HEMA Double Hit Average ⚔️

How often do you double in HEMA? Do double a lot or a little? How do you know? To fully answer these questions we must first understand what the average number of double hits is, so that we know if we fall above or below the average.
This video is a summary of my current investigation into the topic of HEMA double hits. I included how I calculated the current HEMA Double Hit Ratio as well as how to calculate your own adjusted double hit ratio.

I think alot of doubles wouldn't happen with sharp swords since the opponent is impaled, the use of the arms have been cut of or that pain/fear stops you.

I tried doing a foam sword tournament, which EVERYONE was doubling. And the shit judges (only judged for a small time prior) kept giving the points to who they wanted in a double

Damn! That sounds frustrating as hell! I guess with the foam there is no real sense of self-preservation because there is no risk of injury?

I really like your videos and the way you are going with the double hit analysis. What I don't understand is your adjusted double hit ratio. Why is that necessary to compare data from different tournaments? It could also lead to bias in your result if there are matches with few exchanges. Keep up your good work, I watched every of your videos at least 2 times!

Thank you! I'm just glad all those lame statistics classes are being used for something I actually care about. So, an adjusted rate can help eliminate some differences (aka confounding effects) between the two samples (in this case tournament data). By eliminating some of these differences, we get a better idea of how two sets of data compare to one another. Additionally, in the adjusted rate, the data is not going to be impacted as dramatically by a couple of outliers, so you get a clearer picture of the true population mean than if you were to compare two crude rates. There are lots of different ways that statistics can be adjusted such as, to remove outliers, adjust based off of a distribution which was calculated from another sample, or adjust based off a single criteria. The double hit average is adjusted based on the amount of matches. Not all tournaments have the same number of exchanges per match. I hope this made sense and I didn't just create more confusion. =/

Great study. Creates questions like- is there a correlation between some fencer's double rate and their win rate? (What if it turned out that some successful fencers had high double rate?)

I have yet to note a correlation such as that but I have noticed that fencers who maintain containment of their opponents weapon (binding or moving to pommel or grapple) have a much lower double hit ratio than fencers who leave the bind or go for the single time counter.
