"Knowledge is Power" and sadly for some of us, we gain the knowledge a bit too late. With a growing number of people suffering from nail product related allergies, it's essential that we educate ourselves before it's too late...just ask me how I know. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge and information.

Such important information. I used to foolishly believe that any product made for putting on the body would be safe… and now I, too, have an allergy. And when I was looking into it, it was so difficult tracking down info from some companies! (In some cases they definitely felt a bit evasive.) Thank you for helping out get more information out there about this topic!!

Hi. I watched a video with a chemist that explained HEMA allergy and he explained how a product can be labeled hypoallergenic and still contain HEMA monomers. There’s different types of HEMA and the type that is bound together (not free flowing) is less likely to cause issues because of its molecular size being bigger than free flowing HEMA (witch enters the skin easier due to its small size).

Ah ok! Good to know for uk viewers. Amazon is the Wild West sometimes. Good for some things but not so great for nail products 🙁

Thanks❤ for doing this video about HEMA and other chemicals. I got an reaktion on HEMA last year. OMG it was really hurting my fingertips. Now I’m fine again, I just let my nails rest and used press on tips without glue for a few month. Now I’m really careful about the products I use are HEMA FREE, and I have a real uv- lamp, not a mini version for just 1 nail at time😂

For me, my gel allergy isn’t to HEMA, because Acrylic doesn’t give me any issues. I haven’t gotten allergy tested so I can’t know exactly what is causing this but something in Gel products is the culprit. Also, the lamps actually cause me pain, not just a sting. And it’s happened with every lamp my hands have been under, even professional grade. I shouldn’t have ignored that I think. I think the lamp might be part of what I can’t use. So no more gel & lamps for me! It destroyed my nails and nail health for a bit there. I’m glad my reaction was relatively small as compared to some I’ve seen. Because I already knew that allergies could arise at any time, at the first sign of anything wrong I took it all off and left that stuff alone. I was able to keep acrylic on my very fragile, vulnerable, paper thin nails while that Gel damage grew out and the skin around & under my nails healed nicely. Now I’m at the point that my nails are short but strong enough not to need added hard helmet type protection. So I’m back to only traditional nail polish like I was for 25 years before I started messing with Gel at the start of the pandemic. So I will stick to using Silk & Acrylic for breaks and only traditional polish otherwise.

Thank you for sharing! This comment reminded me of something that can happen similarly as you describe. It’s to do with the hardening reaction and the % of different chemicals in the product. Sometimes when the product is very high in let’s say the bonder chemical and reacts strongly with the light it can cause a chemical burn, which can cause lifting and allergies. Pair that with not knowing truly the % of how well the nail is cured because it’s visibly impossible to know and this can cause a truly terrible reaction. I’m 8 years in doing nails and this year I’ve switched completely to air dry system dazzle dry which gives me no grief. I’m glad to hear you’re doing regular polish again. Gel and acrylic are so nice but for some folks it’s just not right for our health.

I highly recommend that you see a dermatologist and get what is called a "Methacrylate Patch Test." They test for a long list of things not just HEMA. I recommend it because a lot of these highly allergenic ingredients present in nail products can also be present in things we wouldn't expect. I hope you continue to feel better.

Are there any specific gel brands you prefer and ones to avoid? I've been doing my nails for YEARS and never had issues and just under a year ago I started suffering allergic reactions to the products I've been using for years... now I'm struggling to find new products that are safe and won't set me off...

Light elegance. I’ve had issues with a lot of other hema free brands in the past so that’s the only company I can vouch for other than using an air dry system like dazzle dry. Not the same as far as structuring an enhancement to replace your existing nail but a nice colour collection.

Are you based in the USA? Just asking bc I’m wondering about the medical stuff. Have you had a patch test yet? Did you ever have issues wearing bandaids or with dental fills? Etc… I’m suspecting an allergy began for me but I’m not sure and I’m panicking.

I live in Canada, health system a bit different here! I think in the USA you can get through insurance ? Might be a faster process! No allergies to bandaids but I am allergic to a lot of environmental stuff and had eczema as a kid which can be a predisposition to this kind of allergy! I’d discontinue use and contact appropriate medical service provider asap for sure. Good luck with this!

@@Cheyennerae do you wear anything on your nails? Have you tired light elegance or anything like that?
@Cheyennerae

Light elegance is decent, possibly one of the only truly hypoallergenic brands to work with. I wear dazzle dry occasionally and manucurist active glow (air dry systems) I’ve tried manucurist gel it’s decent, would be acceptable for at home gel use if that’s something you are looming for. Everyone’s body’s different though so I can’t say who’s allergic to what if you know what I mean. I stick to dazzle dry bc it works well and I enjoy it.
