I have had my rescue dog for a few years. She would not let me brush her teeth but tonight for the first time she did. That is just so amazing. I’m thrilled. Her teeth are actually really clean as she gets dental chews but my little dog’s teeth are not so good. We will get there though. Xx

Hello, do you have any tips on cutting a dog's nails? When it comes to nails, our dog is a "squealer." When we go in to cut her nails, she starts screaming and yelping even though we hadn't even done a cut yet, we just put the nail clippers next to her paw. She really hates it, but her nails are overly long.

A friend has a dog, a corgi which is super scared of everything. The corgi is in panic and barking each time goes to street, is afraid of people, cars, other dogs, etc... in house with fireworks or even when someone knocks the door, what can my friend do? Yeah, the tongue rubbing on it reduces the bacterial biofilm and plaque on the inner side of a dog's mouth. Not that there wouldn't be some benefit to brushing there, it is just way more work than can be justified by the benefit IMO. Please note: you should still brush the inner side of your own teeth.

What size toothbrush do you recommend for larger dogs? My guy is a 60 pound German Shepherd mix. Those are big teeth.

Regular baby toothbrush. The soft bristles is what makes it comfortable and doesn't wear the enamel. Size of brush doesn't matter.

For cutting a cat's nails (say they click on the carpet) what is your opinion on the bulldog-deactivation method? It seems unkind to me or is it acceptable practice. She will fight if done conventionally and taking her to a vet would be upsetting for old cat.

I think it is cruel, unnecessary and won't work with a truly aggressive cat. Please do not do that. I know its a neat video, but not very nice to the cat at all, and we should all center our lives around being nice to cats! You dog may likes the taste of the toothpaste, but just doesn't like to be brushed. so you need consider an pet toothbrush that it’s so easy and effective cleaning off teeth stains

What can I use if I cannot get special dog toothpaste? Is human toothpaste safe for my canine kids? Baking soda?

I wouldn't recommend using human toothpaste. The flavor is likely to be obnoxious to dogs, and artificial sweeteners can be toxic to dogs. If you can't get doggie toothpaste, just brush without any. There will be less benefit, but the mechanical action of brushing will still be of some benefit.

Hi....some of these paste have sorbitol in them and I read that it was not good to give a diabetic dog that kind. I don't remember where I read this. What are your thoughts? My dog is diabetic. Thanks.

Great question. Never use human toothpaste since some artificial sweeteners are toxic to dogs, and also they are not made to taste good to dogs AND they do not have the enzymatic component that pet toothpastes rely on to be effective. Always use a dog/cat toothpaste that you buy from a vet or petstore.

Kindly note Dr. While brushing pets all teeth are to be brushed including incisors. As we follow protocol for humans same lies with pets. Can forward u photos depicting calculus/plaque on pet incisors too.

I disagree. There is little value to brushing incisors in cats and dogs. It is not wrong to do, and if your pet is cool with it, you might as well, but I would like everyone to focus on the molars and canines. Those are the teeth that both develop significant pathology and are expensive and difficult to deal with when diseased. Incisors are of minor importance by all metrics.

I think that's pretty normal. If you aren't covered in drool and frantically trying to save your toothbrush, then you aren't brushing a dog's teeth :-). Good news though, you don't really need to brush the inside of dogs' teeth. The tongue and saliva seem to do a pretty good job of cleaning them. We always scale and polish all surfaces of a tooth during a COHAT, of course, but as far as at home care goes? Just focus on the outside surfaces of the teeth and you're golden.
