Left side hemianopsia sufferer here.. So true, constant scanning can make you really tired.

I can agree this is a bigger visual challenge than what anybody would think yes it's very tiring and sometimes strenuous at least on my eyes think of having this condition along with glaucoma and nystagmus which is rapid involuntary eye movement. This video simulates TV however the same challenges can be present when navigating out in the environment same thing walking down the sidewalk constant scanning and turning your head Crossing intersections constant scanning and turning your head. this is where a white cane could be useful for some light navigation and identification when Crossing very congested intersections.for me this condition can be even more challenging since I'm completely blind in my right eye.

The worst part is that the first years, you DON'T undertand that you have that "blank" space, at least in my case, my affected side is the left one, but I have a small segment in the left end, like a vertical line, where I can see, my brain fills in this "gap" automatically For example, if in the left border I see the end of the table, and in the center of my sight I see the middle of the table, my brain will draw that left side of the table that I'm missing, and it will draw it empty, even if there's someone standing over the table

My husband has homonymous hemianopia with right field deficit. He also has short-term memory problems. This was evidently caused by a cerebellum infarction. He cannot read or write. He has difficulty understanding directions, even simple directions. His eye doctor has him trying stick-on prisms to see if this will help create new pathways. It's difficult to understand how prisms will help. He was given a test at his neurologist's office to check his ability to read and do simple problems. It was suspected he has Visual Variant Alzheimer's. I do not believe this is the case, however, I could be wrong. It's pretty unsettling not to really understand what is happening. This video at least helped me understand what he does and does not see. Thank you.

Maybe the prisms that are being tried are used to shift part of the image in one eye to increase the effective visual field, see for example: medicalxpress.com/news/2013-11-peripheral-prism-glasses-hemianopia-patients.html

I also have hemianopia with right visual field cut. It was cause by a brain tumor removal surgery. It has been 6 years and I unfortunately still struggle really bad 😢. I was a very fast reader.. my writing is better but reading is still very slow. I have been looking to see if other people like me struggle. My doctor said it can improve but sadly I think at this point it will remain like this forever.

Thank you for this! Could you make or do you have a demostration of what a patient with bitemporal hemianopia experiences? And just for the sake of learning, maybe what the rare instance of a binasal hemianopia would look like?

Thank you. I have complete left homonymous hemianopia with no macular sparing. One thing your video overlooks about reading is that, at least for me, I have trouble reading individual words, especially if the right half of the word is a word itself. For instance, I will read "social" instead of "antisocial." Numbers are extremely difficult to read since the number of digits is variable. I am not sure if this is the experience of other people, but I especially have trouble with repeated letters or digits; I cannot tell how many repeats there are no matter how long or how hard I look at it.

I have a right hemianopsia but I don't really understand your problem. As you can see on the left, why can't you look at the beginning of each word ? I am trying to imagine if I had to read words backward.. so that my hemianopsia is "in the same sense as you" but I don't miss any word or letters.

I also have homonymous hemianopia, and yes, numbers are a pain. easy to miss the first digits in 64684648798 for example, and really reading it, as we require breaking down numbers into sets of 3, such as 64,684,648,798. One thing that I had incredible difficulty with right when I got it was typing. I couldn't see my typos, and I would often lose my place on the keyboard. Lastly, one issue I personally have is video games. Several are simply unplayable now due to my vision loss.

Capybara Madness I have left hemianopia from a stroke 3 years ago. How did you get it. And a side note I had a male Boxer dog I called my little capybara

@@cheeverdog I had a brain hemorrhage due to having an extra artery in my brain. Probably I was born with it, but it is so rare that they haven't had enough cases to know. My whole right visual cortex was wiped out. I also have a bit of left neglect, which doesn't make things easier. It's been five years last month. I've settled in with it, but all of the problems remain. I now use a white cane when I go out. It gives me confidence so that I don't keep looking to the left to see if it has suddenly morphed into something I don't remember, or if people have appeared over there. The cane also warns people that I might not see them. That is a huge thing for me. I do still run into people, but not very often. I used to work in microprocessor development where reading long strings of numbers, sometimes in binary, was required. This was impossible. I would also have to read tables and waveforms representing signal changes over time. Scanning like that can make me feel sick, as can looking at anything complex. I use an Amazon kindle to read because I can adjust the line length and spacing. I never read printed material anymore. I have a pet capybara. You can read she her videos on my channel. Or my blog is Capybara Madness. I'd give the URL but KZbin doesn't allow that.

@@caplincapybara Its hard to try an explain to people exactly how we see. They keep saying your eye is bad but its not. I used to have a male boxer dog that I called me little Capybara. How random is that? God bless you and remember we are fortunate to not be wheelchair bound or vegetables all together. Keep going forward and live everyday like it could be your last. With us it's a real possibility so we have to enjoy whatever God gives us.
