Fascinating “slice of life” video clip of some down-home folks enjoying a legendary machine. This car is all business, not even a radio, and when the driver briefly gets on it, the Hemi delivers the goods. Too bad about the steering problem but it’s an old car and this stuff happens. The girl has a great attitude. Three people I wouldn’t mind having a beer with.

This vid brings back so many memories. I used to ride in the back of our 64 sport fury 383 magnum with a 4 speed and my Dad drove, and Mom in the pass seat! Early B-Bodies are in a class by themselves.

I neglected to replace a rubber sleeve around the column at the dash clamp. I must have unconsciously pulled on the steering column as I dumped the clutch (this car really pulls), and the clamp alone was not enough to hold the column. At the steering box, the shaft goes straight into a coupling, it separated there. It pushed right back in, but I've re-fit the sleeve to prevent it from happening again. Lesson learned!

I owned a '64 back in the late '60s. Loved that car. Miss it. If I still owned it, I would install a dual master cylinder for the brake system. To install some headers I had to remove the power steering and install the shorter manual box. I was young, wild, and dumb in those days to my poor old pops dismay. But, hell, he taught me mechanic work. Be careful what you wish for pop. The "Knack" is a powerful force.

Great video. Kristin's response reminds me of my first ride in a muscle car back in 1976, a 68 tri-power GTO 4spd. Being pinned to the back seat was unforgettable. Had a similar loss of steering on a 68 SS427 Impala, dropped the drag link exiting the driveway (castle nut not torqued & no carter pin). Glad to see you kept the radio delete, anything transmitted through speakers couldn't compete with the mechanical sound of this sweet drive train.

I owned a '64 Bevedere. 2 dr sedan, 318 cid from factory. I installed a '68 model Road Runner 383 in it to my dad's dismay back in 1969. I wish like HELL I would have left that car alone and kept it stock. I have 60+ years knowledge now and would install a dual master cylinder on the brake system...too late, that car is long gone. Regrets.

I ended up hitting a fence and denting the fender,.. Mine was dark blue with a 426, 4 speed, same dash with no radio, I had no wipers either, just plugged holes where the wipers went , I wish I still had that car, they sell for 1/4 million these days

@Mod1032
@Mod1032 8 жыл бұрын
I had the steering column out, didn't have it indexed properly at the dash mount. The coupling is not a sufficient retention device. And you're right, the hemi was not meant to go in that engine bay! Easily, anyway.
@dickjones6159
@dickjones6159 7 жыл бұрын
So when you grabbed 2nd gear that last time it was forceful enough to pull the coupling the rest of the way off the steering shaft? I didnt know that they index the shaft to the coupling back then. ? I thought they only had to be 180 degrees from each other when you couple the 2 together. Any way well the most important thing is knowbody hurt car repaired and got back home with no damage right.?

My dad was a gear head. He told me a story of a guy he grew up with who had a 55 Ford with a 312cid. in it. They had a Paxton blower on it and they were racing somebody out on Woodward Ave. one night. They were going from 3rd to 4th (old super T10 BW 4spd) The guy missed 4th gear. with no rev limiters like now the motor came unglued. The fly wheel came off and right up through the bellhousing where it continued going in the direction of the top left side of the dash. As it did, it cut the steering column in 2 and kept going where it removed the master cylinder off the fire wall. My dad said by the time they had mentally processed the explosion of the motor and the noise from the fly wheel coming out of the bellhousing it had already left the top of the drives side fender. The windshield was all busted up and the hood hinge was twisted and mangled. By the time all that had set in they had coasted down from about 90mph to 55 or so before his buddy even realized there was no steering or brakes. he said the trans started bucking and jerking and at about 40 just locked up and brought the car to a stop right in the same lane they were in when they started. I asked him, how hard he thinks they turning the motor. he said back then even with good head work and a good isky cam that the guy did have they would maybe make power to 6800 and so he figured it came un glued about 7200 to 7400 maybe. he said it wasnt the rpm but the fact that the fly wheel was probably 27 - 30 lbs he said that is where and why all the destruction came from.

Nice Ride! I used a Weber Street/Strip Clutch in my old 69 Roadrunner and it worked pretty good for only being a 383 with a high riser and Holley electric fuel pump. Comment by mercmarc made me shake my head. I thought it went pretty good considering Mod1032 wasn't powershifting and had Company along for the Ride. As far as I'm concerned, a good driver only hangs full power shifts when he/she is alone not with first timers in the Jumpseat. Kudos to u Mod1032 and your Car!

Mod1032, That is about what I thought. All it take is not tightening the slide bolts in the column clamp enough and getting thrown hard into the seat, everyone hold on tight to the wheel.. There is a FORD part for steering that I am looking to use.It incorporates a cross joint with a collapsible sliding rod. I plan to go to R&P steering and love that the sliding action will keep me alive in case of a front end collision and the wheel can sink into the dash without driving the column through me... Not that i wouldn't be wearing a seat belt or anything!! lol....

@MrNova1969,,, I have owned many, many cars and trucks. The first 3 were all 1970 GM's. Had fun with them and enjoyed each, but the biggest turd of all times that I ever owned was a 1969 NOVA.... It was in great shape, but it was a turd. I'm not here to say it could not have been made a nice car, but it had shit for a ride and the radio wasn't loud enough to cover the road noise. I really want to say something else about people like you. I understand BRAND LOYALTY. But here is a fact for you. ALL BRANDS have their greats and their turds. I didn't stop driving GM just because the Nova was a pile of shit with zero class. It was a grocery getter with just enough power to tow a small boat. I have been driving an 02' F-250 Super Crew for the last 10 years and absolutely love the truck.. Never a breakdown or anything outside of normal maintenance needed. But my all time favorite car is a 65' Coronet 500. I have owned and raced many and own one now. Everything has come a hell of a long ways since the 60's and racers have a hell of a lot to do with that, but to come on here and badmouth someone's car just because you like something else is pretty fucking childish. Brand loyalty is great, but it doesn't make it right for you to act foolish. :(
@MrNova1969
@MrNova1969 8 жыл бұрын
+Steve 1961P. The fact that your Nova was a turd only speaks of your abilities as a "mechanic" and I am sorry that you are one of those insecure "car guys" who has to have a car labeled as a muscle car. Couldn't build your own huh? Mine is black with polished centerlines and a nasty 355. The car has run a best (so far) of 11.28 @ 119. With a 1.51 60 foot. Grocery getter huh? And all you have to brag about is a fucking 2002 ford truck?? lol! Who's the fool? There were 4 door 6 cylinder cars, all the way up to two door big block ss cars. Hey just like the Chevelle! Chevrolet's prime MUSCLE car.

WOW!!! So much class from one person. You are a shining example of why education is so important. Maybe before you spout off you should actually read. I did not post anything to BRAG. (UNLIKE YOU)!! Maybe had you spent a minute to read what I wrote, you wouldn't have made yourself look like an even bigger fool with your last try at a stab for me. Well, maybe it took you much longer than a minute to read it and couldn't get though a few phrases. By the way, with not much more than some home work on the heads and a few aftermarket parts, I broke into the 10's with a street car more than 30 years ago, so I am completely unimpressed with your 11:28 with your "NASTY" 355". Please!!! With what is available today you are boasting about what most of us did without any of today's technology. I honestly don't know why I even bothered to take the extra minute to answer your childish BS. Have a nice life.

bicylindrico I disagree. The plainest mid-sized car on the road was the base Belvedere and that made it the purest platform for the classic original musclecar. You can have your look-at-me factory showboats like Pontiac’s The Judge GTO. Far more appealing to me would be a debadged, no-option gray Belvedere with Hemi, posi, and four-speed. It would blend in with the traffic, unnoticed by all except the true motorheads.
