@@RunninUpThatHillh my dog hated the sound of clippers, so yeah, my mom didn't take him to the groomers very often because he would snap and then they'd muzzle him instantly without knowing why he snapped and she hated how they would muzzle him. My dog never was muzzle trained or even knew what it was, so when the groomers did that, he pretty much threw his body all around, and being chained up to the table, yeah, our lil man could of harmed himself badly, or others. Long story short, the groomers didn't listen to what my dog was trying to signal them. A groomer or my dog could of gotten seriously injured. My mom spent 6-10hrs on a weekend just trimming down our dog. Comb and scissors. Blisters and all and weirdly enough, our dog sat there like a statue, would angle his face to get in the tighter areas, more so sat there in pride like "yes, cut my fur off mama, its TOO MUCH!" So I totally agree with you. Id much rather take the time to groom my own dog vs taking them to a closed in, unfamiliar spot. Not saying Vanessa is horrible or anything negative, its just the fact not all dogs need a professional to groom them. YES, it's easier, its what groomers are there for, hell , even hairstylists for people! Its 100% a service type of job. But sometimes it just isn't the proper situation/setting for the groomer or dog(s). If the dog is older or has medical stuff going on, maybe NOT seeing a groomer is the better situation. Vanessa seems caring but not every groomer is* I rambled on, sorry about that but its truly a matter of fact. Some dogs just CANT be taken to the groomers. There are steps to make it seem more bearable for the dog.. but, not all methods work. (*dog i had growing up was a Cockapoo, his name was George and he crossed the rainbow bridge in 2013 ❤ that weirdo didn't like water but loved to be blow dried off. He would wait for it. Such a spoiled one he was)

I think the thing that needs to be remembered, Pekingese, Lhasa Apso, the Maltese and the Shit Zhous, are all alarm breeds. They are specifically bred to be small breeds that can alert to intruders or strangers inside walled complexes like monasteries and forts. They were bred to be reactive and loud. In that regard, these small breeds do make a lot more sense. It would also be a reasonable explanation as to why socialization didn’t really do as much for the small alarm breeds like it does for the larger guard breeds. They weren’t supposed to become desensitized to new experiences because that made them a worse dog for the task they were bred for. It’s just supremely unhelpful now because they aren’t used in that role any more. They’re reactive in a world that hasn’t got a use for that reactivity; and it’s really a shame that it would take so long to breed that reactivity out, even with a unified breeding approach.

My newly rescued shih tzu woke us all up in the middle of the night and refused to calm down because she could hear thieves in the garage - we thought it was just a racoon scrambling over the back fence when we turned the lights on to look. The thieves got one bike, but she saved the rest of the garage! Even our upstairs neighbours, whose bikes she helped to save, is quite happy to listen to her bark at the postman now - everyone knows when a package arrives. It also means my older dog officially gets to retire from his guard dog duties and sleep through everything without a care in the world. We're perfectly happy with our little alarm dog!

I think breeds like this are much harder to "read" as well, all the usual signs that a dog would give before biting are masked by the facial deformities - he's constantly panting and licking, so you can't use that; his eyes are so front-facing that it's hard to see a whale-eye; he can't snarl, because he barely has a muzzle; his ears are so flat and fluffy that they're tough to read position. I'm not surprised they have a reputation for snapping with no warning, what warnings can they give? I'm sure that struggle to communicate causes them extra background stress as well. I'd be very grumpy if I had to live with all that.

He was badly-trained, but thankfully had an overall sweet nature, so I was able to bathe him in the kitchen sink and take him outside into the backyard to shave him. After 3 hours, he'd come back into the house looking less like a mop and more like a teddy bear. As soon as I set him down on the floor, he'd take a running start across the linoleum then flop down, paws by his side, and slide across the the floor like a seal. He'd just lay there on the floor for a few minutes, wagging his tail. I think he really liked getting a haircut because he felt so much cooler afterward.

I really appreciate that you give caretakers the benefit of the doubt when a dog isn't groomed top notch. I took my previous dog into the groomers every 6 weeks (poodle) to get groomed (over a 7 year span) and when my depression tanked due to life circumstances, the groomers would give me these little judgmental comments about his nails, or that he wasn't brushed, and I never had the courage to tell them that my mental health was basically at rock bottom. I made sure my dog was always warm, and well fed, and hydrated, and we went on walks most days out of the week even when I wanted to curl up and die, and it made me feel like shit that they thought I was a bad guardian just because he wasn't brushed all the time. Edit: To those in the comments who claim depression didn't alter your ability to care for another, and others should exist by your absurd measuring stick? Get help; you're clearly missing your anterior insular cortex. My Dog's coat was always healthy otherwise; I kept him clean, well brushed, and his nails trimmed. I made sure to take him in every 6 weeks like the groomers suggest to keep his coat manageable and tidy. I just couldn't maintain his nails and coat between those visits when depression dragged me down for a 5-6 month period, and because of that I made sure to take him in every 6 weeks without fail so he _could_ get the grooming he needed. I've never loved a dog like the one I've described here. He died last March, and the world isn't remotely the same without him. And don't you dare tell me I should've given up on that dog. I rescued him; I made a legal and emotional promise that I would care for him for the rest of his days despite the awful people who beat him, shoved him in a crate, and abandoned him on the side of the road. I swore to him I would _always_ be here for him - when he had separation anxiety, when he wasn't socialized, when we had to have his leg amputated for cancer -- And I was. I was there for his birthday parties and the 'cakes' that I made, I was there when the thunder storms turned him into a jittery mess and we slept in a blanket fort in the tub, I was there every single night to brush his teeth, there every night to brush out his beautiful red curls, and I was there when I felt his last heartbeat, when I saw his last breath. He slept next to me every single night from the day we adopted him, and I had 7.5 amazing years to know him. I never once had to choose between the gas bill or food, and I'm grateful for that. I took _damn good_ care of my boy. Fuck anyone who thought I didn't take care of him even when I couldn't take care of myself.

I'm a licensed Search and Rescue dog trainer and about 2 years ago. When I got my Caucasian Shepherd at 10 weeks old he was attacked. By my VERY crazy ex-girlfriend's Pekingese. She blamed my puppy and me for the attack. Her dog only had one little puncture in its ear. As for mine, I had to race him to the Animal Emergency Clinic. After three and a half hours he was deemed stable. We broke up; now my dog and I live in a different state.

What an insanely smart dog though - once the cone was off he was looking at where the leashes were attached to - he meticulously inspected every new tool, and understood the shaver wouldnt hurt him despite the noise. Dogs like this are vicious little guard dogs, also the reason im extra cautious around small dogs - their bites are RAZOR sharp, and they mean as much business as a big dog

After finding this video, I realized my dog was not one of a kind as far as his lack of sentiment towards being groomed. Thank you for showing dogs and their breeds in this perspective! I tried to have him groomed by a professional groomer. My dog resisted being groomed so badly, I decided to just pay the groomer for having wasted a failed session. After that, I groomed him myself all the time. (Only the vet was ever able to clip my dog’s nails, after I asked very nicely) I had a Pekingese for 9 years, he is now resting in peace, having passed earlier this year. He was about 2 y/o when I rescued him in 2013. He was my first dog. I do miss him very much, and I would definitely love another Peke…even with all the drama that they have, there is all that more delight they share!

I genuinely feel sorry for the little guy. His anxiety was through the roof, coming through as a aggression. Add in the pain of the matting and overgrown nails, and he was an emotional mess. Once the pain was gone, he seemed to be less stressed. Same with being able to breathe & see. You mentioned that it was a good thing he wasn't a bigger dog. Had a bigger dog shown that level of aggression, it probably wouldn't have survived as long as he has. Small dogs often are allowed more leeway in their behavior than a large dog would be. A husky or shepherd lashing out that way would be capable of serious injury in a way he can't quite manage!

UH HUH. This is a thing a lot of people who say they "dislike small dogs" or talk about how grumpy Chihuahuas are often miss! (And it's often a vicious cycle since most are more willing to ignore/annoy a smaller dog for the same reason)

i feel so guilty just being near one when i hear them breathe like that. it's not even my fault. but i always felt so bad that humans were so selfish to put them in those predicaments. breeding extra large breeds is no better either (think of their hip, back, and heart issues). breeding for the sake of aesthetics is so greedy and unethical. i actually saw a video of a pug not too long ago trying to sleep but he kept waking himself up as he was about to black out because he'd stop breathing in his sleep. it's so so so barbaric. thankfully some breeders are trying to breed out those bad features but that's not always going to be the case. there's always going to be over breeding. and that's going to lead to problems like filling up already filled shelters and rescues.

Exactly. ❤️ I know what it’s like to have such an aggressive dog that’s it’s difficult to get him groomed. You never know the family’s situation and even if it’s best they find the dog a new home a lot of the time you just can’t find a great new home for aggressive dogs. Sometimes the best you can do is slowly work with them.

@@90210bryan you have no idea what an "absolutely inhumane condition" of a dog even looks like. his coat isn't tattered/dirty/burnt/covered in poo/fleas, etc. dog looks well fed and clean, besides the matting which I figure the dog got by running around while his coats wet (my pekingese did that a lot). His coat is lush and the dogs dont always let their owners cut their nails so most dont bother trying until they get too long. Inhumane conditions are having your dog be on a leash or in a cage outside all year long while neglecting it for months on end, while its sick and or starving. That is "absolutely inhumane" This guy's chunky and otherwise fine. A neglectful family wouldn't have even noticed the need nor bothered getting him to a groom, so these are fine owners. You don't at all get hard times.

@@kiwaminski dude his nails were jammed into the paw pad and his eyes were filled with gunk. You're irresponsible, just say it lol There are plenty of others who could do the job, so knowing this and choosing to not take advantage is really sad. If you need an emotional support animal there are plenty of short haired breeds that would be much better suited for a family that is struggling.
