Beautiful story, I’m glad I was a part of it 51 years ago... we still ride bikes around the grounds, the memories are still there, if you know what to look for.. the HemisFair Conservancy is doing an outstanding job to help preserve what’s left, and make the old grounds one of the largest downtown parks in the nation... When Johnson was president, my dad was in the Air Force assigned to Randolph, and I can remember one time when he landed in ‘67 and gave a speech... Randolph had a hanger on the West flight line, high fence with concertina wire around it where Hueys were kept for the trip to the Perdenales Ranch... the big 707 stayed at Randolph while the president took a chopper ride to his home... I remember the hanger and fence were there for years after he died..

I was there when I was about 11. San Antonio really was a one-horse town before then. Hemisfair was a cultural shot in the arm, and shouldn't be viewed as a loss because they didn't make any money -- it was an artistic integration of world-wide cultures that advanced San Antonio into a modern city.

Thank you for sharing this. I could only hope that San Antonio could pull off something as marvelous as the fair for the towns 300th anniversary or during my lifetime.

I remember HemisFair, I was real young then but I still remember it today. We lived north of downtown and could watch the tower progress almost daily, and one day while it was still under construction dad took us down to see it, I remember walking on boards in the mud around the base of the tower. I do not remember the modular hotel, but I do remember that sometime in the 70's they built a hospital on McCollugh (sp?) that way.

Seems like my CITY SAN ANTONIO, TX was way better back then than what it is today cuz we don't get the PRESIDENT come here since I've been born and all the othe things ain't here no more like the sky ride it seems like San antonio has gotten unnoticed for years and years.
