, I'd love to hear from you a bit more about your chainsaw practices, mainly: how many chains do you keep active? how often do you sharpen? how often do you flip your bar? have you ever had to replace a bar from wearing it down? I used to sharpen at every gas tank and flip the bar at the same time... now I've kinda gotten lazy and just sharpen when I feel it getting dull and the individual pieces of sawdust get real small.

I will say this having a logsplitter is great but I still split wood by hand to keep myself good at it because like everything else logsplitter can and will break and having the ability to split wood by hand is great I sell about 20 cords a year and I had a logsplitter and It broke and I have to split all my wood by hand and just the short time I had the splitter I got really rusty splitting by hand and I will say this splitting wood by hand is an art that takes pain to learn

What's that jam playing? I wanna say Cocaine Blues, but I have a feeling that's not quite right. Anyway, if I used as much firewood as you do, I'd def. use the splitter. Might want to hand-split some just for the exercise still even then, though. For the amount I use, it's all hand-split, for the exercise and because I enjoy it. I could see it getting old quick doing multiple cords, though.

I dunno, I've always used a hydraulic and I've switched over to splitting by hand. For soft wood it's gotta be about five times faster. Knotty pieces and crotch cuts get tossed in my 'splitter pile' though. To each his own I guess.
