Have been in such a situation as well when two cars collided on a German Autobahn. The most distressing sight of that was all the people who drove by taking pictures and videos and putting the few people who stopped to help at risk, especially as one of the cars was leaking gas. It got even worse when the fire departement later temporarily closed the road, when people started shouting at and insulting firefighters because they could not get through or no longer could get good pictures. Ashaming especially if I think, that in Germany a first aid training is a mandatory part of getting a drivers license. and by law you have to stop and help, or at least call 112 (the European version of 911) as long as you do not have to put yourself in danger to do so. Everything else is a criminal offense.

Sad to hear about the accident. I had a 16 year old bleed out in my arms. He was thrown from a truck that hit a culvert and flipped. He wasn't wearing a seat belt because he had 2 girls and another boy in the front seat with him. Couldn't sleep for days. Jack must have had a guardian angle looking out for him.

I joined our local volunteer fire dept. over 30 years ago, right after hurricane Hugo. Still one of the most worthwhile decisions I have ever made. Having a little medical knowledge helps in situations just like these. Love the way ya'll joke about the sirens and not edit them out in the videos also.

Prayers for Jack to make a full recovery.... I fell asleep at the wheel in my Dad's new VW BUg driving across the Namib desert from Swakopmund to Windhoek. Dad was asleep in the passenger seat.... luckily all i hit was sand, and bogged down in it... A year earlier, same trip...We came across a head on crash just happened maybe 20min earlier...Dad said to stay in the car, but we went to look anyway.... I saw a man with the dashboard crushing his legs, and some sort of liquor bottle on the ground....I should never have gone to look.... Cheers Blessings Adam&Abby....

We wish him all the best with a speedy recovery. Done night shifts, and yes the lights can play on the eyes and the blackout can happen real fast. In some jobs you can take a couple of short naps within the 8 hour shift. But in most cases jobs stretch to 10 - 12 hours and thats when its best to sleep for an hour at the job site and then drive home cautiously.

Speaking as someone did shift work for 10 years I know how hard it is to stay awake. Just a few weeks ago my wife and youngest son were talking about how hard it must have been making the 28 miles to get home. I never told my wife how hard it was to get home. During the winter I would run the A/C to try to stay awake. There were times, hot or cold, I would pull to the side of the road and get out and walk around my truck until I felt like I was awake enough to go the rest of the way home. I fell asleep several times but never ran off the road.

Thanks for stopping to help. Many people won't now a days. This is the reason I keep a fully stocked trauma kit in my car. I can stop severe bleeding, stabilize broken limbs, cover and protect severe burns, seal sucking chest wounds, and install an NP or OP airway if the person is unconscious or facially maimed. I have trauma shears and several pairs of gloves too. The glass hammer and seatbelt cutter stays in my center console where I MYSELF can get to it if I get in the crash. One small fire extinguisher is mounted to my passenger seat rails where I can get to it in a crash, and I have another much larger one in the trunk in case that one isn't enough or in case I'm helping someone else put out their car fire. I carry a first aid kit as well, and I keep some medicines and stuff in it as well as the more minor wound care stuff that came with it. Diabetic glucose is an important one I have in there that may have been useful for a situation like this. Someone that is hypoglycemic from not eating or overdosing insulin could cause a car crash and need emergency glucose to regain function. "You never know when you'll be the first responder." -SkinnyMedic If my trauma kit allows me to save just one person's life or limb, it was worth the cost buying the pieces, the time putting it together, and the time spent learning how to use it all.

Asleep at the wheel. It was a bad idea getting him out of the truck. First rule is unless you have no option leave them in the vehicle. Wait until EMT arrives and gets him out. It is too easy to hurt people really bad. Just kill the motor, and speak to the person, keep them warm. Yes, I was an EMT in a previous life.
@mannys9130
@mannys9130 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct. Unless the vehicle is at risk of catching on fire or exploding (smoldering, leaking fuel, already burning) you really should keep them there in the seat and prevent them from moving their head or spinal column. If the vehicle is threatening to burn or blow up, of course you have no choice but to extract them as delicately as possible keeping them as straight as possible. More people helps for that. EMTs could have carried him up and outta there on a backboard if they needed to. It's so important to keep trauma patients' CNS stable and anatomically aligned. We're talking like, "All I did was lean him over toward me to unbuckle his seatbelt and then he screamed that he couldn't feel his legs anymore and he wet his pants. I barely even touched him." That's how quickly it can happen.

It might be fine as he walked away this time, but there sure is a risk. And there is no need to be an EMT to know that, you usually learn something like that even in basic first aid training. How I know? I did two of them in my life, which considering that I am 41 is less than what would be good to have. I did the first one at age 17, in preparation to get my drivers license. (Here in Germany and other parts of Europe you are required to do a basic first aid training as part of your education to get a drivers license. That training includes CPR, basics on how to react to an accident etc and previously also how to put compression bandages on a bleeding wound, they simplified it a few years ago and took away the parts people without routine hardly can get right or possibly can do damage with when done wrong.) The later one I did about two years ago, to get certified as a first aider, as around here by code you have to have a certain number of people with certified first aid training available in a commercial building exceeding a certain number of employees. I am about due to renew that one, but the training between the two is practically the same. Just some changes on what they train you in the about years. this time for example they added how to use an AED. So ideally I should have done at least another three or four such trainings in between. I can only recommend such a training for everyone. It takes away a lot of the fear to provide help, especially if repeated regularly, and I can only recommend it even more if you are on the road a lot, away from where an ambulance may take just 10 minutes to arrive or you have guaranteed access to a phone line. Or also if you for example work with machinery that easily may take a bit of your body and cause injuries. Being able to provide such help in a lot of medical emergencies can buy a person the most important minutes of being helped they need. But there is one important conclusion for anyone that may avoid helping in such a situation out of fear to do something wrong. The only thing you can do wrong, is to do nothing at all. The very least bit should be getting help. (Anything less could even be an offense, depending on where you are). You don´t have to and should not put yourself in danger by doing so, but you can try to get help. And if necessary that may be driving to the closes shop or house you can find to make a call to 911. And for those who fear legal consequences out of helping and maybe damaging anything or hurting someone in a good faithed attempt to help, there usually is something like the good samaritan act that protects you from such things, if you provide help in good faith and take no reckless actions.

So glad i no longer work night shift. I used to get off tge midnight to 8 drive the 2 miles home and fall asleep as soon as i pulled out of the plant. Wake up right before stop sign, cross the road fall back asleep and wake up before my next turn and repeat this pattern at railroad crossings and turns till i pulled into driveway. Then id put car in park and sit there and sleep for a bit. Then go in and go to bed.

Work on life flight helicopter. For future reference when they complain of back pain and abdominal pain the best is to not walk and not do activities to increase heart rate. If they have internal bleeding raised heart rate bleeds faster. The abdominal cavity can hold 2 liters of blood with no signs. A broken back in the wrong spot moved 1/4 inch wrong leaves them paralyzed. Oh by the way when in the hills you always stop at the Pactolia lookout. Noticed you drove right by.

This knowledge and a lot of other things are usually covered in a basic first aid training. I can only highly recommend those, especially if travelling of the beaten track, or in areas where the next ambulance or even the next working phone may be more than just a few minutes away. Also when working with heavy machinery. And in fact, it can help anyone who may need to help someone suffering from anything like a heart attack or injury. I got such a training the first time more than 20 years ago, as here in Germany it is a mandatory part of getting a drivers license. Sadly you don´t have to renew it which leaves an about 20 year gap for me between that training and the last one I did to get certified as a company first aider (Here in commercial buildings with more than a certain numbers of employees you have to have a number of certified first aiders available) So here we are in the comfortable situation that anyone who is allowed to drive a vehicle, should be able to provide first aid, although an ashaming lot of people these days just drive by taking fotos and videos. Besides basic knowledge about what to do and what not to do, those trainings teach you how to provide CPR, how to make an emergency call to 911 and provide all the necessary information (or 112 in Europe) and simply cover the most important minutes until professional emergency services arrive. And despite moving a person after such a crash if there is no imminent danger of fire or the vehicle dropping into water or whatever it may be is not ideal, we should remember, the worst thing to help is not do anything at all. And if it only is going to make the call to 911.
@alexanderkupke920

@ScottNJ I think that puts you in a situation with more training than the majority of people. Some knowledge that can be the most useful whenever we may not expect it to be.

I always carry a crowbar and tools in my cars and have pried doors open more than once. Be VERY careful moving accident victims though! In fact DON'T! Let the first responders take the liability. Unless the car is on fire don't. YOU can be sued!
@AbomAdventures

For what it’s worth to everyone, I did not move him from the truck. By the time I got to them the victim and first on scene were coming up the shoulder to the road. If an accident victim is trying to pull himself from a vehicle I don’t think people will just stand there and say don’t move, especially if there risk of it catching fire.

oh boy. good thing is that if he was able to walk, albeit in shock - his spine is not broken, so he'll be able to walk. also, if he's worried that his mom is going to be pissed at him for wrecking the truck, he's young and should recover. another random thought is that you could've asked him for his email or something and organized a little funding campaign for the poor feller - I'm sure we could've raised a grand or two just here on this channel - but don't take that as a blame, I totally understand that might not be your thing or you didn't think about it in the heat of the moment. all that said, I would encourage everybody reading this to go and get a basic first aid course at the nearest Red Cross. those are free, don't take much time, and one day might save somebody's life, even yours.
