My dog unfortunately passed from this cancer 2 weeks ago. She was so happy and her usual self, and then one day she was acting totally different. Took her to the vet and they said her gums are white and she was internally bleeding so she will need to undergo exploratory surgery to see if its hemangiosarcoma. They opened her up and saw the tumor ruptured and spread all over her internal body. The vet said they cant do anything really once it gets that bad. We had to say bye to her while she was under anesthesia. I miss her so much to this day RIP daisy 2013-2023 I miss u so much and theres never a day that goes by without me thinking of u

Thank you for sharing. My dog was diagnosed and was gone within 40 days. It just showed up as a tumor on his neck but then multiple tumors appeared all over his body. Its so agressive. It did metastases to his liver and I was told a couple months. But it was devastating and we had to put him to sleep out of mercy. Miss him so much

My 14 almost 15 year old puggle, full of life, got a small black lump on her abdomen in 2022. A month ago in August 2024 it started to grow. I’ve been told I have a month left. I’m a wreck. She’s so happy and full of life I can’t handle. She’s my first dog. I got her when I was 18 and she fit in the palm of my hand. I love you so much Lola. 2009- ……

My 10 year old pit mix had this. Was always so happy and always ate anything. Her appetite got bad ti non exsistent 3 days leading to her death. She threw up a few times. She drank a lot of water. She laid down all day with very heavy breathing, she wouldnt walk, she barely was aware of anyone around. She had sudden bursts of energy that were very short lived and she would sit or lay. She groaned a lot and coughed. Leading to this point about 4 months esrlier she had a cough and a hack. Bloods came back normal. Hacking got worse, energy got worse. Groaning when she slept and rolled over got worse. It all happend very suddenly. We thought it was sore joints with the groaning and reistamce to move. Vets gave her cough meds and pain meds but no signs of something major from exam. She got very bad the last night and We put her down as soon as we got the scans in emergency. Multiple tumors. One must have ruptured in the last few days when her appetitie dissapeared and she would not move. Her bresthing was very fast but shallow. Breaks my heart talking about it. I feel like i didnt do something before it got so bad.

I am so sorry for your loss. My dog had the exact same thing - hack and a cough then collapsed from HSA. He was on prednisone and hydrocodone and he was already doing so well for a week, then he collapsed. So now reading your story, I knew that the hacking and coughing was related to the cancer (more like he was gagging, we had no sleep for 4 nights because he was gagging every 3 minutes). I still think about my boy and grieving. So heartbroken.

Same here. Happened less than 24 hrs of me typing this with my 10 yr old golden boy. Sudden and unexpected are understatements. There’s nothing you can do to prepare for this happening as there are little to NO signs until it’s too late. He was his normal self up until Monday morning when he wouldn’t move and struggled to get up. Would never wish this terrible disease on anybody!

Lost my 11 year old golden to this a few months ago. She collapsed one night, took her to the vet, she had a large tumor on her spleen & several smaller ones on her liver plus fluid around her heart. The vet said she probably wouldn't make it through another night so we said goodbye.

I’ve had many dogs over the years, and they’ve nearly all lived long healthy lives. But within the past five years, I lost TWO dogs to HSA. The 10 year old Shepherd had a mast tumor removed, but within a few months, her spleen suddenly ruptured. We took her to the emergency clinic, and they didn’t offer much hope. So we put her down. Then our 13+ Lab, who enjoyed life to the fullest, suddenly went off her food. She had been treated months earlier for pancreatitis, so we thought it was a recurrence. But it was HSA. Our vet offered a combo surgery/chemo to give her a few more months. I couldn’t put the old girl through it, so one of my adult children accompanied me and, with hugs and kisses, we sat with her while she departed this world. I always say I can’t go through it again, but we adopted two Pyrenees from the rescue, and they’re a great comfort to us, although the male suffers from PTSD. But that’s another story.

Dave GLO, firstly sorry for your enormous losses with your dogs. My border collie suddenly went off his food. Multiple blood tests and the vet came up with pancreatitis. So we’ve done the low fat food and then we did a specialist scan, human Dr did it. 7cm tumour tucked up in the liver. They either said it’s HSA or just hemangioma as in blood clot. Despite the vet telling me to double his food to see if he is able to put weight on, he is losing weight, about 25% of body weight since October. He shows zero pain, and appears very comfy. Is on gabapentin and amandatine for some arthritis. They said we can operate but if it’s the sarcoma, there’s nothing we can do. He has some arthritis issues and we aren’t keen to put him through surgery. Think we are going to lose him. My heart is tearing in two.

@@rubychurch3466 I’m so sorry. It all sounds very familiar. When I look back, the Shepherd would wag her tail for us, but otherwise she’d just go off to another room and keep to herself. She was dying and I had no idea. She would often roll over to let us rub her tummy, and a few times I asked my son, “why is her tummy so red?” It never occurred to me that she was bleeding internally. With the Lab, she really did have pancreatitis, and I caused it. After so many decades with dogs, I still believed that a special meal of beef fat was healthy! She loved it, obviously, but it made her very sick. The vet said she might not make it. But we put her on the special diet, and she was fine for six months. She’d always been VERY food-motivated, so when she stopped eating and drinking, I knew it was bad. I brought her right in to the clinic, and they at first thought it was pancreatitis again. They wanted to send us home with pain meds. I insisted that she stay there for a full ultrasound and whatever diagnostics they needed to do. She had once been 92 pounds, and she was now down to 40. That’s when they saw the tumor, and that it had spread. I probably could’ve kept her going for a few more weeks or months, but why? It would’ve been selfish. She’d always been the happiest dog I’d known, so why make her miserable with meds and procedures? I’d made that mistake with a previous Lab and Collie, and I swore I’d never let a dog suffer again. I still mourn every one of them, but I’m glad I didn’t let these latest two linger.

Just had to put our 10 year old goldendoodle down due to HSA two days ago. First presented with him collapsing inside the house and loss of bowl control as a result. He never pooped in the house, so we knew it was serious. Trip to the vet er and ultrasound done as well as abdominal needle aspiration. Ultrasound showed small lesions on his liver that were no concern to the vet, but there were areas on his spleen that were more suspect. Aspiration showed no blood in his abdomen. An anaphylactic reaction to something was in the differential diagnosis as well as Addisons disease or a tumor. Ultrasound showed a halo around his gallbladder, which is an indicator of addisons. Another test, which eludes me, ruled out addisons. So the feeling was it was anaphylaxis. He spent three days in the hospital. A course of steroids and antibiotics were administered. He improved, and was fine for two months. He had gotten his energy back close to 80% I would say, and his appetite returned. He had a short lived recurrence of lethargy for which we took him in to our local vet. He had an ACTP test that came back “equivocal “ for addisons. He was put on 10mg of daily steroids and seemed to be on an even keel for a couple weeks. Then he had another episode where he was very lethargic, hung his head while lying down, and would let out a moan occasionally. Another trip to the er, as it was a Sunday evening, and this time ultrasound showed fluid in his abdomen and blood on aspiration. Tumor on his spleen that ruptured was diagnosed. Splenectomy was discussed, but we were given a poor prognosis with possibility of survival of 6 months projected. We decided to let Cooper go. Very, very sad day.

So sorry for your loss my friend. I unfortunately can relate firsthand as we just went through this HSA within the last 24hrs with our 10 yr old golden boy. Totally unexpected and sudden out of nowhere. He was fine and acting normal full of energy and 24 hrs later he’s gone. Although it hurts beyond words, I know he’s not suffering and we provided home with the best life any dog could ever want and then some. He knows that as do we and we can live with knowing we did him a favor in his unfortunate situation and let him go peacefully. Thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. 🐾

I lost my 6 year old dog to this, she meant the world to me. Had mass on her spleen and liver. She acted completely normal in the morning and an hour later she couldn’t stand and struggling to breath. Rushed her to the hospital and was told they ruptured and she was hemorrhaging and internally bleeding, there is nothing they can do. She had surgery 2x in the last 2 years to remove cancerous masses but she showed no signs something was wrong til it was to late.

Thank you. Very informative. My dog just had a splenectomy. Biopsy showed HSA. We caught it before it ruptured. I find some hope in your comment about "catching it before it spread or after." Of course I am praying that we caught it before it metastasized. Very scary disease.

My boxer was also diagnosed with HSA almost one year ago after being told he would only had two weeks to three months to live Once I researched this cancer We went out and put him on the Chinese herb Yunnan Baiyao we’ve also been giving him turkey tail, mushroom and milk thistle. Amazingly he’s still with us. This vet should be mentioning this Chinese herb.

Thanks for this video. I’m dealing with this right now with my almost 13 year old lab/pit mix. She was very lethargic the past few weeks, not eating much. Took her to the vet, they took some blood. She had a bit of a fever and her white blood cell count was high. They said it might be an infection and put her on antibiotics. After about 5 days of that and her not improving we took her back. They did an X-ray and said her spleen and liver were enlarged and to bring her back in a few days to get a sonogram done. In between, some days she would eat and others she would have a few bites and that was it. She’s wobbly while walking, she seems to get out of breath just walking to drink water and even when resting her breathing is pretty rapid. They did the sonogram and found masses that have spread all over her abdomen and they’re assuming it started in her spleen. They told us there’s nothing that can really be done for her and to take her home and make her comfortable. At this point how long would you say she has left and would you recommend putting her to sleep? I’m at a crossroads and not sure what to do. Thank you!

It varies from patient to patient.... Sounds like a quality of life decision. If you're having more bad days than good days most would recommend euthanasia. I feel its better to euthanize a week too early than day to late.

I had to put my 12 year old Labrador to sleep this morning because of this cancer. Our vet found it on Wednesday of this week as we took him in for uncontrolled vomiting. He had it in his spleen, his heart, and his lungs. He only lasted from Wednesday till Sunday morning when he collapsed and was in a lot of pain and could no longer move. Putting him to sleep was heart wrenching, we will always miss him. This cancer is extremely aggressive and I have not been able to find one dog that has gone into remission. If your dog gets it he will not make it.

More info about what you mean when you say a pup will “Go down for the day” until they have another rupture or leak…. The info you give is useful more for veternarian techs or whatever and not so much for pup owners..who need more info about symptoms and tests no matter you did say they present variably and often no warning. Also for those on a budget could use ideas from a profession about what to start with …testing diagnostic strategies.
