Thank you, finally after 25 years, someone knows what it actually is. I was told it was a classic migraine and that my concerns of it being similar to a stroke was unwarranted. Jeebus

Thank you! I have only just found a doc who has given me abortive meds after having hemiplegic migraines for the last eight years. The neuro I was seeing said I didn’t have them often enough. While I empathize with those that have them more than once a month like me, once a month an enough! The new doc is a DO specializing in pain and migraines and helped me get Nurtec approved for my regular migraines (visual aura). For my hemiplegic he prescribed a compounded ketamine nasal spray. I have only used it twice but this last time was a very unpleasant “trip” on top of an already brutal hemiplegic migraine. When I first started having them and we’d go to the ER, they would give me Ativan, I’d go to sleep and wake up with a rotten headache by my symptoms went away quickly and effectively. I am inclined to try that route instead of the k spray. What are your thoughts? Thank you again for the information. My 21 year old niece gets them too so I feel grateful that you’re helping us both.

We rarely if ever use the ketamine spray, would need to be a very last resort type of option. Mostly for the reasons mentioned in terms of side effects. The goal of any abortive plan is to restore and maintain function. So we’d typically keep trying other options and save something like that as a last resort rescue option.

I have hemiplegic migraine and i spent all of my adolescence learning how serious i have to be about building a life around this disability. Although the biggest struggle is getting to the doctors/insurance BS and managing all of my missed days and getting behind on finances(also attributable to my young age lol), I have been able to build a relatively normal life. It takes a lot if grief, missing out, dissapointing or worrying others, trying and failing medications, but i can keep a roof over my head, take care of my partner when shes not feeling well, I can drive most days and manage shopping and cooking for my home 7-8 days out of ten. I am employed in the IDD/ASD support world and often wish i had my own supports with things like chores and managing appointments when im feeling like shit 😢❤

And Ive done well with Medical Marijuana to reduce NSAID usage and rebound headaches, and Ubrelvy worked wonders (and usually puts me to sleep!) but it's such a new medication it's really hard to fight insurance for it. I hope in a few years ubrelvy and other -egepant medications will be more well studied and widely available
