********************************************************************ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!****************************************************************** **********************************************************************TO ADDRESS COMMON COMPLAINTS********************************************************** This match took place on mats. Also Plenty of fights don't. Go Watch Street Beefs. Stop saying mats are needed. *Based on comments from the time **The fighter in Red had the wind knocked out him but otherwise was fine **Completing a throw is usually not allowed in Longsword Tournaments but for this specific tournament it was, which is why Red is so caught off gaurd *The pommel strikes Red lands are debatable in power. It's possible they would cause injury but personally I doubt it. I think it would just cut the face a bit and cause a headache. Whether they should be scored depends on rule set and judges.

Even still the throw shouldn't have happened because the pommel smash to the head would have been a point and ended the round. He didn't wanna actually hurt the other guy so he didn't hit hard where as the dude in blue slams him full force. What we have here is a douchebag vs a gentleman

Grappling is what they call it in the german manuals, but basically if you get so close to the opponent just beat the shit out of them. But then again there is actual moves for grappling
@Annokh
@Annokh 3 жыл бұрын
There's an opinion that modern HEMA rules (well, some rulesets, to be more precise) favour stuff like that. In order to give better representation to historical grappling - and it was common in armoured combat - rules were tweaked and takedowns like this can now score, and occasionally they score well. As a result, there are enthusiasts who criticize the way these changes were implemented because now they sometimes get to witness entire HEMA tournaments getting "stormed" by wrestlers who manage to win events almost like in this video: "clash, throw away your sword, slam the opponent", time after time. But then again, this is sports for you, as soon as you introduce score, you create metagaming, and it'll probably be ridiculous. This is not even the worst example, because from historical standpoint there's nothing unusual about ending fight on the ground. Although the criticism also has a point: when most anti-armour techniques are banned in tournaments for safety reasons, it is indeed bound to become wrestling competition with extra steps.

I remember one comment about medieval knights being very fit so they could sprint in full plate, so usual vs. Knight doctrine was to disarm the knight then overpower it with superior strength and hand to hand combat... Which is their actual expertise, so more than once someone thought disarming them made them helpless until realizing they now have 150 pounds of muscle wearing 50 pounds of steel who can outrun you and about to go medieval. In short, if disarmed but not disabled, it's WrestleMania time

Nah to be honest if you look at the oldest manuscropt out there by Fiore, he has much more grappling plays explained than sword plays xD Tbh nothing shows greater skill than properly executed lock, or throw, and it shows huge skill, it isn't necessarily easy to close in and get a proper throw when a sword is pointed at you. Even here you can argue that the throw wasn't that good as it allowed the opponent to get a proper pommel strike to the top of his head. If you want to see how a throw in this position may be executed better just look up Meyers 1st longsword throw

Eric there's a difference between grappling and picking up an object and slamming it. Fighter 1 (thrower) had other options here, but it was clearly a premeditated move. Throwing is a common thing in HEMA (especially German ringen) but if either partner doesn't know how to fall correctly or throw the opponent, it's plausible for extreme injury. The ground in this video is not matted, otherwise I might have an altered opinion.

@pingusbror
@pingusbror 3 жыл бұрын
@@tenyako There is no training that can help you "fall correctly" when being slammed like that. The burden lies on the thrower to know and employ their training to soften the landing. This guy in the video did the opposite - he followed through by putting his weight behind it too. This is not a brawl, there is no need to actually hurt your opponent when just showing that you could've done so is enough to score, this is the same reasoning employed for choosing bendy feders over blunt but rigid swords. No HEMA competitor expects to suffer a fractured hip or spinal injury, they expect bruises, maybe a broken finger, not much more than that though. Even some of the more aggressive sports (like MMA for example) which do utilize proper safety-oriented floor matting still have quite a few rules about what is and isn't allowed in terms of slams. One example of an illegal move would be controlling the opponents body to turn it upside down and then "spiking" their head into the ground (which can cause quite severe injuries related to spinal compression).

I'd say so. It's definitely a minority of hema clubs which actually teach grappling of this level. Most will either just touch on it, or just focus on grappling of the arm, or just focus on the fencing. I think every tournament I've been to has disallowed throws or grappling of the body because they know most people attending, offender or defender, won't have been trained to throw safely nor fall safely (not to mention the danger of being thrown on a sword), in favour of only allowing grappling of the arm (or none at all in some cases). If this were seen at any tournament I've been a part of they would likely forfeit the match, perhaps even the whole tournament were it deemed serious enough

For those curious, throws are legal in HEMA, but only if executed safely and as a controlled takedown. They actually give the most points for them during tournaments cause they are very hard to do. That being said, this was dangerous to say the least. Red had the wind knocked out of him, but if he had landed wrong could've been seriously hurt. Blue also threw his sword into what I assume would be spectators, definitely could hurt someone like that. I'm not an expert in HEMA or anything, but that's my two cents

Not cool at all, it really is just a cheap shot.. I wouldn't want to fence with this guy.. Either way, its been such a long we don't even know the context behind the tournament ruleset or what the fencers collectively agreed upon... But idk, perhaps it was a d*ck move. I don't think this at the level of like pocket sand, knee stomps, though kicks to the upper body isn't a problem I think. I mean, it is a part of KDF right? Running-through. In police Kendo you sometimes see trips, sweeps or pushes with the blade that knocks someone down and concussions them.
